So, I'll try to keep this short, but I found a high end garden store with many expert level growers to chat with. I was explaining to them that I struggle with yellowing mid to late flower and was looking for well draining soil to help remove salt buildup... They asked what I feed and when I told them Dynagrow, they gave me a "your a clown look".... I guess I'm Bozo,
Here is where the conversation went... (It was very obvious that they know there stuff !)... This is NOT bro science from them, just grow science from long time growers..
1. According to them all liquid nutrients are a HUGE no no. They went into great detail about salts, ions, etc... In fact, the store was huge, not a single bottled nutrient to be sold. They swear that dry nutrients or organic is the only way to go. Period ! They sell jacks, but recommended against this too... Whoa, my mind is blown. I'm not agreeing with them, but I am listening... More on this later..
2. They explained that there are better ways, using slow release nutrients. They insisted that this is the way to go and there is NO risk of salts building up this way... In fact, they went into great detail explaining how there are NO salts in the nutrient tablets they sell... I didn't get it, it was way over my head, but the bottom line is that the nutrients they recommend go into the soil once, that's it... Just water for the life of the plant. (Yes, this is mind blowing and against everything I've learned.)
3. They sold me a bag of these big nutrient pellets for 7 dollars (enough for around 20 grows)... I'll have to look at the bag to get the name of this weird and new (to me) nutrient option...
4. As I was leaving many of the customers over heard me and RAVED about the pellets I just bought... WOW>...
5. NEVER USE PERLITE !!!! Another mind blowing recommendation. They gave me many other options to consider..
6. Compost your soil----let it cook in the sun...Not optional at all according to them.
7. They insisted on using lime. Not dolomite lime (I mentioned this and they went into great detail all about dolomite lime being bad)...According to them lime is a must---
8. NO EPSOM Salt, another huge mistake according to them. Wow?
9. No cal mag ! A huge NO NO !!!!
Anyway, my next grow will NOT use liquid nutrients. Frankly, I'm sick of them anyway, I feel like I'm chasing my tail.. I'll be composting my own soil with Fox Farm Happy Frog/Fox Farm Light Warrior (just bought a bag) and NO perlite this grow.. I'll mix the soil and add a little rabbit manure and let it cook for a few months before use...
Anyway, my next grow will be in a completely different direction to experiment and try something new. Compost Soil, Add to pot, add a big nutrient pellet, and just water all the way to the end. We will see what happens...
