Looking good my friend. I still have my outdoor going as well and using your method of winging it for sure not really knowing what to expect. Im a couple weeks or so from chopping and looking spectacular. I could see myself moving completely away from indoor in the future. Keep it up Ken.

Looking good Ken..as always. I love outdoor growing (prolly cuz that's all I know) But seriously ya just can't beat natural sunlight. DJ Short has a lot to say about the bebefits of natural sun and MJ.

Congrats to Seamaiden on her Rat Patrol. From the pic, it looks like he got hit in the head (is that blood by his head?), then made a dash for it but the trap caught his tail. If there is one, there are more...keep baiting traps. Squash? whodda thunk?

Thanks Man :)
I thought I read you had stuff outside. Are you in the Mid west??

Yup! That's exactly what happened and I knew we had a crafty one with the first two tripped traps. Dave thought they tripped on their own, but I knew otherwise, gut instinct. I've dealt with rats like this before, but avocado rats, the kind you find in the old, large orchards in SoCal. Those are some big rats, this one wasn't so big. But it was quick. For a while.

Oooo... The Quick and The Dead! I'm imagining a spoof stop-action flick, done with dead rats. Morbid, but funny (in my head) if you think about it.

So, did I tell you about the squash? It's called Marina di Chiogga (which is why I bought it), it's an Italian heirloom winter squash, ugly as sin and completely fucking delicious. Don't bother growing pumpkin for pie, use this squash. Just cut into pieces, lay on a pan lined with foil, then covered in foil with a little water in the bottom and roast/bake for at least 2hrs in a low oven. Let the squash cool until you can handle it, then scoop out as much of that delicious flesh as you can. I got at least 9lbs of excellent quality flesh that's ready for pies, quick breads (what I made first, which reminds me, I've gotta pull that other loaf out of the freezer!), pretty much anything you want where you'd like a rather sweet, rich, creamy-starchy flavor and texture. The bits that get really brown? Oh my God, they're so sweet. Once I tasted it I understood why they were bypassing all these other things we were putting out in the traps, like peanut butter, raw cashews, apples, raisins, and dog food. It was the dog food trap that was finally successful, but barely.

Dave threw the carcass across the street and by the next morning it was gone. I never saw any buzzards, so I don't think that's what it was.

I think I told you guys about the squash already. Fuck. Oh well. I like this squash. Did I include pix? Uploading pix is something my browser doesn't like with relation to the farm. It wants to kill the pages.

Ok Sea; Now I wanna grow some of that squash. will it do ok in the summer heat?

Is this what you are growing?

Squash

Of course I would have to grow it in a 360* cage to keep all the critters away

ooo Genital Wart Squash..yummy

For rats, I set two rat traps side by side. We get some huge ugly barn-rats here. My cat keep them down to a minimum.

rat trap 101:
go to hardware store and get #12 x 1 inch brass crews..phillips head
file threaded end of screws to a point
solder sharpened screws to the outer corners of the trap bail so that when it closes it reminds you of fangs on a rattlesnake
drill 1/4 inch holes where the brass screw fangs hit the wood base of the trap so the screws penetrate the base with out friction
on the opposite end of the wood base... drill another hole to attach #12 awg wire,,,,2 ft long wire
attach at least 2 of these traps by the #12awg wire to a cinder block within a couple inches of each other
bait with chunky peanut butter and insert a peanut into the tube in the bait pan with force so that it can't be licked out
check daily

enjoy your stew :)

Our cat's proving useless, and the traps need to be readdressed as well. But, God damn.... you know, those sound like they might do it. No more sprung traps, but they're wise to the location now, plus the stuff they're raiding is located in another area. The fat cat wanted in the basement bad yesterday afternoon, so I locked him in there with no food, some water and a place to sleep, with everything open so he could roam freely. I don't know if he got anything, but he spent a long time under the floor.

Put the nut under the bait pan? shove the nut under, am I understanding that right? I don't recall seeing a tube, just a flat plate for the bait. I'm not strong enough to set these big traps myself, I need Dave to do that. But I can bait 'em.

Good luck with those rats Sea. Yeah let Dave set em...those thing could hurt ya.

Very nice work i know how hard it is to kill plants man ive even grown out hermies due to not being able to kill the plants......stay up and this spring is coming quick;)

I'm jealous! If you have extra dough you may to invest in some metal screening with 1/4 inch squares and tack them around your opening to keep critters out. 2 foot high fencing would prolly do.

its alsmost 100$ a roll at home depot and its not a long roll. mosquito netting on the sides and clear panels on top is the best way to go. in the summer time that GH will become a straight hot box with the plastic on the sides

Thanks Kolah yeah gotta do something...
