Start of the Spectrum Test ~ UV and Far Red

So the next step is to figure out how to program these and a what height to run them.

Plants:

LR = Purple Kush <--- Small
LF = Purple Kush <---Small
CR = Big Bud
CF = White Widow
RR = Big Bud <---Small
RF = Purple Kush

Other than the White Widow, I'm not too concerned what happens to these plants. It will be interesting to see if the left side of the WW is different from the right side due to the spectrum.

This is the last grow in this tent to prep, the next thing that goes in this tent will be 6 feminized THC Victory. So lets get the setpoints and testing figured out on this grow to give us the best possible chance for the next.

I have a PPFD sensor that picks up Far Red. I'll do some shots of that when I get caught up with everything else. I gotta dig out my Spectrometer and modify it to see UV. That will be interesting too.

Yeah guys I get it. 🤪

you might have missed the posts and video where I did all that on purpose as a test.

please don’t assume this is a normal grow for me. You guys are gonna give me a complex.
I put 3 600w led like 3I. from my tops I over watted a 3x3 and I got fat outdoor cali buds... and a few white tips...

I'm watching you guys talk about topping, mainlining, defoliation etc in another thread. I'd love to hear from the experts how they would approach the tent above that is pre-flower.

Usually my approach is to manhandle the plants into submission. Do I let these ones go as is?

What about UVA times and distance and Far Red times and distance? This can be enough light for the Emerson effect.

For me I only get them in 2 spots under my lights. Weird confluence of photons. And always when my lights are too close. But yes pouring the energy in is great for some genetics. I've pulled out buds larger than my forearm.

I've also closely inspected those white tips under magnification. Really interesting. Like the plant is trying to grow an umbrella of trichomes whose thickness just keeps expanding until you pull the light back. I was trying to see if that sort of energy into the Jack the Ripper buds might trigger some THCV production. Was not successful.

I am far from an expert, but i doubt training is going to have very much to do with cannabinoid production beyond the basic strategy of getting light to the buds. @MIMedGrower has stronger opinions about this than I do.

My interest in far red actually extends far past the emerson effect. It mostly has to do with "i wonder what phytochrome does beyond just helping the plant know when to flower."

Screenshot 20210130 170136

Because far red goes through a canopy better than red, scientists believe the ratio of red to far red is used to determine the amount of shade around. I suspect that shade detection has something to do with branching behavior.

But if you know other plants are around, what do you do about it? That general question is very interesting to me.

So would you say Far Red on all day? Have you done any testing?

I do far red on all day, yes. I have not done any formal testing, however.

I know you will find this infuriating and like you are dealing with a crazy person, but I am actually consciously trying to avoid establishing hard truths when it comes to plants and am instead consciously feeling my way around looking for densities of interest and trying to break those down enough to be useful (my impression of a plant's perspective). It's kind of a spiritual thing tbh.

What I know is that that every plant I have introduced far red to has reacted to the subjective impression of myself and my wife. Banana plants especially. My perception is it increases branching behavior. I have not bothered to set up an adequate test to prove it for practical reasons, but, ya know, I have done several orders of these cheapo bars that add up to as much as I have spent on the rest of the lights in my tent (not all my lights total or all the places they are used, mind, but I am just saying it's not nothing) because I believe in it to that degree. For whatever that is worth.

Another paper of interest to me

Screenshot 2021 01 30 at 52709 PM

Look at that difference between Finland and Indonesia! You think that doesn't matter to plants at all? Idk...... that is SO MUCH MORE FAR RED.

And we know that matters to plants. You see the experiment above with different genes for absorbance. Here is an example of absorbance for oats.

Screenshot 2021 01 30 at 52459 PM

More or less, my suspicion, and it isn't even an hypothesis, is that plants from climates that have A LOT MORE far red than far from the equator climates evolved to count more on that far red being available when it came to stimulating their phytochrome absorbance and whatever chain reaction(s) result from that and so its absence in most grow room spectrums leads to problems getting those plants to express the tropical phenotypes.

But again this is all just a stoner feeling around for densities of shit that seems interesting to him lol this isn't like, science.

I love how your mind works. You should do a TED talk.
I’ll leave them on all day and see what we see. The 2 middle plants should give us some feedback, but it seems like most of the effects are in veg and I may be too late for full effect

You should notice a difference in the behavior during the stretch.

You're a step ahead of me on the far red, so no experience, but as pointed out previously, far red can stimulate shade avoidance resulting in a lot of stretch, so you might need to cut down daily duration to keep height under control. The degree of stretch may be dependent on the ratio of 660 nm and 730 nm so another frequency factor to consider. Also, I'd encourage you to leave just the far red lights on for 5 minutes after lights off to leverage flower initiation.

Ok so I just got smart taking a trip to planet @Milson Time to talk about genetics and the shortest path thru our quest.

The LED flower tent is soon empty. Veg tent pots move to LED tent. Next group of seedings will go into the HID tent once harvested.

These are the landrace bean in my hands:

I also have

arriving in the next 2 days.

Then I have those beautiful (I find mother nature responds better when you speak sweetly to her) THC Victory seeds here in probably 10 days.

So, to my genetics brethren, help me form a plan to best reach our goals.

Some amount of THC Victory (Fem, 10 seeds) will definitely be in there. When they arrive, that's when seeds get wet. I think I should germ 5 and cull at least 1 if 100%. That leaves 2 highlight spots for females only.

Malawi Gold seems to be a crowd favorite. Maybe 5 beans get wet looking for both moms and dads?

I don't have a link, but milson was talking about (I'm paraphrasing) the best hybrid F1 results come from crossing the most possible dissimilar genetics. Which of these landraces should be crossed for best effect? Is that how we pick?

We will then need 6 more confirmed females to flower about a month later, and so on...

I'll donate an upgraded 4 x 4 mom tent to contain pollen. Currently 4 pot hydro fallponics like everything else, but I could pull all that and put them in dirt no problem. Could easily support 4 daddy's 6 would be my legal limit.

Or maybe all this setup is BS and the guys over at Dutch Passion really know what they are doing in which case we are done! Woo Hoo.

Next step: discover SUPER THCV that makes you invisible.

Do you have a method or a plan to preserve a plant if it's found to be high in thcv?

The Balkhi strain would be interesting crossed with one of the African sativas -- Ethiopian or Malawi Gold maybe? As a sister strain of Mazar-i-Sharif, it's said to be both indica and sativa and promises to be quite disparate from the African strains, but still contains higher-than-normal THCV, and could produce some really nice hybrids. FWIW, that would be my advice.

My understanding is the THC Victory is Syrian or that area. I would go with a sativa and pair it to the thcv go see if you can tug that up even more or otherwise prove it. So one of the africans imo.

If the Victory seeds are part of the choice, there's no use producing hybrids of it yet. I'd recommend popping 4x, reverse the standout, and do an S1, as well as an F2 with the the other Victory plants.

Other crosses would be down the road.

An S1..... Why?

What do you think the mechanism is for progress?

Why not. If the standout has been selected to reverse, and the whole plant hasn't been reversed, why not try for the real winner? Sure, the common genes are going to produce some enhanced losers, but homozygosity obviously works the other way, too.
