Found a new purge technique
HTML:
accidentaly that seemed to work quite well. I left a dish of erl on my dash board over night and when I came out in the afternoon the next day the dish seemed to have gone all creamy and tastes much better. That all around heat in the car was a great final purge.

pyrex dish is placed in another dish with hot tap water for 20mins. then on to a hot plate for couple mins on lowest setting to make oil easier to scrape up and gather. once gathered i whip for couple mins. then into the freezer for an hour. last step is to leave the pyrex dish on a heating pad for 2 days or so. scrape and smoke

some people are douches about secrecy with their vac purging methods but the basic idea is that you put the oil into a vacuum chamber of at least -25hg while its in molten state and it literally pulls the butane out of it.. the whole thing puffs up like a giant marshmellow but eventually deflates as the butane escapes. speeds up the purging process exponentially (can do a whole run in about an hour, from packing the extractor to taking dabs versus a couple days). Finding a good vacuum chamber without spending loads of cash is the hard part haha

I just use a thick glass latch down type mason jar that I picked up at Home Hardware, and a 1/8th ceramic drill bit and slow drilled a hole in the lid. Then use it with a automotive type break bleeder hand pump and the suction cup attachment that comes with.

I did wrap the jar in duct tape, just in case, as after all.... you are pulling up to -28-30hg through something that wasn't designed for it, so ya never know what could happen. But its a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to obtain than scientific equipment.

I use the HMK method. Do most of you use buds or trim? I love using buds over trim. So much so that I don't really smoke flowers much. lol How much are you guys/gals chopping up buds to put in the tube? I have used buds whole(popcorn), but I usually put like an 8th at a time in a short wide mouth glass and chop up with my Fiskars till I get the consistency that I like. I have a BBB baster tube that I have yet to try. I use a glass extractor that is a pain in the ass to clean out, due to the shape. Haven't tried the vacuum purge yet but it looks promising. Any comments on this dude putting it in the oven? I also found this site that has vacuum purge units for sale.extractionexperts.com/Products.html If I should be posting this link can a mod edit it out. Thanks, just trying to help:)

Cheers,
Crom

What's up HMK? Hey have you ever done a side by side with a vac purge to see the differences? Figured if anyone has it was you lol. I do have to concur that it is possible to do a run and have it purged in about an hour lol Like lens crafters! Anyway I just wondered if there was a good enough reason to try a vac to purge my errl.

Cheers,
Crom

i dont think it will yield a better result necessarily, but it may make it easier for more people to do it well. i worry that one may start to lose terpenes, and it may be overkill. if one knows how to remove all the flaming bubbles the old school way, vac purging is not needed imo.

are you talking about with a torch from above? idk i've been through your method numerous times (before i got my vac) and it always took at least several hours of purging to get all the tane out. of course i don't have my method as finely tuned i'm sure.. ;)

if i keep it under 100 degrees at all times in the vac and out would there be any more risk of losing terpenes than with the old method? just curious. i'm not sure i exactly understand how the terpenes react to purge methods.

how much are you putting in your pie plate at once? anything under 4-5 grams will purge pretty fast. over 6 grams may take over an hour, but not 2. 1 gram can purge in like ten minutes, but as the oil gets deeper it takes much longer.

all my runs thus far have been 5 grams and under. although i do scrape my product out of my pyrex and into a dish or onto parchment paper after about a 20 minute initial purge (get all the liquid tane out) and a flame purge from above (pop all the bubbles). from there if i don't vac it, i usually end up leaving my product on low heat (70-99F) for 1-2 days, till it looks like its drying up almost. or i throw it in the vac at -400hg and 99F for about 30-40 mins.

I'm thinking its the scraping it out of the pyrex that is adding so much time to my purge. ive ALWAYS scraped my product out pretty much as soon as ive finished with the flame purge, i think stacking it ontop of itself has been whats adding so much time to the purging process.

I wish i could just throw my whole pyrex dish in the vac. love to see what happens haha.

i blast into a pyrex dish at room temp. once im done blasting, the dish goes into a hot water bath until the bubbles start collapsing all gooey like. the dish comes out and gets dried off, then heated from the underside with a heat gun. then 2-3 minutes under a 100w infrared lamp (about 5-6 inches directly above) and then 5-6 cycles of vacuum purging. the first 2 or so pulls are with low vacuum, just until the oil really foams up. i stop the pump and vent the pressure to collapse the oil. by the 4th pull, the oil is ready for deep vacuum, and i let the pump go until the oil fluff collapses like a ruined souffle + 2 minutes, then sit at vac for 2 minutes with the infrared still going. then i vent and raze the bubbles with a small butane pen torch. i then warm the entire top surface with the torch and it goes back under the vac dome. i finish out the purge cycles like this until the oil only spawns itsy bitsy bubbles at heat, and that when i torch-raze them, they don't ignite (which indicates the presence of butane in the bubble). all said, its about 7 cycles to get here, and then i try to let it sit overnight with a lid on it before razering it out of that dish and into a storage dish (which also has an airtight lid). once in the storage dish, i heat it with said torch to melt it back down and then when it cools back out, its smooth and not tacky to the touch (at 70-75 degrees F); and very clean tasting. 0.1g dabs leave you all wobbly-eyed for 20 minutes. in this pic, the oil is 48 hours old in this dish.

I was talking to a scientist cat about this since I prefer vac purging. He was very confident that being able to vac purge at a lower temp prevents a lot of cannabinoid degradation. The only thing is that if you can figure out how to low temp purge (100 degree or less) the oil has higher cannabinoid content but its not active. I don't want to carboxylate trim prior as that changes cannabinoid content as well. We tested a batch that was vac purged low temp vs heated to activate. the sample that was heated was active but with different and lower cannabinoid content. Just something to consider as everyone uses different temps, times, attention, etc. I've tried some fantastic earl without vac but with vac the smell/terpenes are very consistent. never seen a difference in yield tho, agreed.

I have some BHO that a friend gave me. I asked him if he purged it and he got all defensive as if I was implying that he did not create the oil properly. I just want to cook with it.

I was going to purge or heat treat the BHO myself as Madd_hatter described on the first page of this thread. Placing the glass jar in boiling water. Leave the lid on?

Is this a good idea? Another thing I have been reading about here that confuses me is "the blast". What is that? Do I need to do this also?

Please keep in mind that I am completely new at this. I have not created the BHO, nor have I used it before. I have been trying to research this on many forums and appreciate any help from those with experience.

Thank you

Other:

I dont like messing with that much hot water. and i dont like accidental wetness in my oil (sounds bad)

SO ... i use one of those 'rice socks' microwaved for like 5min. for about an hour (depending on amount of oil) reheating the 'sock' every so often.
the rice holds heat pretty well, holds the pyrex stable and most importantly, heats the dish evenly with no mess/risk.
