Update time for my first grow and I'm happy to report that she is still with us!
I have been trying to pretty much leave her be and just feed and water her. The big change was the move to the new slightly bigger and taller 39"x39"x72" tent and along with that move came exposure to the new light. She is now under the Mars
FC-3000 EVO and it is set to about 35% power. I cannot believe how much brighter this thing is than my TS-1000.
As of my last update a few weeks ago, she stopped with the single finger leaves and she was back growing three fingered leaves. As of today I am happy to report that the new growth is now 5 fingered! I was really close to just giving up and starting over but I figured that if nothing else, I could learn a lot from just seeing this grow through. I just hope that I don't screw up and actually earn an opportunity for a harvest and end up with something usable!
The thing that is confusing me is the crazy growth structure of this plant. I did defoliate 3 times over the past two weeks, and one of them was pretty hard, but the leaves were so thick and just laying on each other. As of the past few days, the growth seems to be focusing on "up" now.
Now, this is the first plant that I've ever had and the structure is not like anything I can find online. I topped the plant one time (probably shouldn't have, but I was worried about height) but I think that the "re-veg" is growing tons of stems/stalks/branches. I think that I should probably prune away a lot of it, but every time I look at it to try to figure out what to cut I just get overwhelmed.
The branches that are shooting up new growth now are all over the place. I think these are what I can refer to as "tops"? If that is the case, there are like 30 of them! I am guessing that its probably not a good thing because there are too many?
The other thing that I wanted to document is my feeding/watering over the past 2 weeks. On average, I am watering her 2x per week. This week she was watered on Wednesday and I was going to water on Friday morning, but I waited until Saturday morning. I could not believe how light the 5 gal fabric pot felt. Saturday morning I noticed that when I gave her the gallon of water/nutrients that I did not get very much run-off at all. Much less than normal anyway.
Because she was spitting out so much new growth, I decided to experiment a little and I have added nutrients and
Cal-Mag to the past three waterings in a row. I am using the FF trio, so because I have been "vegging" for so long with this plant, I have just been repeating the "Week 4" of veg schedule per FF and adding 1 tsp of
Cal-Mag, 1.5 tsp of Big Bloom and 1 tsp of Grow Big. So this is obviously 1/2 strength. The PPM of my RO water is coming in between 4 and 12 ppm and with the nutrients and
cal-mag added it is in the low 400's.
I am not seeing any signs of nutrient burn or anything, but I will probably just water with RO water only the next time, unless you all think I should keep pushing the nutrients?
So my questions would be...
#1. If I should keep feeding with every water, or would it be better to alternate, but increase the dosage to more than 1/2 strength?
#2. Any suggestion on pruning this crazy thing??? Each freaking branch makes 8 more branches, which then want to make more branches. Is there an "optimal" number of tops to shoot for? I am guessing that too many without a root structure to support them would just kill the overall quality and yield. Or is it as simple as just feeding more and/or more often to let it do it's thing?
#3. Should I up-pot it to a 10 gallon fabric pot before flowering? I only have the one plant, so in theory, I could...
Thank you for reading and if you have any suggestions for my questions, or anything else that I can learn.... I am listening! I really appreciate the knowledge and support from total strangers, all working toward a common goal!
Smoke.
Now for a couple of pictures....
Just vegging out, waiting for "normal growth to return. This was after some fairly aggressive bending down of the lower branches, that is why she is looking a little sad.
Here she is in her new home, under the new light. I also took the "clone" from when I topped her. I literally just stuck it into some
happy frog in a solo cup. It stayed green and I would water when I thought it needed it. It was pretty well rooted, so I transplanted into a 1gal fabric pot after a month and after I saw new growth. When I posted this pic, it reminded me that I need to cover the light on the power strip with some electrical tape.
Here I tried to show the "frame" of this crazy girl. I may just rename her "Medusa"!
Here is a side profile, out of the tent - so more "normal" lighting. Are the areas of new growth that are finally point up what will become "tops"?
Here is a close up of one of the new branches
And......FINALLY!!!! Some little baby leaves that have 5 fingers!!!
