Auto's sound a great choice for a quick outdoor grow, and indoors grow in the winter, helps to help the temps, environment constant 24/7.

Disadvantage of auto's
You have to buy seeds for every crop vs free clones.
The lights on 24/0 can cost double the electric vs 12/12.
Every plant from seed is different vs clones, they will give you a room full of the same plants(phototype).
Autos give you no control when they start to flower, so a full room could be a challenge.
The light costs doesn't really factor in for me as my set up is so small and I use LEDs. I have thought about clones but have the same opinion re autos. Think I would get bored of the same weed and the responsibility of keeping a mother plant in constant veg.

I see why they are a good option for larger scale or commercial growers but they have never really caught my attention. I am a hobby grower for the most part and am interested in exploring variety etc But I am thinking I should do this with photoperiod plants due to genetics and my current experience (2 organic indoor grows in soil, all sativa (as it's my poison of choice). I think I am better off sticking to my current formula, whilst improving it and learning more as I move forward.

Thanks for the reply!

I will find out how to post a link to my grow diary and put it up.

Peace ✌️

Autos are on a time clock set by their genetics. Not all are fast finishers but all finish sooner than their photoperiod cousins. 90 days from seed to harvest is common on some of these strains.

I have no idea there ... this is my first run using them. So far I like how they grow. I have no idea how they taste ... yet.

I hadn't considered the factor of being able to prepare the plants properly for flowering. This is absolutely necessary as far as my growing style up until now. Think that I am going to leave the autos until a later date when I can either grow them outside or I am much more experienced in the fundermentals of growing.

Thanks for the advice as always.

Peace ✌️

If you do a small perpetual in dirt, you don't need a mother plant, every plant grown from seed is different, so you could flower 4 plants off and in theory
they would be all different, take 2 cuttings from each.

Auto are a great choice for a small grows but you have less control(you can't control when the plant flowers)
you might want to buy 10 seeds and veg for a week and flower(sog) loads of different plants, 1/2oz off each plant.

Thanks Farm Fam as always for your amazing insights, this community is such a great resource. As a novice grower it is great to be able to reach out to knowledgeable, like minded people.

I am sticking to my photoperiod plants for the foreseeable hahaha

Here's a link to my grow diary if anyone can advise me how to do better on my next grow, fire away

Super lemon haze is one of my all time favourite, loves to be topped and lst, only disadvantage is the flower time, can be 12 weeks

I have to be honest......I've never grown an auto from seed in either a final home nor a large enough container.....usually 3 or 5 gallon is recommended.....the largest container I've used was approximately 2 gallons.......

So to be fair, for me to have never given an auto flowering plant a chance to reach its full potential, they are fun to play with......

I've topped, fimmed, trained, cloned ( yes cloned.....take it from me, don't try it....Huge disappointment)

I guess it's like the debate between feminized seeds and regular seeds.....

We'll save the update on that debate for later........

Autos don't really interest me, I'm sure there's a market for them.

I like making my own seeds so not sure how making my own Autos would go.

How would you select a male and a female would be one of my first questions.

Ruderalis is what I've read. However if you back cross an auto-flower with the photo, you get a fast flowering F-1 hybrid. These fast flowering plants are photo-period plants but they start flowering with slightly longer daylight hours. For example, you're flowering the end of July vs the first or second week of August. Again, only reading ... no first hand experience here.

I have run a lot fast flowering or "early version" type genetics though.
Are theese what they call semi auto seen alot recently
