you can get big yields out of a dwc,but if you are new to growin indoors, you should prob stick to growin in soil until u get it dialed in. organic bud is more flavorful and aromatic than hydro but that is just my opinion

mh is good for veg and hps is good for flowering you wanna get it closer to the light than a foot thou as it will stretch on u and fall over and need support but be careful not to burn it up. Ideally you wanna veg seedlings under t'5s with maybe a blue spectrum bulb in one of the light fixtures but being money is an issue right now that might not be fees-able but being your in a legal state you could prob find supplies cheap on ebay from people who decided growing wasn't for them but also be careful as if you find this is for you and you get deep into it. You will wind up with alot of cheap lights that you won't be using

You went from not knowing light schedules to thinking about DWC that was pretty quick huh ? but seriously if this is something you wanna do. I would save the money and buy all the good equipment as your first harvest will pay you back for you supplies then after that its all gravy.

Composted soil from outside is going to also most likely give you bug issues and its never good to use miracle grow on pot plants as it will continue to give your plants nitro when your late in flower and need to cut the nitro out.... just my 2 cent .....

best of luck

Nominate best post for someone just getting stated! Great read, but I took these items home!, thanks sosc.

For me, I am a new/learning farmer and having from went from micro grow, hydro, to vert to DTW to......is learn to slow down. I have learned more by following a "constant standard" Start learning one strain, one type of growing medium, one type of nute line/organics etc. As I have "understood " or learned what was happening every time I changed up, I was not able to totally see the subtle differences in needs of the plants, and I started with a shit eating grin, a homemade E&F and a full canna hydro line.....salesman was a happy fucker Im sure, wife not so much......

For me right now I am trying to slow myself down, learn good soil management, dial in my environment and really dial in my reading of a few strains only , they will "tell you" what they want. Well and of course ask dumb questions :D, or battle bugs, or insert stupid learning curve error here. I will have setbacks, I will have issues, I will have plant necropsy LOL as long as I can learn from it seems to be the best attitude for me

Happy growing

Thanks again! I really have to grow because I have a high tolerance and buying from dispensaries is too spendy. I'm always running out for a few days. I need a steady supply because I use Cannabis for 13 medical issues. I only get better when I’m on the Cannabis.

I plan to grow in stages and figure harvesting 1 - 2 plants a month will cover my personal usage. If I can learn to scrog successfully then I will only need to harvest 4 plants a year for personal use. I'm definitely going to get the right / new equipment though. I've been researching growing now for about a month, so I do know some things; I just have no experience. I saw a guy on youtube who did a Miracle Grow test and it did really well during veg. I plan on getting some better plant food at the end of the month. I'm also going to stick to soil for this grow and maybe even the next. I know my compost soil is probably going to give me issues; I'm trying to learn about pesticides right now. I really appreciate your help. Sorry for rambling, but I really have no one here to talk to about this.

i read somewhere that putting your plants a lil further away from the light and using more blue spectrum gives the final product a more complex flavor and odor spectrum.i think i read it in the breeders lab on this site

It depends on alot really. What size plants u want by harvest. How fast they grow. How much stretch during early flower. There is no one awnser. From seed IMO a minimum of 6 weeks for my prefrence. That will usually get u a 2.5 to 4 foot plant. From clone usually 4 wks veg for myself. Then if your training topping lsting usually longer. I would say the industry standard as far as seed companys and fertilizer schedules is a 4 wk veg. It really depends in what your goal is and genetic performance.

If your growing from seed, usually you want the plant to mature before flowering, that is it will start showing pre flowers.
And that's 6-8weeks. If your plant is mature when flowering, you will have a bigger and better harvest.
Clones are another thing all together, depending on when taken and how old the mother plant is. it will prolly be old enough already, so as soon as she roots u can flower.

Thank for the answers. You are helping me a lot.
New Question: At what point do I switch from 24/7 lighting to 18/6?

An 18/6 is a good veg time, but a 16/8 influence the plant to be female, also lower temps and humidity.
I took these pics last night, day 4. I wasn't planning to start growing quite yet, but I found this seed in my stash and gave it a try. I don't / wont have a grow room set up for a few weeks still. This plant may not make it all the way, due to financial constraints, and the stink that the rest of the family don't like

. Not to mention I'm using compost dirt from my backyard, and I only have Miracle Grow for feed. If this plant does make it, it will be a miracle :hilarious: . Oh, well. I hope I can get a grow tent set up in time. Planning to get a Gorilla Grow tent.

I only have a 10 yr. old 250 Watt shop light I'm using now. Will this little amount of light stunt growth? I can put it outside when it's not rainy, but this is the Pacific Northwest, and we're just heading into the wet season. Is outside light on an over cast day still better than the 250 Watt?

Any and all comments WELCOME.

Your compost should be just fine, the bugs in it are not bad for your plant, and they will stay in pot.
Thing is you don't want to put just straight compost in you soil, try using it in a tea, (look up teas).

First as always happy to help as when i came here there were alot of and people who were more than happy to help and you can research some of my old post that some would consider noobish but I always had a passion for plants and gardening . I have by far the nicest lawn on the block and take great pride in it. So I knew that failure was not a option but I did have a few bumps in the road but from my first grow 5 gdp plants all grew great except 1 had nutrient lock and at the time I didn't know what it was , just called her my runt plant. bump 1 .

bump 2 found awesome pheno of malawi but did not know about cloning so lost her but what a plant she was the kind you could smell in a joint in my pocket from the other side of the bar .

Your post now - the plant did well in veg with miracle grow because its needs high nitro in veg and miracle grow provides that but you really don't wanna smoke miracle grow in your cured buds . there are cheap organic chemicals out there ex, somoma gold 40$ a gallon (well 99% organic )

So you say your going to get the right equipment but still use soil from outside ...um not being a smart ass here but that seems pretty risky considering you can get say roots organic soil , black gold , etc for 20$ a bag and even cheaper in legal states or lowes has a 15$ back of a good soil (i'll attach a picture for 15$ - on my way for a few bags in a moment. ) so you get the right equipment and put in all the time and effort and electric bill and the bugs take over your grow to the point you need to scrap everything and start over ? not a good idea imho but if you must you can put soil in over for 20 mins at 250 degrees and that will kill bugs. When I started I used soil that a friend had outside and all was fine but i did do it again later on out of laziness and had to take down a test grow - which in this community is a big no - no as if someone gives you beans to test for them you wanna really make them shine or you will get a reputation as a scammer again just my rant and 2 cent to help out....

ok - well keep me updated if you can't justify spending even 1 penny then maybe its not time for you to start growing as a bad first experience could really change your outlook on the growing game but i don't know your situation either way any more question i would be happy to help and this is all just mho there are others much better than I...... for now....lol ...

scour craigslist, I see all kinds of grow stuff daily going cheap. I know its still spending but if you can save some money and get your stuff set up once, then your ready. I watch 1k combo lights go for as low as $65 with a hood and glass. And the 4-600's even cheaper sometimes.

So, My question for today is about seeds. Here's what I think I know.

Male / Regular - produces seed, can pollinate female.
Female / Regular - Will produce seeds. (does it need to be pollinated?)
Feminized - Has a terminator gene - won't produce seeds (Can it be pollinated?)

So, what info am I missing and let's not get on the crossing subject because right now it confuses me :wacky:.

regular seed is comprised of males and females(like they are naturally). your "reg" females dont need to be pollinated unless you want to make more seed.males do not produce seed, they release pollen for the female.feminized seed are seeds that are made from females that were treated with collidial silver, silver thiosulphate, etc and are tricked into making male flowers that in turn pollinate the female calyxes.this produces female seed by eliminating the xy chromosomes and only having the xx chromosomes.females from feminized seeds can be pollinated

Males don't produce seed? :banghead: DUUUHHHHH. That's pretty standard in nature in general. LOL What was I thinking.

Well most warm blooded animals including mammals (I think) have a seed or sperm that passes to the female who holds the egg and is where conception actually happens. I'm rambling and forgot what my point was!

Back to you...

I am a few days ahead of you so we are pretty close on stages. I am going to re pot today I think. Mission. Need to PH perlite and all that jazz.

Your seedling looks very similar to mine except my fist nodes are on the break through and roots are poking out of all holes in the mini pots.

Looing forward to see the difference pal. Environment, nutes, lights, and all the rest. Great opportunity for both of us to learn a few things eh!

Good luck by the way, always remember, what you put in, in effort, will be re paid in kind at the end!

Oh and I put 10 female seeds down and have 10 sprouted girls so far.
