Looking good Ken..as always. I love outdoor growing (prolly cuz that's all I know) But seriously ya just can't beat natural sunlight. DJ Short has a lot to say about the bebefits of natural sun and MJ.
Congrats to Seamaiden on her Rat Patrol. From the pic, it looks like he got hit in the head (is that blood by his head?), then made a dash for it but the trap caught his tail. If there is one, there are more...keep baiting traps. Squash? whodda thunk?
Yup! That's exactly what happened and I
knew we had a crafty one with the first two tripped traps. Dave thought they tripped on their own, but I knew otherwise, gut instinct. I've dealt with rats like this before, but avocado rats, the kind you find in the old, large orchards in SoCal.
Those are some big rats, this one wasn't so big. But it was quick. For a while.
Oooo... The Quick and The Dead! I'm imagining a spoof stop-action flick, done with dead rats. Morbid, but funny (in my head) if you think about it.
So, did I tell you about the squash? It's called Marina di Chiogga (which is why I bought it), it's an Italian heirloom winter squash, ugly as sin and completely fucking delicious. Don't bother growing pumpkin for pie, use this squash. Just cut into pieces, lay on a pan lined with foil, then covered in foil with a little water in the bottom and roast/bake for at least 2hrs in a low oven. Let the squash cool until you can handle it, then scoop out as much of that delicious flesh as you can. I got at
least 9lbs of excellent quality flesh that's ready for pies, quick breads (what I made first, which reminds me, I've gotta pull that other loaf out of the freezer!), pretty much anything you want where you'd like a rather sweet, rich, creamy-starchy flavor and texture. The bits that get really brown? Oh my God, they're
so sweet. Once I tasted it I understood why they were bypassing all these other things we were putting out in the traps, like peanut butter, raw cashews, apples, raisins, and dog food. It was the dog food trap that was finally successful, but
barely.
Dave threw the carcass across the street and by the next morning it was gone. I never saw any buzzards, so I don't think that's what it was.
I think I told you guys about the squash already. Fuck. Oh well. I like this squash. Did I include pix? Uploading pix is something my browser doesn't like with relation to the farm. It wants to kill the pages.
