Evening, folks. Update time.

Since installing the side lighting and running it for the last 1-1/2 days, I've noticed quite a bit of improvement. The canopy is really starting to take shape, lateral growth is rock solid, my roots are getting insane! (I'll post pics of the roots in an update tomorrow as I'm doing a res change at that point) I've continued to slowly and surely tie down the various branches, and am maintaining an almost perfectly flat canopy at around 5-1/2" above the bucket lid. I'll probably put the 3-1/2" trellis on it later this week and start tucking as I'm already over the bucket edges. It's currently 17"x15.5"x5.5" (left to right x front to back) and I'd like to flip her when it's around 70% full. In the pictures below, you'll probably notice some fan leaves drooping a fair bit. I've been doing some "micro cropping" on them, pinching and rolling the stems a bit to soften them up and tuck them underneath. I'm keeping them on for the next few days as they're not really blocking anything yet, but still acting as solar panels. I'll do a light defoliation later on this week, but for now, there's no impediment to air flow or light access to the growth nodes so I'll not stress her on top of the res change and tie downs all at the same time.

PPFD is up around 625 now at the canopy top and almost 500 throughout the mid and bottom canopy. I'll start slowly raising that a couple of days after the res change. I picked up an IR thermometer and have been checking leaf temperature as well as air temp now. Still using the AI to do the analysis of all my daily data logging, but since adding that extra column of information, it's recalculated the VPD numbers giving me a Leaf VPD target and a specific target on my humidifier VPD control trigger that works perfectly. So it's accounting for the difference for me. I've been doing that for the last 2 days now and honestly, the change in growth over the last 2 days has been staggering to me. It might just be that it's at that stage in its growth cycle, I've never done a hydro grow before. But I can honestly say, I'm not sure I'll ever go back to any other medium for my indoor grows.

Main cola sites are really starting to make themselves known. The colour is looking great over all, and other than a few fan leaves that took a bit of mechanical damage when I was doing tie downs around them, no issues to really speak of that I've seen, anyway. EC has continued a very slow downward drift (0.002-0.008 per day) and my pH has been rock solid stable the entire time. Roots are looking healthy as can be, and I'm quite excited to start this next phase of her training; the scrog net.

Anyway, here's the pictures I took of her immediately after opening the tent for this evening's readings. I also included some of the shots from this morning. You can see how much she's grown over about 13 hours.

Once again, thanks to any and all who dropped by and joined me in my adventure. It's really hitting that exciting point now where all the prior work and preparation is really paying off. Let me know what you think, any issues or problems you see, etc. I welcome it all!

Cheers,

BA.

No issues or problems in this rig. Plants looks fantastic and ready to explode. Im assuming that's a bubbler bucket hydro. I used to grow with a that and the speed is off the chain once dialed in an this definitely is. Nice work

Thanks, gmonster. Yes, it's a bubbler bucket. I actually have 4 air stones running in it, 2- 1"x3" flat round stones and 2- 2"x4" cylindrical stones. They are in diagonal corners from each other to give me maximum aeration. I take one of them out when I do my res changes (about to start one in the next hour, actually) and let it bubble away in the distilled water to really mix the nutrients and give it lots of air. I'll then let it sit for about 2 hours and retest for EC stability, finally I'll pH it to 5.8, wait another hour and retest. If everything is stable, I'll swap them out at that point.

I'm trying to make sure every tiny detail is managed perfectly, since it's my first hydro attempt. My thought is that if I handle every minor detail as it emerges, pay attention to all the intricacies and manage it as a "science experiment" type of mentality, nothing can run away from me (problem wise) and I should have a good grow. I'm quite happy with the results so far! I'll be posting another pic after the res change of the roots as I'm swapping buckets.

Thanks for your input! I do appreciate it.

Cheers,

BA.

First run? Damn your moving right along. Everyone should try hydro at least once. The speed is mind blowing.

The only issue I have with hydro is mobility. Not much of that with a hydro setup. Your pretty much set in place. Years ago I ran scrogs where bubbler. Damn good combination.

I still like a blank medium to play with. Organics are awesome but I try to leave dirty dirt outside for outdoor plants. I run pormix today and a few simple things added. Today I dont even check ppm or ph. I just mix it with tap water n dump. Its amazing how healthy uncomplicated can look..lol

Thanks, gmonster. I'm actually going to be installng the scrog netting this afternoon after the res change. I'm using a 24x48 netting from AC Infinity with 3.5" squares. For now, I'm going to leave it about an inch above the canopy and use it strictly to guide the mains and cola sites over without doing any tucking. I can raise it incrimentally as needed while the rest of the canopy expands. Once I'm ready to actually start the "scrog" part, then I'll be doing the proper tucking and weaving...locking everything into place. I've simply run out of room on my bucket lid to tie down some of the more advanced branches.

Last year I used Promix HP and the Flora Trio nutrients, but it was my first indoor grow and I made quite a few mistakes. Used distilled water, but didn't add any cal/mag at all. Oh well, live and learn. I ended up with around 8 oz of dried bud from the one plant and it was good quality, but certainly not what I was expecting. Spent the summer researching hydroponic set ups and what to watch for, what to do, what NOT to do, etc. before buying almost all new equipment for this grow. I'm really pleased with how it's working out so far, and will continue posting here with bi-weekly results.

BA.

Sounda like your navigating your way through the hobby with some nice results. 8oz plant is a nice haul and often the goal per plant with my floaters. Largest ive pulled was 12oz from a large Cindy99 girl.

I give her the credit for helping me find floater screens.

I'm aiming for a yield of 3 to 4 lbs off this one plant. I should also add I'm aiming to marry a gorgeous billionaire hottie who will take care of all my needs, and I'm aiming to live to roughly 230 years old in perfect physical health! I'm sure a couple of these targets are a little off. 🤣😂

Realistically, I'm hoping with the change in medium, technique and introducing the CaliMagic and Silica Blast into the mix, along with the manifold and scrogging, I'd love to see 16 oz off this plant, but we'll see. To be perfectly honest, I'm just loving the process of growing, regardless of the results. I do track my various parameters three times a day to keep up on any swings in EC, pH, temp, VPD, etc. and make minor adjustments as needed, but without overreacting. Seems to be working so far.

That floater screen method you use is quite fascinating, I have to say! Perhaps I'll look more into it on the next grow come late fall, or even on the outdoor plants I'm planning on running up at my trailer. That will be a totally different experiment, though, as we only go up there from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon each weekend. As I said in an earlier post, if it works, great. If it doesn't, I'm only out the price of a case of beer, no big deal.

BA.

Afternoon, folks. Quick update.

Just finished doing my reservoir change. I wanted an EC of 1.3 and ended up with 1.296 and a pH of 5.85 with a res temperature of 65.4F. I also calibrated the heat sensors on the GGS controller, H05 humidifier and the T3 heater so everything is perfectly dialed in. They were reading a little hot, so problem solved. I think part of it was that the sensors were hanging in the air with no shading. I've put a 3" "umbrella" over them now, so hopefully it'll give me a much more accurate temperature reading. I also installed the scrog netting, but I'm just using it for a soft ceiling for now as I continue directing the branches laterally. I've just run out of room for tie downs on the lid as the canopy is now getting too big for that limited area.

Nutrient mix into 16L of distilled water was:

Silica Blast: 9.9 mL
CaliMagic: 12.3 mL
Flora Micro: 12.3 mL
Flora Gro: 12.3 mL
Flora Bloom: 6.15 mL
Plus:
3% H2O2: 16.9 mL added at the end.

PPFD is sitting around 625 at the canopy but I'll start slowly ramping that up to around 675 PPFD over the next week. VPD is sitting at 1.05 with an air temp of 80.4F and humidity of 70.3%, although the leaf temperature offset is around 3 degrees, so that changes the Leaf VPD to 0.72 kPa, a little on the low side. I've adjusted my trigger on the humidifier to bump it up to try and hit a leaf VPD of 0.93. I'll check on it in a bit and readjust as needed. Other than that, all environmental and reservoir parameters are exactly where I'm wanting them.

Here's a couple of pictures:

You do much better than I .

Have not found a cannabis strain yet they I could push much more than 400 in veg let alone 600 plus.

And your roots, well all I can say is they don’t look fantastic.

I would love to have them like this all the time.

Live with hygroben.

I'd love my roots to look like that, too! How old is the plant at that stage? I know the colouring on mine is due to the Flora Micro and CaliMagic, no rot or anything, but those are certainly whiter and much bushier. I'm a little over 4 weeks since being a seedling.

Cheers,

BA.

Hard for me to give an age. These 4 were mainlined.
I top leaving 2 nodes , then those 2 get topped again for 4 and then this to 8.
I vegged one more week after this , then flipped.

But gives you an idea of size of plant and then the roots.

Colouring is not from staining .
That browning shit is just that. Shit suffocating your plant.

Well, we'll agree to disagree on that. The roots are clean, just stained from the Micro. No mildew, no rot, no smell, no "shit" at all as it's a clean reservoir. Mine is a couple of weeks younger than yours, so I'm hoping my roots are that big by then. I did my second topping about a week ago, but I'm leaning heavily on training it outward. But I'm hoping to be able to flip in a couple of weeks from now as the scrog fills out.

Cheers,

BA.

Well you did ask for tips , I have given a couple really good ones.

I guess I could have use a better word than “shit” . I guess bacteria would have been better .

Can only just speak from my own experiences and help others when I see an issue and just hope they listen and do it.

So you keep up the killer pace and grow some grand flower.

Enjoy .

lol. I did indeed. Sorry if I came off as dismissing, that's not the intention. I've been looking into hygroben. It's part of a 2 part product isn't it? How would it compare with Hydroguard? I'll run the rest of this grow out using the sterile method, just for consistency in tracking my data, but I'm certainly not against switching to beneficial bacteria on my next attempt. Keeping everything the same, I'd then have a direct comparison under identical conditions. Regardless, I do appreciate the input, and I'm certainly here to learn as much as I can from the more experienced growers.

Gonna pull up a chair and watch! 👊
Thanks, Magnum and welcome aboard this carnival ride! I generally update it twice a week, unless I make specific changes or major adjustments and I always try and reply to all that post.

did you really see a drastic change from side light its like 7 watts and its not even close to your plants.
i got the ac infity ones they are 10watts and real close to the lamp i got 20 000 lux enough for a seedling stage. it gave back color to my under-canopy but didn't really do much

I been doing this grow gig for a minute and ive given side lighting a thought...and then like a spliff in the night it went poof! Lol

Light penetration is a tough one indoors. Its the main reason I concentrate all I have available for the plants in the canopy. I also work hard with training them so as they are in the right position to catch the artificial ight.

Ive thought about undercarriage lights but they just dont fit my style of growing and to be honest...not going to produce much. I strip a lot of lard below the canopy.
