Thanks for the replies and positive vibes.

The question by d420dool was:"hey guys im upgradin my setup from 400 to 600 so i was wonderin if any1 had any recomendations thanx."

So my recommendation would be and still is ... stay with 400W and change the setup.
Lets make some calculation. First to know is how to count the result. Do you count in
gr/W? gr/W/day? gr/m2? gr/m2/day?

When you count for cost you should count for sure gr/W/day.
20 days vegging x 18 hours x amount of lights x Watt = .......... W
65 days flowering x 12 hours a day x amount of lights x Watt = .......... W
Add the Watts together and divide it by the days. This is your W/day

Now you have to know your yield in gr. The weight you divide by the
W/day. This will give a 0,0.... gr/W/day.

For example: For a 400W lamp you need 440W to operate. 400W for the
lamp and 40W for the ballast. So count 10% extra to the wattage of the
used bulb to compensate the power consumption by the ballast. I use 10x
400W on 7m2

I don't veg at all so the first calculation:
0 days vegging x 18 hours x 10 lamps x 440W = 0 W
56 days flowering x 12 hours a day x 10 lamps x 440Watt = 2956800 W
2956800 W / 56 days = 52800W/day
The harvest is 4000gr / 52800W/day = 0,0758 gr/W/day in procent (x100)
will give an efficiency of 75,8

Now with vegging and the time a normal strain flowers
20 days vegging x 18 hours x 10 lamps x 440W = 1584000 W
65 days flowering x 12 hours a day x 10 lamps x 440Watt = 3432000 W
1584000 + 342000 = 5016000 W
5016000 W / 85 days = 59012 W/day
The harvest is 4000gr / 59012W/day = 0,0678 gr/W/day in procent (x100)
will give an efficiency of 67,8

The gr/m2 will be the same for both calculations so this is why it doesn't
say much.

4000 W / 7m2 = 571,4 gr/m2 when you add the days then you can compare.

571,4 / 56 days = 10,2 gr/W/m2
571,4 / 85 days = 6,72 gr/W/m2

I didn't count in costs because when you veg you also have to count the extra
nutrients.

So now we can compare every grow to gr/W/m2 and gr/W/day
Do you dare to add your numbers :D

And what does this contribute to the discussion?

Looks I entered the tomato grower section.

Tomato growers contribute alot to the growers world u opposed to anti- oxidants.my quote shows ur social inadequacy tatto Jim might agree. Just cause u have the means to do high density sea of green with no regard to plant limit doesn't mean 400 are superior to 600 might want to include cost of extra reflecters and bulbs and ballests
in ur equation. Do we agree hennepdesk its all for the love of the plant ?

What up farmers! I rock 1 1000w hps per 4x4 table with 3 tables in a 5x20 area. This is a tight space and I want to get the most out of it. I was contemplating a switch to 2 600w gavitas over each table. I have adjust-a-wings that can hold two 600w bulbs. This allows me to get 600 more watts out of this room. I will make sure to keep the hoods as close as possible. I think it will run more effeicintly, cooler and yeild better. We will see....

i have seen grows with 600 w bulbs pulling .75 grams per watt per month. That's over 2 pounds per 600w with a nine week OG. (4x3.5 light footprint open wing reflectors) Most growers with thousand watts will never do that with an OG let alone anything else. Obviously a 1000w will produce more light than a 600 w bulb, put also more heat. 600 watts are not only more efficient in terms of lumens per watt, but the reduced heat signature allows for bulbs to be closer to plants, and the reduced distance from plant to bulb can more than make up for the lumen output of 1000w versus 600w. 600s can definitely be better in some situations, as always this is dependent upon the environment more than anything else.

one thing no one has discussed in depth is the difference in efficiency, (wattage as well as btus of heat) of 600s versus 1000watts. If a grow is limited not by space, but by amps, (especially running ACs in sealed rooms) the decision to use 1000 watt versus 600 watt versus 400 watt changes. Ive seen sealed rooms rooms with exposed bulbs handle 20 to 25 1000 watt bulbs with ten tons of AC (20 was alot better in terms of temp than 25). Ive also seen a single five ton handle 25 600s no problem (prob better than the 1000w rooms). these 25 600s at 240v(2.6 amps x 25= 65amps) plus a single 5 ton spiking at 60 amps at 240 demands in total (65 for lights 60 for AC) 125 amps. The same for a 25 light 1000 watt room is 5amps x 25 (lights)+ 2 x 60 amp (ACs)=245 amps total

even if you reduced down the light footprint for the 600s to 3x4 ur looking at a total canopy of 300 square feet versus the 1000ws with 4x4 spacing at 400 ft square total canopy space. the difference of 100 sq ft of canopy does not at all make up for the difference of 120 amps between 125 total for the 600s versus the 245 for the 1000w.

obviously this discussion changes for ducted lights and unsealed rooms but for sealed rooms, and especially if someone is planning a build in a space limited by amperage not space, whats the best way to go?

fuck... i need to go smoke, i hate math

^^^^You fucking lost me bro LOL ;) I think every grow room is different and some people could do better with 600's because they don't have the cooling cabability or they can put 2 600's in the same hood like WhiteFire mentioned. Now if you have the space and/or cooling for 1k's then they most likely will produce more compared to single bulb 600's. I think 400's are a waste of money unless your running a 2'x2' closet/growbox.

Sorry I didn't answer your question, but I'm not in the mood to crunch numbers right now (drinking some keystone lights) :)

Hey thanks mang there was some good stuff in there! I guess i could start with one 4x4 table with 2-600w's and see where that goes. Im installing a 2 ton mini split. heat really shouldnt play a role also upgrading my sub panel from 50 amps to 100amps. so amps are no worries. Just trying to cram as many watts in here as possible without frying my laidies.

@ Rollon,

You're correct that you have to buy some more gear but no extra ballasts.
When you run a 12/12 setup split over 2 rooms you can use relays to switch
the output of the balllast between 2 lamps. The biggest advantage is you use
only half the current for 12 hours a day. WWF and DevilShare are aware that
more Watts ain't the solution all the time. Reduce heat over more bulbs will
make a smaller heat print. I prefer more 400W's because then you have even
more smaller heat prints then with the same wattage with 600W bulbs.

@ WWF and DevilShare ... thanks
