I can appreciate others having an opinion and ideas, they're on the outside looking in. Besides, I do it myself. I have an opinion on the Israel-Palestinian conflict, the unrest in Egypt, our presence in Afghanistan and Iraq (as well as how much "good" we actually did doing the work of freedom fighting for them). Perhaps it means my opinion, not being "of" those people, doesn't actually mean a thing. But I will still express it and have it and own it and hold it and cuddle it and tell it things late at night (not always nice).

Well then that makes a bit of difference.

While 'looking in' on other people's politics is one thing, I would take an Englishmans 'vision' of the US with grain of salt, as they have NO IDEA what 'freedom' is.

It could be said that an outsiders perspective is extremely relevant. Given the country’s population of 307,006,550, only about 37% of Americans have a passport, and of that number most will not venture beyond Mexico or Canada.

That population of 307,006,550, votes for their leaders, but it should not be forgotten that those leaders play a major role in world affairs, from climate change, to nuclear weapons, to propping up puppet regimes to invading other countries.

So there are MANY people who are not Americans who have more than a passing interest in who becomes president. If they are European then 79% of them will have a passport, many of them having travelled , lived and worked in other countries, which gives a broader world view, a different perspective on different cultures, a different mindset.

Something that may be important when choosing one of the most powerful men in the world... Perhaps not being off those Penelope, offers real insight into the turmoil they create?

While I don't disagree that travel to other countries is important, we all don't live in a country the size of Rhode Island either... When it takes an hour on a train to travel through 3 different countries, you sort of NEED that passport.

I've been to over half a dozen countries (* not including MX or CA (and all but one province)), as well as 47 of the 50 states (some of which are ~nearly~ foreign in their own right).

But again, a foreigners take on the something like the Patriot Act (which Americans should find offensive to say the least), seems like the norm for someone in Israel and they have no idea 'what the big deal is' esp when they have armed checkpoints, etc... Or surveillance/wiretapping of citizens is no issue to some one from England. BUT they have NO IDEA what the constitution is about.

I will agree that our foreign policy is ATROCIOUS, another reason why I like RP for president. Pull our troops back, don't prop up dictator du jour in an unstable country and SHOW the world what is so great about our country, not 'forcing' it upon them.


It is a sad state of affairs when I meet recent immigrants that know FAR more about our country, the constitution, etc. than our very own birth-right citizens, but frankly I don't CARE if those people don't vote. If only 1% of our citizens know anything about the constitution, the framework of this great nation, and they vote, I am satisfied with that. While its apathetic, I think there are some idiots among us. If 99% of the people on the street know the cast of Jersey Shore, but can't name their OWN congressman, then I'm ok with them staying out of the voting booths.

Actually, it's a number far, far below that which votes for our leaders, which votes at all. Thusly the appropriate moniker of United States of Apathy. Last election, if I recall, we were around 50% of registered voters actually participating in the vote. That's just registered voters out of those who are eligible to vote. Back in the year of my birth, 1964, only 63% felt strongly enough to show up at a polling booth and make their marks, which is, to me, a fucking pisspoor excuse for a democracy OR a representative republic, not when people laid down their lives and gave up so much. Not when others still to this day will go to incredible lengths just to make it onto our soil. It's insulting.

Wrong order of priority, in my opinion. However, while our government is indeed incredibly meddlesome, it seems often that there are those who seem to feel that we're obliged to do something about a given problem. And so the world goes round and round.

Interesting, given where I live, that you should choose to quote Mr. Twain. Interesting also that his works are often quite censored in his own country. Things that make you go, "Hhmmmmm...."

Speaking of travel, I need to renew my passport, with my married name. O, the joy of working with the state of Louisiana.

Have to love some of the ignorance in the comments regarding RP's 'opt-out' idea...

Libertarians live in caves? There will be no courts? No police or fire? Infrastructure will crumble? No college grants? All libertarians are rich, white people or dirt poor idiots? When you are old you will wander the muddy streets just looking for a place to die?

For a 10% flat tax across the board, their borders would be respected and they'd never take advantage of a government service...? Kinda sounds like an interesting deal to me. I don't think young folks could take RP up on that, but people like the Montana Freemen? Absolutely.

Then again, if I'm paying into the kitty, I want something out of it. Not just being left alone, I would want more, because being left alone isn't the best ROI.

My being 'left alone' would immediately translate to a 14-18% return(as of today's rates), just based solely on federal income tax reduction. The additional 15% in my pocket would translate in to even more $$ for me in the long run, as I feel I can invest it ~for me~ far better than someone in DC can.

It wasn't that long ago (Kennedy era) where the highest tax rate was 91%!

For every dollar you made, they 'let you' keep $.09. With the rate they are spending err 'investing as they say now', I like the odds that people would WISH they could pay 10% and get 'nothing' in return.

Fuel taxes, property taxes, sales tax, and other direct taxes I can live with, you know, the ones that actually ~pay~ for infrastructure (roads, schools, city/state budgets).

Its amazing what happens to our quality of life (and economy) when we have $$ to spend. There were huge tax cuts from the 1920 - 1929 (like 15% to 0.9% for the majority of Americans).

I know anytime I have 'extra' money, I stimulate the hell out of the local economy...

What are your feelings on abolishing the IRS entirely? I feel there's no need for the IRS and it's become a behemoth entity unto itself, seems to answer to no one.

If we are to have taxes, then the tax code should be simplified. IRS would/should become irrelevant, except for clerks to process.

In 2012, they will be adding 1270 new agents at a salary cost of 473 million.

I'm betting some company would love to bid that contract.

Love RP. Met him at the Capital four years ago. Got a big RP banner in font of my house.... However I do not believe the establishment would ever allow him to become president. Get rid of the IRS get rid of the FED and return to a gold standard of currency-SE

A vote for RP will be a vote for Obama........ and this holds true even more if he runs as an Independent. Just draining votes for the Dem's.
