I wonder what happened to IBM SSA discs?

They thought they were competing with scuzzy and then fiber channel. They created a division for them. They were on all their mini computers. There were In their disk arrays. But then the competition crushed them. It wasn't appropriate for the Unix systems. They had to go back to the drawing board.

They said fuck this shit and spun off another company of engineers to try to find whatever they could mix. SCSI plugged into a fiber channel array discs but no one knew they were SSA discs under the covers. Great little twisted pair connections. Which they then melded into whatever the fiber channel of the moment was. We had the copper and we had the fiber.

Those Gadzooks switches were awesome. I just loved saying the name.

I had one of the first filtering switches that existed. We called it the packet mangler. That thing was 10 times faster than anything else but man occasionally it would just fuck those packets up.

Which is different from the multifunction card machine which basically fed a stack of cards into the mainframe. We called that the mother fucking card mangler.

I was researching once and I had to compare various customer service packages where the salesman would sit at their desk and point and click and figure out who to sell to next. It had to be integrated with the predictive telephone dialer so no one had too much idle time. I had to organize various database companies to supply the customer lists and all the merge purges and then feed them into the system that all the sales people accessed.

Publishers at Ziff Davis are very protective of their lists. They do not want to share.

Occasionally I had to have Papa Ziff make a phone call.

That took about 3 months of research and going around the country and visiting vendors and trying to figure out the best cost performance versus the usability.

When I decided on one versus the other, I made the mistake of telling the vendor that I did not choose that I did not choose them. They said they were going to go scorched Earth on me

I was a child. That was around 23 making these decisions. I had no experience. I had no education. I simply had spent a few years at that company writing some Unix and Oracle code.

But then that was dropped in my lap.

So that vendor said they had contacts throughout the industry and they would just destroy me. I didn't stand a chance against those old men

Fuck you. The spreadsheet's mine. I get to weight the decision variables however I want. I get to decide.

I get to decide where to spend that 300k in 1985. Which is around a million today I think based on inflation.

So the date came for the decision and I went to the boss.

He was an evil bastard. If you've ever seen Glenn Gary Glenn Ross. He is the guy in charge of the telephone boiler room. There's nothing more evil than this guy. He ripped a sales guy an asshole and said go enjoy your root canal because when you come back I'm going to cause you 10 times more pain.

That was the first time I met him when I was assigned to work for him. Every time I met with him I had to travel 2 hours by train.

So after 3 months of work and research and travel and meetings I had my presentation ready with my spreadsheet with my numbers and everything down to the exact reason of why I made this decision.

I was expecting about an hour meeting.

How much THC can I get from how much cubic foot? And I don't care if the percentages on the plant material is 5%. The volume will make up for it. I think it'll be in the 15 to 20s and be just a regular plant. But even

How the real world works

There was a company that revolutionized barcode scanning in supermarkets. Up until that point they simply did not exist.

They did it for inventory. When people took inventory the whole fucking store would close down for an hour or a day when they ran through and figured out what got stolen that week.

How much money did they lose when they were closed or forcing people to work overtime in the middle of the night?

Wouldn't it be nice if a computer could track it for you?

Here Mr. Supermarket executive, check out this wonderful magic box. It looks like a big brick. It feels like a big brick covered in plastic. Because that's exactly what it was. It's got all kinds of buttons on it and pretty blinking lights. It's got connections to plug other things into it.

It connects to a tiny CP/M box with dual floppies. That connects to a tape drive.

You roll this combination of equipment with a big extension cord down the aisle and you scan stuff quickly.

That box was the first box I ever coded on.

CP/M and then Turbodos which was multi-user CP/M with terminals.

I then had to transmit my code to the chip burner and then burn the chip in the box. That took a while.

The language was a bastardization of forth. Stack-based early on in my brain. I did not like it. On the other hand, it's the smallest tightest thing that existed unless we wanted to go to assembler. And nobody fucking wants to code in it assembler unless you're Mel.

Go look up Royal Maccabee typewriter company and the story of Mel. Mel is the ultimate programmer.

All that connects to the brand new scanner that was just invented.

The box in between is the key. That's the one that reads the scanner and saves the data.

That box didn't exist. That box was a scam.

So they sold a shitload of those boxes to a shitload of supermarkets and when they showed up nothing worked.

But at that point the supermarkets paid for the r&d to finish the box.

So that company worked fast and furious to finish the box and when the supermarkets complained they said oh we're sorry you got a bad one.

Please send that box back and we will send a box that works.

They had a company bonfire to burn all the boxes that showed back.

Very major fucking company right now.

Okay, it was a bit too dry this time. It was definitely crisping in areas I didn't want it to. Some of the brown was really dry and breaking off, not just new growth.
