The only con i see with led is i have to add heat in winter or my flower room will spike with rh...so ive had to add heat .so not running efficiently atm..

LED tends to grow tighter harder buds. I think it is mostly due to the lack of infrared, which of course is heat. But heat in photon form that causes the bud directly to heat up where those photons hit.

Most people say hard buds are a plus. Personally I don't care, but it is a clear difference between the 2.

I guess it can be familiarity, but i'm seeing new growers starting off with HID, and I don't get it. Seems too many pros with LEDs, lower initial cost, efficiency, lower heat, longer life time.
I'm a new grower and didn't once consider using HID. Just curious why new people start with it.

HPS is extremely cheap, easy to use and plants love it. A single 150w lamp @ $70usd can make enough for most smokers to never run dry.

I'm very curious as to why current growers use old-school light tech that is allegedly much more inefficient than LEDs.
Is it purely based on spectrum?

In my part of the world I need the heat my 1000w hps puts out. I have 2 SE3000 leds and there's not enough heat generated by the driver & lights to heat up the space needed to grow.

Last winter I bought a 1250w finned heater and that barely kept it at 76f. I added a 150w heat lamp for the extra few degrees I wanted. Where is the energy savings with leds when you need to add heat 8+ months of the year?

I now have in the heat of the summer my 1000w & the 2 Se3000 running in my flower room and its 83f at 55% with a 35pint dehue in there adding to the heat. If I shut off the HPS it would only be about 72f and that's not warm enough for veg or flower so I'd still need to add something to bring up the temp

I was hoping to be able to shut down my hps and run only the led's....that's not going to happen now.

I had the same problem. My solution was to add a heater and I plugged it into this BN Link temp controler. See, since it's made in China and callibrated in C, there are certain F temps (almost 1/2) it can not ever hit as it increases in .2* increments. If I set the controler to say 73.0* (it may be 73.1, I don't remember. Mine's set.) and have the controler set up correctly, it will toggle between 73.1 (exaust fan on) down to 72.9 (heater on) and back up to 73.1* because it can't hit 73.0. No, it's not perfect, but more effecient than running heat full time and then just cooling it down with the exaust fan. It generally will cycle completely about every 2 minutes, 1 minute heating and 1 minute cooling. That's with my garage at around 60* and keeps the RH in the tent at around 40%-45%. Here in Pueblo CO my garage RH is around 20% in winter.

Yes, I can see where heat from the lights can be beneficial. I feel like a privileged A-hole now, assuming everyone does not need heat. I am on the other end always trying to keep heat down, to the point that a dehumidifier in the tent would raise the temps to toxic levels.

It would be interesting to see an efficiency graph for getting that desired temp with HID vs LED + heater. I would most likely go your route I imagine and use the HPS to raise temps.

What led well provide the same weight as a 1000w HPS in a c02 sealed room? How much will I have to spend, and will it be outdated before it pays itself off.

I can run a 1000w hps for 5 years for 250 bucks in equipment. Bulbs are 20 per and setup is 170 bucks.

I get fox tailing due to environmental issues but id say my blue dream buds couldn't have been any denser. Sure they could have been bigger lol and looked better. But once it broke up into dust almost. Idk how the shit grew so tight.

My thing with alot of trials is how they were done. Like I could say increasing a plants metabolism can also make them denser, via pgr, co2 or even rzt.

If i were in search of tighter buds and on a budget as most new growers are, id have them buy a co2 kit and dehui instead of spending the extra money on a light. Cause from my point of view, a light that can produce alot of high quality is all thats needed for beginners. Like ill upgrade to Leds. . but atm with all the tents im popping its far cheaper to just run hid. Plus my other building doesnt have heat so in the winter that will help, even thought it wasnt enough heat. Pretty hard to heat a 100x33 30ft tall stone building with his lol. .

I lose the grams per kw argument im quite positive lol. . I tried to do my math. . and wow. . its bad. This sour diesel i grew was quite heavy so i dunno. . I know its the biggest plant ive ever grown so far.

Heres some hps hydro porn lol. Im gonna trim that plant perfectly on the stems and get a pic of it outside. I wish i could test for terps cause i know its hitting high in the flavor department.

You said that was vs a 600w hps right? What light is that and how much? Like i said i plan on upgrading. . ill just need 3. . and that was only 750 bucks. I can turn them down to 600w but never do. My environmentals are fucked im sure.

I ran a 4x8 with CO2 and (1) 1000W and (2) 600W HID for several years.

4 - 5 pounds was a good harvest. Really depends on genetics tho.

So 2200W ~ 4.5 pounds maybe average.
LED - 1300W will do the same thing.

It was an HLG 600 v1 with the samsung 561c diodes. 3000k run never more than 80%.

Where I am at running LED I still need to run an AC FWIW. They still get hot when you are pushing high PPFD, it's just an air to bud heat transfer rather than a photon AND air to bud transfer.
