It is less hassle imo and ime, and it can definitely be scaled down to any size required. I used two 5" Pvc tubes with 3 plants each in a 3x4' space, later 4x4', but recently also been playing with a mini setup for seedlings with 5cm / 2" tubes. I normally started in a small dwc box. Had some plants in dwc at the same time and the stems of the ones in NFT were much thicker, already shedding their skin.

I've seen a lot of great results with the Gro-Tanks from nurticulture @NFT uses, seems like one of the few prebuild hydro setups that is worth the money, but, also check out @Canappa's diy gutter-based setups for example.

Based on your descriptions it sounds like it's 'fasciated', which I recommend topping because the fasciated main bud (in this forum sometimes called 'mohawk') is very leafy, it's like slaw on the inside. Fasciation is generally not a good mutation imo.

Great pics again, so lush, especially the one one the left. Your pics always make me miss NFT. Got some in hempy now which get '3-5 ml of nutes per liter' too that come close to my nft plants but is a lot more work and will probably not remain "blemish-free" so long.

Your gear looks killer. I didn't read some of the longer posts so forgive me if you've answered this, but is it the genetics that are causing some foxtailing or is there an environmental reason behind this?

The reason I ask is I only see foxtailing when heat or hydration issues become apparent for extended periods of time. Personally it drives me nuts, creates hollow looking buds. Also, what is the total liquid volume of the individual NFT systems?

Those root mats look cool as hell and root removal can be accomplished in seconds instead of hours like when working with reusable media of any type. I take it there is some wicking action that occurs, pulling water up to the roots exposed to the air. Am I correct in this assumption?

Super healthy looking set up, has gears turning in my head. Thanks for sharing @NFT.

hi mate, thanks for the nice words :)
the fox tailing thing is something i tend to see with particular varieties
i do not often see it with indicas
this plant foxtails at about 5-6 weeks
the structure of the bud formation is calyx that stack on top of each other
this can be seen from the start, but they do not start (exploding outwards) away from the colas until 6 weeks or so

i think there are a number of reasons why plants can foxtail
and it does not have to be a single reason for each plant pheno
with hazes it happens often and is desirable for some people
i do not mind if they foxtail towards the end and if its not too extreme
this pheno makes large calyx that become hard the buds are pretty dense for this type of strain
although it does have some kush in it

i think the system does function as NFT with some wicking action as you say
the root mats can become over 1 inch thick with big plants
the top of the root mat is almost bone dry these roots turn light brown but they do not die,
the roots will sit themselves out of the solution with root tips poking into the air so some of the roots seem to "choose"
to sit in the air anyway

the system is very simple simplicity is something that appeals to me

the basic principle is easy to understand and build and design your own system

keeping the stream shallow and spread out evenly while constantly moving is the key
this causes the solution to be able to absorb good levels of oxygen from the air as the stream
constantly is pumped across the top plate

pumps in the range of 300-700 liter per hour are used
the flow does not need to be fast, just fast enough so that there is constant run off
at the other end of the channel. this will ensure the flow remains shallow. the slope can also be altered
to control the depth of the solution
a 1 inch thick root mat only needs a flow depth of 5mm

peace

the plant on the left will not stop shooting up, but she is looking sexy now
she will be 4ft or more when finished she is like 6inch + taller than the others now
i hope she is a nice smoke as i would like to see her grow topped and bush like
she also has some resin as soon as the buds come which is something i also like

it has 1 branch at the bottom that has the flat stem thing like two stems stuck together into one
that is also flat lol
also it has the bud growing out of the fan leaf
and the two heads at the top, it had extra sets of leafs on one side
those parts grew very leafy, but the rest of the plant seems like its not effected by any problems

i have removed all of the extra leaves i have also removed lots of leaves that would
shade the plant behind it, it has a nice vanilla smell mixed with a smell like superskunk from the late 90s
i do not want to keep it really i do not like any kind of mutant or runt i like them to grow without issue

peace

Chopped the clones down today, root mat below , mothers milk still growing/filling the space she is covering a 4 x 2.5 ft space at just over 3ft high now she has been bent over

i bent the head of the tallest one over as it just did not stop growing it was getting annoying
i have also removed alot of growth from the mutant plant so the one behind it that isn't a mutant can have more light and space

Thanks mate, its a little too early to tell what she will end up like
one of them has a vanilla super skunk smell

the plant on the left of the pictures is interesting i hope its a nice smoke as i would like to see her grow again
topped into more of a bush as she likes to climb high but she produces lots of branches that all sit nicely directly in the light
all of the leaves tend to gather at the bottom of the plant
its surprising the amount of sativa that shows in the little bud leaves for a cross that has little sativa in it
it seems a bit of a soup of og clones some kush and a fair bit of afghan with some skunk#1 (green crack)

the last plant i grew that was something like this was the flav from tga
that plant could not make its mind up either , starts off growing like a kush/afghan
then turns into a crazy sativa/kush hybrid

make sure you have plenty of head height for her
i flowered these at 6-8 inch or so they can easy get to 4ft

@Limonene has grown mothers milk before he could give more info :)

Hey bud. We found 2 main phenos, a tight lemony kushy pheno and a appy pheno that had longer looser buds. I prefered the first, my mate prefer the appy.
Definitely not an in your face strain but all the better for that fact. Very nice and balanced high and taste and does a lot of work towards the end.
I really enjoyed it. But the goji we did on our next run just surpassed it. Would happily have it back in my garden any time.

Way too cool man. Love this root porn for some reason. Maybe because it just looks exotic and nice all organized in its rectangle shape.

Thanks mate , few pics of the root system of the larger mothers milk plant on the left of the pics
she has made a thick mat almost an inch thick in places
most of this mat is sitting in air, the stream is about 5mm deep

Mothers milk about 5 weeks or so to go
The plant on the left has taken over much of the space
i have ruled out keeping the other two as i do not like the way they grow

the smells are building up now from petrol/fuel to a strong herbal smell with hints of cat piss skunk and lemon pine

the best thing about these plants for me anyway is the way the plant on the left has grown with almost perfect
inter node spacing for my situation, it has raised 15 arms directly into the light, without the plant being topped
i have only tied the branches out so they are in space, the plant naturally grows this way

they do not look like they will be huge colas but they do have a nice length to them
i hope the plant on the left is worth smoking so that i can keep its clone and run it again at some point
as i would love to see 3 to 4 clones topped multiple times into a bush then flowered
the possibility of the amount of colas it could produce is making me slightly aroused
