Sound kind of like hyenas. Just hoot owls around here.
Out In the woods late at night, if you don’t know what this sound is, it will scare the hell out of ya! They are all around my barn and right now, they are amped up! Number one enemy of the rat. They also make a tapping noise and a sound that sounds like, boing boing boing.
We have barred, barn, hoot and screech owls here. The woods come alive at night!

from fishing alone in the woods for years - there's some wild noises that will mess with your head. I have a funny story on that too...

So I'm in my early 20s and hardcore into night catfishing from river banks (no boat) . I usually drive about 20 minutes out of town so it's rather quiet and this night I decided to stop on the side of a rural highway, climb down to the river and set my stuff up.

full moon, cool night and i start hearing goofy noises and whatever - but the noise that get's me really nervous i hear, it's the sound of grass/ground twigs and sticks being walked on. so of course that makes me do a 180 degree turn immediately.

I'm scanning to see what it could be, usually when out in the woods i will bring my snub for protection so it's all about trying to identify if it's big enough to be scared. after scanning the forest for a little bit (which has a slight incline so anything coming at me is going to have a nice advantage and I'm at the bottom on the rivers edge. I see 2 small reflective eyes.

This is tooo damn close to cat eyes in the forest - i don't want a cougar close enough to have to use my snub and i keep turning back to my gear and back to the glimmer of the eyes in the distance. after realizing they were still and not moving after hearing ground twigs i decided it's time to pack up and get outta dodge

well by now I'm pretty panicked inside, I'm watching my back nonstop and getting a little sweaty but confident i can stop whatever it is in the long run hopefully.

i get all my gear packed up and cautiously make my way to the right of the glimmer and more so towards my car through a rougher area. i am getting closer to both - and i get up to my car and get my stuff in. Now that i am to my car and my gear is in i am feeling much more confident so i take the time to try and slowly inspect what the shit is stalking me
.
...

looks like it was the full moon reflecting off the lettering on a port-a-potty.

let's just say to this day i always do a double take before i get spooked in the woods haha

Fantastic story! I can fully appreciate this story. I went armed up to my barn one night because of a set of glowing eyes and barking dogs. The height it was at, I actually expected a bear or maybe even an elk. Long story short, same exact scenario. Full moon, light reflecting off of lettering of my trash service logo on my trash can.
I was humored and relieved.
The Hubby told me he would greatly appreciate my NOT hunting things at night. More so, when he doesn’t have a clue that I am 😂😂😅😂. I told him quit going to bed so early and then he would know what I’m doing! He watches me now lol lol
Thanks for the laughter! Off to finish round two of my watering.

The screech owls are the ones that got me lol, if you haven’t heard one in awhile it pitch quite as you’re sneaking to your tree stand and one fires off….you’ll jump 🤣

We used to have a nice English garden, 25(?) years ago? Now it’s more of an English graveyard.

Two of the plants I have seeds for are Hollyhocks & Origon Grape.

The OG spreads itself via roots here & there but I’d like to start another bush in the other yard.

The HH I used to spread once in a while but they rarely sprouted or they looked like weeds to my wife. One I protected two years ago I saved seeds but they seem to take years to sprout.

Anyone here grow either?

OG is getting ready to bloom. Small groups of yello buds that smell great. People reach over the fence and break off branches in the past.

Alright im not complaining it was 88 degrees outside today, totally loved it. Im not digging that its now 76 outside, and 93 in my house..... im gonna die. My tent alarms are going off non stop, this is horrible. Need ac sooner than i had planned. Yay

Should be alright a couple days eh? Got up to 95 in my garage and 111 in my greenhouse today. That will all change soon.

Speaking of owls my mom happens to be a 🦉 Whisperer 😂
About 5 years ago she started hearing a lot of hootin and hollarin and she would tell me about it. For weeks she's like "I know somethings out there, I hear them all the time but I don't see anything".
Then one day she calls and is freaking out. There is an owl in her backyard tree about 10 ft up looking down at her and she's like hah I knew it 😂
So for days she is sending pics and ecstatic with joy and then she sees another one in the tree. She spazzes out again and wants to become owl birder, we need an owl box 📦 lol etc etc.
Weeks later the owls disappear and she is devastated. Every day, no owls 🫣 what did I do wrong oh woah is me, this world sucks ho hum 😒
Weeks and weeks go by and she kinda gets over it and then one day she calls and is talking super quiet and I know something is up. She is outside and she is looking up and the owls came back. This time though they brought FIVE babies "Owlets" 😯
Long story short-ish, western screech owls seem to be like salmon. If they choose your backyard as a safe haven to raise owlets, there is strong chance one of the owlets will return to use the same place when is their time. Every year since then she has had owls and then owls with owlets. She has 2 owl boxes but they have never nested, just sometimes hang out in them. Pretty cool though especially because it is just 1 tree in her backyard and they become used to her in the backyard and never fly away when you get close. The facial expressions never get old

Wicked cool! 😆

Love the adventure that night brings with it.

Many Screech Owls calling out at night, in the woods just over the hill from me. In fact, several different Owls are calling out from those woods at any given time. And these Owls are not afraid to perch on our chimney, or in one of our trees.

I will say that a Screech Owls call is terrifying if you don't know what it is...LOL.

Where I live, there are natural wetlands surrounded by woods, and then hills, (makes geographical sense...right) less than a quarter mile from my home, which places it two hills away, with my home sitting atop of one of the tallest hills.

The hills and most of the surrounding 1000s of acres, are abandoned farmland. Three major families farmed the land for generations. But like all good things, this came to an end. Eventually, the land was sold. The road accessible land was purchased by city slickers, looking for a place to build a home. The remainder was purchased by city slickers with money to burn...and the land is preserved for hunting or wildlife preservation of sorts. My neighbor to the South, released Pheasants etc., and own a large parcel, that includes the acreage that borders the wetlands on its West side.

Sitting atop of this hill gives me two advantages, one being the unobstructed view and the ability for sound to travel mostly unhindered. The second being the perfect habitat for all that is wild. Water foul, owls, birds of prey, all migratory birds and of course deer, coyotes, rabbits and much much more.

Years ago my wife and I were up late on a Saturday night (a little after midnight), and decided to go outside and sit on the patio, which was not uncommon over the years. This is when we heard bird calls from three distinct locations coming from the woods. It was concerning, as we didn't know what it was. Call...response...call...response. Each time a new set of repeating calls.

Turns out, it was Mockingbirds. We now have Mockingbird every year since then.

Gotta say...we do love them. They built a nest in our lilacs and it was a very nice nest indeed. They love grape jelly and the other offerings we place on our property for Hummingbirds, Cardinals and Orioles etc.

Morning all yiz!
Beautiful morning in the Ozarks! Spent the day outside yesterday cleaning flowerbeds and soaking up the sunshine. By the time I got through supper, I was whipped. Nothing like fresh air all day to zap ya. At 4 pm yesterday my thermometer on my south porch was reading 90*. Kind of crazy for April. Makes me wonder what kind of a summer we are in for.
@Tremojem we too have mockingbirds. One in particular mimics my telephone ringing! Drives me nuts! I feed the Orioles too. The town grocery saves all of their too ripe oranges for me and we go through quarts of grape jelly. I get the Baltimore and the orchard orioles. They are only here a short time about three weeks and then gone again until next year.
@Zen_Seeker I also have an English garden. Ivy, roses, herbs and moss. I have some hollyhocks but they are scattered randomly. Hollyhocks actually grow wild here in the ditch lines. Predominantly the white ones. I love them they are the heirloom blooms of my Grandmother’s gardens.
Looking forward to this day like all the rest 🥰

@Tremojem I use the oranges for grape jelly after they clean them out 🥰

Okay...

Enough is enough.

You are a clearly a Master at the following:

Marksman

Gardner

Cannibas Grower

Photography

Is there more we don't yet know about?

Just calling out the obvious. And NO, I am not kissing ass here.

The posts speak for themselves.

Great pictures of the sunset.

Damn
I’m a musician and an artist. I have been blessed to use and appreciate all of this. If you look close you will see all of my inspiration comes from beauty. Most nature inspired.
So, breaking it down… I’m a damn old dirt farmer that loves growing cannabis with an infinity for color, that likes to catch a buzz and strum my guitar, owns a great camera, and tromps through the woods and streams a lot and have been blessed through hard work to retire early and enjoy all of this. If I can’t make one see it through writing, then I’ll take a pic or paint it!
We often allow humanity to dictate our talents. I have always been a nonconformist. I wish everyone was, maybe others would realize the sky is the limit if you want something bad enough. My wants are simple, peace and beauty. 🥰
BTW, thanks for such kind words. Makes me smile!
