im looking into doing exactly this

but I’m kicking tires over strip based lights or 2-3 small hlg panels.

You can do both! I built my light with 4 4ft led strips(120w per strip) and 2 hlg qb’s in the middle for a total of 720w max and I’m loving the results. The spectrums work perfectly together and the 2 hlg boards cover the middle perfectly while still getting some light to the sides and the led strips take care of everything else
