I’m looking at it as a fun way to talk smack and learn how others growOk so how are they judged? What is the goal? Sorry I'm way out of the loop
We're competing against ourselves and each other. Basically to show others how we do it. No prizes, just fun. I plan to pick three, first or second or third timer growers and offer 'em some seeds but really, no prizes, all for fun & pride/bragging rights.Ok so how are they judged? What is the goal? Sorry I'm way out of the loop
Wait… we don’t judge we just encourage…Ok so how are they judged? What is the goal? Sorry I'm way out of the loop
Grouping up some good options so I can filter easierI might be interested in participating in this little event if it happens. I haven't read through all of the replies in this topic, (and I have limited bandwidth and time to do so) but has anyone outlined the general rules for this contest, yet? Like, what will be considered the "start" of it - from the moment you plant a seed? The moment you snip a clone? Or maybe the moment you plant a germinated seed, or plant a rooted clone into said 1 gallon? Finishing could be defined in several different ways, as well as final judgement, such as overall size of plant, end product weight wet or dry, etc.. These are all things to consider. Maybe even have a side contest for best photo, presentation, etc.
As far as a set "finish date" I think in order to keep things fair it might be best to allow plenty of time for strains to finish properly, so maybe not have a certain date, rather just keep an allotted time for veg. Maybe set a final date out far enough that even 14 week strains can finish, for final entries to be submitted?
And to keep things fair as far as end product weight, maybe allow time for drying and weigh ~62% humidity or so just to keep it consistent.
Just a few thoughts, take it or leave it![]()
How often do you anticipate hand watering? Never played with coco but it’s on my list, I’d run coco in a 5 gallon bucket hand watered but not sure how long that’s go between needing wateringsGot my 1 gallon pots & coco coir

Sarsaparilla my S1's 2023 and Bobby's Widow x Toof Decay cross 2022.
Once upon a time I worked with autos. Glad that's outta my system. They didn't stand up to regulars, at least the regs I grew. I did enjoy the grow so there's that. I'm eady for Monday![]()
Basically I’d like
1: 1 gallon (your medium choice)
2: Photos or auto (no clones this time)
3: Everyone will get the same start date, that will be the seed splash date, once everyone’s seed has popped we will select a date 20-30 days in the future to flip for photos, not sure of the Veg timing for most autos I know some are fast some veg longer, so we’ll have to account for that. Maybe find an somewhat average veg time for autos and select a flip date for the photos based off that but I’d like a short veg quick flip type challenge
4: training and topping is obviously a decision everyone will have to make given the short veg time allotment we will have to plan so folks will have to very carefully select timing for any topping etc before veg time runs out
5: your choice synthetic or organic we can seperatly vote on whatever we’d like afterwards, group the autos together make a poll, group the photos together, make a poll, group the males together etc but we don’t need seperate topics for the grow we can separate it out however we’d like for a vote at the end, and make those decisions as we go during the comp
6: Genetics, your choice as long as it’s seed, fem reg whatever strain you’d like, hell some might even be wanting a male to pop
This was a quick idea lost
Maybe
best grow style (time management)
Heaviest weight
Best overall appearance
If we’d like to break it down we can have an organic / synthetic vote separate
Same for photos and autos
Photo organic
Photo synthetic
Auto organic
Auto synthetic
But I think that’ll separate folks too much, not enough in each category, so I’d say we just break it down to autos / photos, your choice of neuts synthetic or organic
Awesome thanks for putting all this together.OFFICIAL TIMELINE FOR THE 2024 ONE GALLON CHALLENGE!
Start date 8/5
Germ timeline: 8/5 - 8/12 (7 days)
Seedling timeline 8/12-8/26 (14 days)
Veg timeline 8/26 - 9/30 (36 days)
This timeline leaves 92 days from end of veg / start of flower, to new years. Most plants should finish within this timeline. There will be no exact finish date, when all entrants have finished flower the contest will end, we will determine an adequate dry time (most likely 2 weeks) then we will vote on weight and manicured bud appearance last. For the other categories voting can begin when the last plant finishes.
May have a best appearance vote at end of veg as well (best plant shape / most efficient training method etc)
The dates above are final, all entrants must follow the timeline, I will split the final members list into 2 or 3 groups (not dependent on strain or auto / photo I will use a random generator to determine groups) you will be placed in group 1 or group 2,
Mondays and Thursdays will be photo submission date for group 1
Tuesdays and Fridays will be photo submission days for group 2
A designated topic will be created tomorrow for ALL entrants to show their seed / strain a medium / explain your grow and your goals, In one post each, after the initial posts no further comments will be allowed in the photo submission topic all posts besides the photo submissions will be deleted.
An additional category for males will be made if we have any come up during the competition!
This current topic will continue as the chat topic for the contest.
