Hi all!
So I harvested my plants (first time grower) and they dried for two weeks at 60/60. One plant had a lot of larf and popcorn, but only a few seeds. I got 2.9 oz of usable bud and 5.4 oz of trim with a lot of popcorn buds in it. All of this was for a friend, so I guess that's good enough.
My plant, an indica, is a different story. I chopped off all the very top prime buds, trimmed, and jarred them. They looked good, seemed fine, and smelled fantastic. 1.9 oz, which would last me at least a year since I'm a light user. When I started processing all the buds lower down the plant, I've run into a lot of seeds. I knew many mistakes were made in the flowering stage, but I wasn't expecting this. Regardless, a lot of really good lessons learned. There's at least two ounces of these lower, seedy buds.
In the meantime though, I was just going to process all this lower stuff as trim to make edibles and tinctures from, but my question is this: Will the seeds ruin this as well? When I go to decarb this stuff, am I going to have a popcorn machine in my oven? I was thinking of decarbing it in a turkey bag anyway. Or should I just chuck it all out, use what I have, and start again?
(I am really new to weed and have only ever used what I got at the dispensary. I've never come across a seed in my weed, but I understand they are really a nuisance. Not sure what to do here.)
Thanks!

Hermaphroditism in modern genetics, usually feminized that breeds hermaphroditism in during the feminization process, often shows up in the lower and middle part of the plant midflower. Pollen falls downward at first, pollinating the lower part of the plant. With fans the problem could spread to seed the entire plant and any others around it. Depends on how many male reproductive parts it produced. One or two clusters with pollen stacks can do exactly what you described. Seeded buds can take an extra long time to dry, I guess because of the seeds holding moisture in somehow. The seed production has shifted the energy away from producing cannabinoids, terpenes, and such to energy directed towards making seeds. So the end product is less desirable, and not close to real medical quality. There is still some active compounds inside, just weaker than they would have been without seed production.

Pick the seeds out manually. Use tweezers or dental pick tool. It's going to take some hours, but that's the best way to salvage it. Removing the seeds is easier when it dries out for 2 weeks or so. If possible put it in some sort of dark box with a constant low power air flow, like a usb fan on the lowest setting for in and out air exchange. It will help it dry faster. As the stem turns from green to yellow to brown the drying process is working. Mold needs light and moisture, so speeding up the drying is good and dark is good. When the stems and branches make a snap or crunch when you bent them in half, it's time to slow down the drying process and move into curing.

The seeds have omega 3 fatty acids, so good for eating. Nice salad topping. They are likely all semi-hermie females not worth growing because of the risk of the same thing happening again. That sucks that this was your first experience, it all came down to those choices of seeds way back when you got them. If you send me a PM, I can point you to a reliable source of higher quality seeds without the hermaphroditism trait. Consider it a lesson learned. And congratulations that you can take a plant to harvest. That's a big achievement. Don't lose heart. You just fell for the first dirty trick. But you don't have to repeat it. Hope to hear from you soon.

when i get lot of seeds i just carefully pregrind my weed by hand to carefully remove any seed that could crush with my grinder and taste bad, the weed still taste good and is potent enough to my taste.

i would just remove the seed as well before proceeding to decarb.

bud with seeds is still dank, it does lose some potency, but the biggest tip is what herb said, to break apart carefully for seeds.
I personally hand break the bug off the stem and then grind anyways. It makes a difference in how smooth the smoke in my bong ✌️

Only time I've had or seen seeds explode is when exposed to open flame. Decarb isn't hot enough nor raises the temperature rapidly enough to cause the steam buildup inside a seed to pop like corn.

Funny how often people are having surprise seeds pop up in these quality hermaphroditized genetics. So much that a tips section needs to be dedicated dealing with it. The new norm.

is your pollination method a little out of control ( too much ) or is pollination out of your control? (Surprise) Kind of an odd problem.

Heh? Never thought I would read that...

I got my feminized seeds from RQS, which my brief research showed to be somewhat trustworthy. To be fair though, I made a lot of mistakes and really stressed my plants out a lot in the last month. I had been watching for signs of herming but I guessed I missed them. After what I put the plants through, it doesn’t surprise me at all that I have seeds. I hope it wasn’t bad genetics because I am just getting ready to plant some more feminized seeds from Royal Queen Seeds.

This is what I was really curious about. If they don’t pop open, and I’m careful not to food process or grind them, I’m hoping I can just make butter and tincture with them in the mix and just filter them out with all the rest of plant material, in which case they really shouldn’t affect the end result? Am I wishful thinking?

I think that is the ticket! Go for it! And don’t feel bad! The strain hasn’t been invented that an indoor grower can’t herm! You’ve got a lot of good company!πŸ˜πŸ‘ and jump right back into the saddle!

Thanks! I got more good bud than I’ll be able to smoke for a long time, so I’m not crushed. I’ll be planting again tomorrow hopefully.
And while I have you since you seem familiar with forum etiquette, I posted another question dealing with the pollen from these plants in my tent. Should that question have been with this one, or was I right to post it separately?

I’m honestly so new to weed that I doubt I’ll be able to discern between not close to medicinal quality and dank, but now that I know there’s a continuum to judge by, I’ll be more critical of my first produce. I’m thinking that the weed I got from the dispensary probably wasn’t nearly as amber as I let mine go, so I’m really interested in the effects of this indica. I’m hoping for couch-lock and then nighty-night.

I don’t think it’s a big deal! But I think it’s better to start one thread and stick with it! Instead of a starting a thread every other day! Congrats on your harvest! There’s enough people around here without a life, like me, that will follow your thread and try and help you out!✌️🍻

Yea as long as it's not packed to the point where there isn't any flower left.I have pics buried somewhere, but there is super frosty seeded bud pics on here. It can still be dank you just lose flower weight for seeds which sucks ✌️

Thanks everybody. All done trimming and jarring. All total:
Trim from both plants: 6.8 ounces
Good bud from Larry OG: 2.7 ounces
Untrimmed buds with some seeds from Grape Ape: 5.4 ounces
Lower stalk buds without seeds from Grape Ape: .5 ounces
But most importantβ€”primo top bud from Grape Ape, no seeds: 2.2 ounces
I didn’t nail the grow, made some big mistakes, but I grew way more than I need and I think it’ll be some good smoke. I’m happy enough. Looking forward to lighting it up after a couple week cure.
Also, I’m much more heavily fortified going into this next grow.

You aren't the first person to use RQS artificially feminized seeds and get hermaphroditism. It's part of the feminization process to breed it in. But go ahead, and repeat the same scenario and expect different results.

Other options were available.

One of my all-time favorite sayings from one of my all-time favorite people! I should adhere to it more!πŸ˜πŸ’
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." ~ Jane Fulton, by Rita Mae Brown. Often attributed wrongly to Albert Einstein.

Marijuana without seeds is often called sensimilla. For reference, see figure 1.
