One thing my dad taught me to do that most probably don't do is as we inspect the tomato plants any hornworms are taken alive along with plant material for them to eat. After a day or two we let the chickens have the hormworms or the dogs, it just depends, and use the shit (frass) in the soil next year. Last year we got about 3.5 cups total so it's not a lot but why waste it?

That's a great idea. I have bought insect frass before for my living soil but it's kinda expensive for what it is. Homemade frass would be much better. I used to pull dozens of hornworms off my tomatoes every year but a few years ago I put a bluebird house in my raised bed. Bluebirds are insect eaters and love hornworms. I've seen the male bring hornworms back to the nest that look almost as big as he is. 20260627 103241

We have BSF that lay eggs in our rabbit crap so we collect the larvae for the chickens and what they broke down I leave for the earthworms to go through it too.

Love that! I've been wanting to put up some myself.

Melon looking good!

Think I’ve seen maybe 3 hornworms. Was showing my wife the pepper plants one Sunday. In a matter of hrs one ate a whole pepper plant. Was an MMA match killing that fucker.for as big as they are, pretty hard to find, right under your nose.

They do that. Loaded the five up yesterday evening and this morning I have.

So I just gave them more.

Obviously these were infected with wasp larvae and they are coming out. So I put them back and fed the other three to the chickens.
