Bob Marley, one of the best known users of cannabis in the United States, has opened a store selling medicinal products derived from what he often referred to as 'the herb' in Jamaica as the legal cannabis retail business gains momentum again.

The Marley Natural Dispensary is a cannabis retailer—technically a licensed medicinal outlet—that has just opened at The Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, the capital. A restaurant unit is about to open at the airport serving Montego Bay on the island. This is the former home and recording studio of the reggae legend, who died in 1981.

The Bob Marley Group of Companies, run by the Marley family, and Docklight Brands, a company focused on cannabinoid products, are partnering on the dispensary. London-based retail specialist The Design Solution and Jamaica-based architect Christopher Whyms-Stone, the founder of Cornerstone Design, developed the design concept.

A Marley affiliate, One Draw Holdings, was established in 2018 by Bob Marley's son Stephen, a musician and eight-time Grammy Award winner. A limited company, Marley Natural Limited, operates Marley Natural cannabis retail stores in Jamaica and distributes Marley Natural cannabis products.

It would be great to see the herb house at the museum open, Stephen Marley commented. As my father and the Rastafarian community have been saying for over 40 years, I am amazed at how far the world has progressed when it comes to attitudes toward cannabis, finally recognizing its many positive qualities. For his legacy, it's right that we do it.”

It is a daily, spiritual ritual for Rastafarians to smoke cannabis, and Bob Marley once said: "You are revealed to yourself when you smoke the herb.".

The new dispensary is the first physical retail space in Jamaica for the Marley Natural portfolio of legal cannabis products, and more will follow shortly. Last year, Canadians began rolling out Docklight. Privateer Holdings is the first private equity firm to invest exclusively in legal cannabis. Docklight was founded by Privateer Holdings.

"We are bringing Bob Marley's belief in the medicinal potential of herbs to consumers worldwide through our anchor brands Marley Natural and Marley CBD, inspired by Bob's spirit, ideals, and deep respect for nature."

The THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) products include flower, pre-rolls, smoking accessories, and edibles, while the CBD (cannabinoid) products include beverages, topicals and confections. Several of these products are currently available in multiple locations in the United States, including California, Oklahoma and other states, according to Docklight.

Brightfield Group, a legal cannabis industry analyst, estimates that the U.S. market will reach close to $32 billion in sales by the end of this year, and $50 billion by 2028.

Marley's love for the natural environment that surrounds his home at 56 Hope Road underpins the aesthetics and ambience of the Marley Natural Dispensary in Kingston. As well as lush green planters and living walls, there are also a variety of natural woods and finishes that have been sourced locally. Even in the urban setting in Jamaica's capital city, the vibe is contemporary and relaxed, in keeping with Marley's lifestyle.

To honor Jamaica's most famous musician, the development includes a smoking lounge with wooden tables and seating, surrounded by colorful vinyl record artwork created by local artisans.
