The second grow was a total bust. See the post "Let's Do It Again!! 2nd Hydro Grow"

On top of having a seed reliability issue (10 seeds and only 1 grew to the size of a golf ball.). Then I simply ran out of time. Vacation cruise was July 19th so everything had to wait until i returned. I have since found a new supply of Auto Train Wreck that i have germinated 2 out of 4 on my first shot. The were placed into water on 1 August, progress has been much, much better.

Does anyone have a photo of a full grown or nearly full grown Auto Train Wreck plant? Curious to see how much / many plants i can put under a 2x4 scrog that i built.

Oh, and another question. At what height should i place the SCROG net? I plan on topping after there are 3 full sets of leaves (will take the fourth, and repeat when those have grown three sets). One plant just started its second set and the other just started the third set. I have about 3ft of growing room before I get too close to the lights.

Never grown an auto but I would not top others may feel differently. It will stunt it for a few days. I keep my scrog net at 10" above the pot.

Thank You. Sounds like a good starting point. My lights actually have 100% coverage, each covers a 2x4 (or greater) growing area @ 4ft (LED 300 & 600 watts). Total height from top of pot to lights is 53 inches, so 10 inches gives me about 3 feet of growing room before the temp of the lights becomes an issue.

Today the girls moved to the grow cabinet. ppm = 425; PH=5.8 Hum. 62%

Time for another update.

I actually thought i lost these during transfer to the grow cabinet. However it seems that the grow gods are with me (this week); I have some damage but the new growth looks healthy (opinions welcome) and i actually have roots coming out of the largest after only 4 days. The 02G/20 is churning along. My current 02 level is 8.2. I just added a larger air pump to the system so i have to be careful that i don't add so much air that I blow out my 02.

Nuts @480 PH 5.8 (BlueLab probe is broken, replacement ordered. testing by hand unit twice a day.)

Time for another update.

The recovery seems to be in full swing. Since i added more air circulation/agitation by purchasing a MUCH larger air supply. I noticed the output from my existing air pump was "lacking" . My first attempt to correct involved replacing air stones; then the pump itself.

After the shock of transplanting (moving RW into cabinet) things look much, much better.

PH=5.8 Water-Temp =64F PPM=470

On the outside chance that my bad fortune would continue, i dropped 8 more beans. 6 popped and are now in RW.

Two of the new beans have sprouted! Waiting to see how many more come up.

Moved the two girls to the larger closet that has a higher nuit count (800+) it appears from the pale color that it has already blown through 450-500 range. The roots are bright white and growing rapidly. Trying to keep the VPD around 1.0

Ideas & Suggestions?

Update Time....

More bean sprouts :party1: 🍻:love1:

It looks like this is going to be a full cabinet. I like it! These Auto-Trainwreck beans seem to be the bomb compared to the last batch of beans i tried this spring (20 beans wasted... won't be using that source again..)

I topped both of the girls last night (have to do autos early, and only once!). You can see the darkened nubbies in the photos below

I have some leaf burn on the smaller/younger plant. I suspect that like the other, this is because of the change in Nuit. levels. Upper leaf color looks good.

All color seems to have returned to both plants after being moved from the 450 PPM cabinet to the 800+ cabinet.

Checking the root details. I see lot of "branching" nubs coming from all of the larger roots. Root color is still very, very white. 02G-40 is running 30 min every four hours. Light is 24x7 (only 300w is running, 600w is off) Nuits are at the bottom end of the full dosage range.

Update Time . . .

Things seem to continue to be going well. The close-up show that the topping was handled just fine; there does not appear to be any additional damage.

The bean sprouts are doing well too. two of them already have a single root coming out of the bottom of the RW. It looks like i may get 5, possibly six plants. A couple more than i had anticipated but i'll manage... The close up of the lower left corner of the germ. RW shows a sprout curled up on itself. Well see if it makes it

Update!

Things got dicey on Friday. Came home and found the rez was leaking badly. When i found it, things must have just failed (luck) as it was a rapid drip, but only about 2 gallons in the spill tray (res holds 45 gal). I quickly moved the plants back to the other cabinet where the nuits were at half strength in anticipation of the new arrivals (Better than nothing). I figured out what parts i needed and got the Amazon bots moving. Delivery was supposed to be Saturday morning, which was fine because it was going to take some time to dry and paint the wooden base before I added the new & improved plumbing connections.

As it turned out my plumbing parts were coming from a metal shop in Midland, Texas; Enough said. Delivery was not made until 2pm today.

I got the rez repairs completed and pumped the 45 gallons of saved water back into the rez and did my total leak check. Checked the PH & other metrics and all were good. I added Life+ root protector which raised my PPM to 880

The sprouts were not affected, except to be moved from one cabinet to the other. I kept on only the T5's.

Now for the bad news. The center growth on both plants looks good (no spots or discoloration) however the larger leaves appear to be TOAST. Seems it did not like the drop in nuits, even if it was only for 2-3 days. I suspect a week of growth and these "leper" leaves will shrink and die off.

Update!

The damage from this past weekends activities is really starting to show (first two photos). Upon further examination, there does not appear to be any permanent damage. The brown tinge to the healthy root systems is because of addition of PlusLife to prevent RR.

Since the damage seemed to be localized to old growth and does not appear on new growth, i decided to trim off the damage and move on (photos 5 &6). Most of the leaves removed would have died off or been trimmed off in a couple of weeks.

The girls were ready for the net pots (photo 7) Then nuits are between 50-65% of my standard growth levels. The other grow stats are all within parameters (as compared to my first successful grow, grow #2 was a bust).

Update:

Things are looking good. Lots of good green growth and lots of healthy roots.
This has been a MUCH better start. I am sure the new source of seeds helps tremendously.

The Girls are healthy no signs of def. No roots through the net cups yet. According to my cheat sheet from the first run, that should happen sometime this weekend. We'll see.

Removes top growth, but does not cut through stem
Creates 2-4 main colas at top of plant, and and LST can be used to create more
New colas created are not evenly spaced
Does not reduce height of plant
Does not stress plant as much as topping, so plants recover more quickly or don’t even notice☺️

Thank You.

Well as it happens...... one of the two older plants was "properly" topped. The other one i noticed that i did not cut the crown evenly or completely; because it appears that instead of the expected two branches I "think" I see three. I will know for sure in a couple of days.

These babies are auto train-wreck so i will probably only get the one shot to top/fimm. I have a scrog rig ready to lower into place when they reach 12 inches.
