Would I be able to start clones outdoors in some shade or even under a tarps shade? Anyone done this and succeeded?
If you are cloning a plant that is already hardened up, and you have a somewhat controlled greenhouse to keep them in.
In the open might be pretty difficult with the day and night swings but I’ve personally never tried and am up for the challenge.

I'm generally an outdoor grower. Most of my plants are started indoor or in a greenhouse. Clones cannot be started outdoor because you must look after a few variables (humidity temp light) but once the plants has rooted well and you see a few branches growing bigger then you can easily put them in the ground or pots outside...just as long as the weather supports the plant growth phase: eg don't expect the plant to flower If you put her out in late spring

When I've tried rooting clones outside, they took almost 3 months to root. So, yeah start them inside and then harden them off. Inside, I get roots within 2-5 days. Then 3 or 4 days outside under shade, then they're ready. Way better than the 3 months it took outside in a failed attempt to eliminate the hardening off period.

I had a 90% success rate with a heat mat and a humidity dome, had roots in about 10 days.

Although, I'll be attempting to clone some FPOG F4 from Jaws. It's gonna get tricky because it's a single stock plant with minimal branching. I'll end up cloning the stock, first time trying that. I'll keep you posted.

maybe try some aggressive topping (not fimming) for a few weeks. she should branch nicely. then wait another week or 2 for the new branches to grow out, then choose each new cutting in the same manner that you choose which branch to top-off.

but she will need great environment control if you are going aggressive.

Hello everyone, first of all thanks to everyone here for sharing their knowledge and good vibes 😎 all around the forum very happy to be here.
I’m stating this tread in hopes that you guys will share pictures and details about how you guys clone, propagate .
Meaning details on how you dialed in your set up and problems you had encounter and how you fixed those or got pass them.
Thanks in advanced to anyone sharing their experiences.
Peace ✌️

I know this thread is a few months old but I thought I'd share my "keep it cheap and simple" approach to cloning.

I look for the lowest branches possible that are about 8" long and have at least 3 non-symmetrical nodes. Reason being rooting hormones are more abundant in the bottoms of plants.

Just like most posts say, razor blade on a 45 to expose more area for roots to grow from, scrape the skin on the lower 1/2" of the cut. No rooting gels, no powders, just get them in water quickly. I use plain old tap water (dechlorinated), no pH, no heat mats.
Snip off any large fan leaves, pinch off lower growth tips etc

I put them in a domed tray with all the vents closed under a T8 light, 18" above and set a timer:

12 HRS ON/5.5 HRS OFF/1 HR ON/5.5 HRS OFF.

I change the light schedule to 16/8 once they have enough roots to get into the substrate. 18/6 when they take hold.

Temperatures around 75-77 , no lower than 70 and humidity high 80s.
I lift the dome up to change the air out daily, and change the water every 3 days. That's it.

On average, roots start showing 10 days later...sometimes as many as 21 days. Not the fastest but so what? Point is...it's difficult to measure how little this costs to do and still have success.

Maybe this helps someone on a budget or who struggles with rooting clones. Hasn't failed me yet so I've never bought any of the extra gear.
