It doesn't make sense to me that grow lights advertise pulling more and more power. They should pull LESS power for more efficiency like everything else.
dont they? you have to look at μmol/J
μmol/J is a unit of measurement that represents micro-moles of a substance per joule of energy. It's commonly used in fields such as biochemistry and pharmacology to describe concentration or activity levels of molecules in relation to energy.
  • μmol (micromole) is a unit that indicates the number of particles (usually atoms or molecules) and is equal to 10−6 moles.
  • J (joule) is a unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI).
This ratio can indicate how much of a substance is being used or produced per unit of energy in various biological or chemical processes. If you have a specific context in mind for μmol/J, please let me know!

μmol/J in Practical Application

  • Lamp Efficiency: If a lamp emits light energy and you measure the PPF at a certain distance, μmol/J helps determine how efficiently that lamp converts electrical energy into light that plants can use for photosynthesis.
  • Example: Let's say a specific LED lamp has a PPF of 2,000 μmol/s and consumes 100 J of electrical energy each second. The efficiency would be 100J/s2000μmol/s=20μmol/J.

This means that for every joule of energy the lamp uses, it produces 20 micromoles of photons that can contribute to photosynthesis.

Comparing Lamp Efficiency

If you switch from a lamp with 2.7 µmol/J efficiency to one with 3.0 µmol/J, you'll effectively gain additional light output similar to that of one of the 200W lamps you mentioned earlier.
Here's a breakdown:
  1. Assuming a 300W Lamp:
    • At 2.7 µmol/J, the PPF is roughly 810 µmol/s.
    • At 3.0 µmol/J, the PPF is about 900 µmol/s.
  2. Difference in PPF:
    • The increase is 90 µmol/s.
  3. Equivalent Effect:
    • A lamp producing 90 µmol/s is roughly equivalent to the output of a 200W lamp (like the VIPARSPECTRA P600 or a similar fixture) given its efficacy.

Summary

So, by upgrading to a 3.0 µmol/J lamp, you not only enjoy improved efficiency but effectively gain benefits similar to adding another 200W lamp, enhancing your overall plant growth potential significantly!

Maybe @PlumberSoCal2 stayed up to catch those scroundrels who stole his plants!!!
Or....... Too many coffees with oil 🤣
Sounds good.

The farm can ban "politics" all it wants but it seems some folks still try really hard to make it known where they stand.
I am actually on a news tolerance break. I can not watch right now as I am out of give a fucks and a lot of news late has been bad and not something I can change so tapped out for a while.

It got so bad I started to watch reruns of TWD to remind me there are better times ahead.....

This is something that resonates with me. Energy efficiency isn't a political statement, it's how the fuck can I do what I need to do (whatever it may be) and spend as little money as required to do it. Refrigerating your food. Hearing the house. Running the pool pump. And... growing your weed.

I don't know if it's a physics law and if there's an electrical engineer out there who can explain it better then please chime in, but there is a diminishing return of energy when it is increased. A good example is an electric motor with variable speed capability. If it draws 300 watts to run at 1/4 horsepower, taking it to 600 watts doesn't het you 1/2 horsepower, it gives you less. Triple it and it falls even shorter reaching 3/4 hp. Same holds true for LED lights. They are going to run more efficiently running at a lower power setting, so if you want efficient lighting then buy more lights and run them low instead of cranking up the power on what you have.

Not a whole lot left for efficiency.
Leds are 70-90 % efficient with grow lights being at the top end.
I think the next generation will have the ability to change power on whole sections of the light to allow a grower to set up a " virtual canopy " with a well balanced level light energy on the whole top of the grow.

Lens throwing tech is one that raises my eyebrow. You need high power to throw the energy further from the source, but through lensing, the lower energy can be focused a further distance a way and then be thrown there as if it was high power. So with a mix of lenses in the light array they can set specific energy levels to be thrown different distances for all kinds of custom tweaking.

It's really, really cool but still not as cool as it sounds. Because if you are filling a larger energy pocket you you need more energy. But you can fill a larger energy pocket with lower energy more uniformly, if that makes sense. The lights themselves will do what we use Mylar to only haphazardly do... more uniformity tent wide.

When a circuit is energized everything in that circuit becomes an electromagnet. Magnetism is one of those hates a vacuum situations where it will always look for a different charge to balance. When it does not find anything it just becomes a stable magnetic field.
This can be very useful as anybody who ever used an old fashioned inductive clamp on a timing light or read signals using a DSO.
This magnetic field and the electrons themselves push against the current flow. The higher the current the more the pushback.
But like anything there are ways to cheat.
Lots of metals behave differently in extreme cold. Recently a carbon/gold amalgamation became a superconductor at -60 c but the current is very limited. Next to nothing for gauss readings.
A wire with no resistance that can be reached with refrigeration instead of a nitrogen bath would be a huge breakthrough.

Camera is up with a red blinking light anouncing its watchful eye. I've got blackberries propagating I'm going to plant along the fence line which will help keep people out😉

I had a brownie before bed and was a bit fuzzy this morning at 1 when we woke up. We're on the same pee schedule🤣

I don't know who out there needs to hear this, but you can have the impaled heads of your enemies on display sitting on the ends of Boganvillia thorns if you plant them. They truly are the "killer wasp" of thorned bushes. NOBODY goes through or over Boganvillias.

I have seen several light manufacturers making lights with and without lenses.
I have not been able to dig up a par map for any of these lensed lights to compare.
I do think the fading edge of the pattern could be fixed with lensing.

my under canopy light has a lens and i think its soo you can have the lamp close the plant its like 4x10W bars with 10 powersettings

So, I get on the computer to do some research on an interesting topic, then like a Ouija board, without my consent, my mouse slides over and clicks on the THCfarmer. Needless to say, my mind is now consumed with all thing weed and has no idea what I was going to look up. Please tell me this happens to other people. LOL

oh its automatic for me after i turn on pc i have 4 tabs open one of them is thcfarmer and i have to go there.often i catch myselfe here and i wanted to do something else

I am currently multitasking.
Posting on a reefer board, exchanging memes by IM and helping a guy diagnose a no start with no tools on chat.

LMAO if you only knew how many times I sit down at the computer to get some actual work done and the first thing I type is "t" and then the browser autofills the rest and brings me here!

And as @amneziaHaze does, I usually have multiple tabs open and THC Farmer is one of them, so if you see that green dot saying I'm online, I may not be.
