My opinion is the soil gets more exposure to air so a bit better gas exchange. Air pruning roots basically signals the root to grow in a different direction. The pruning itself doesn't do anything beneficial IMO.

whether roots circle the pot and stop growing or are “air pruned” lol (should say killed off by dryness) does not matter unless killing them off at the ends is bad for the plant imo.

That's exactly what I keep hearing I'm with you on this one AndyBoi ...
I think you misunderstood my comment. Im not trying to promote either of these options. Im just curious about the results of @quirk ’s experiment.

to my untrained eye they look relatively equal sized plants. And the air pot is slightly larger.

Ok I got u I like them cause they also us less medium so for a 5 gallon bucket only uses 4.5 gallons.. but so far this is my first time using them myself...

What you yielding off those babies ? Got link to ur grow?

I've never documented my grows, just take a few pictures along the way. I've only grown auto flowers and
while my yields are only 6-8 oz. dry, the quality is so much better than when I relied on outside sources.

@AndyBoi, these were Auto Blue Berry Domina, sprouted same day, same mix, same organic fert/nutes, same LST, each under the same individual light.
Only difference - Pot design. Air pot developed faster and fuller and yield was 183g fabric, 226 g air pot.

There's obviously a huge differencedifference in the yield...

those are 2 seed plants. Cant tell difference in anything unless they were the same clone.

the only thing you are proving is that you only want to hear air pots are better for yield.

if they were they would be used in the food industry and be common. Instead almost no one uses them and you only see them being argued about on a weed forum.

if you like them than that is all that matters but dont pretend one post on the internet is proof of anything.

I am with MIMedGrower on this one, but I have never grown with airports or fabric pots either. All my growing is done outside and with the high summer temps we get here(up to 38°C) and our rather vicious South African sun, watering enough is often an issue. I have literally had pots dry to the point that the plant starts wilting in 90min. I just feel that having a pot that dries faster is counterintuitive in these conditions. I may be wrong and I may be missing out on a great thing, but I have always grown in plastic pots and it works for me.

Having said that, if I had an indoor setup where I could control the environment, I would probably test them out... I have seen enough people swear by them to get me a little curious.

Its all about cost vs return. I ran a side by side with cloth pots and my home made "smart" pots....The kinda pots smart people build, i got the coffee sacks for free, you only need 1 pc. of bamboo or rebar and some chicken wire. I re cycled plastic from compost bags for the bottom, made a circle with chicken wire, and then lined the outside with a double layer of burlap sacks. Created a low cost diy air pot/ wicking bed combo and got BETTER performance as a whole from the homemade bags. Also saved a pretty penny, at thirty ones for the generic ones, and you get to create the shape and size that works best for you. Speaking of which, why rounds!?!?!? With squares you can fit more dirt into your space.

I just switched to fabric pots for this next round. My hope is that the fabric pot can be easily washed out and reused so I don’t have to wash my pots by hand which is messy and time consuming when the weathers cold and I can’t do it outdoors. I was a little disappointed in that I need more soil (3 vs 2 gallons) but figured they are cheap to try out and if it doesn’t work as expected I can always switch back. Going in with no reservations and will just observe the differences and report results when this round is done. It’s just starting so we got another 10 weeks before I can report my findings.

I am expecting better more robust roots, because that’s what everyone and the manufacturers say they provide. But we’ll see. I yielded 28 oz the last go round under my commercial quantum 4x4 fixture in a 5x5 tent so we’ll see what this next round produces. If I don’t get at least 28 on this next round then I’m goin back to regular nursery pots cuz a 50% increase in soil volume imo should yield at least 50% more product. Soil is cheap but it’s not free and for production every penny counts.

I thought cloth pots were accurate to gallons because of the straight sides. A plastic nursery pot with tapered sides holds less than labeled.

ie;

3 gallon smart pot is actually 3 gallons. A 3 gallon or #3 plastic nursery pot is closer to 2.4 gallons actual volume?

And you grow in a tent now? What happened to the 2x4 grow racks?

Wow, that’s awesome! Thank you for cunducting and sharing this experiment.
both are beautiful plants, well done! 👽
