Yep. Exactly,, although this year all my plants pulled thru.. and I'm looking at an excellent harvest.. did a few testers. And there up to snuff... I think it's transmitted by leafhoppers or thrips.. but just my opinionI too have been battling this purple crap for at least a few years now. It almost seems like something that changes/degrades/mutates the plants genes leading to deformed and discolored leaves/tops. Although the buds normally do mature they are usually small and stunted, with a little bit of everything missing in the end product as far as smell, crystals...i imagine THC is lowered as well although I havent tested the CRAP. I'm killing some plants now that I wanted to bring inside and do some crossing with....be nice if some answers were found, I see others talking here and around the net....but nothing for sure. It's not a temp or water on the plant being burned by the sun thing I can assure you. It's in the leaf pigment it appears, you cant wipe it off.....getting damn tired of it. 40 years of growing only problem was deer and thieves, now this GRRRRrrr..
edit-also i have certain strains that NEVER get it and a few strains that DO get it. I never get it inside when i grow from seed, only plants exposed to outside and then, not all of them
I had this identical issue last year on a ten foot plant I grew in Va. It showed up on 2 limbs right at flowering time. I cut one off and let the other grow. It developed normally but the buds were black, I discarded them. However the rest of the plant was normal. Now it is showing up again this year on the sky walker . Outside plant about 10' tall. Im going to cut out the limb affected and hope it doesn't appear again. Would be interested to know if ANYONE HAS FIGURED OUT WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO ADDRESS IR. It appears exactly as in your photos so I'm not going to post any.Hey growers.. running into problem this year on outdoor soil grow. New growth has black spoting on leaves as they start to sprout out of the top.. but it's not round spots. More like on edges as new growth sprouts out of stem.. had this issue last year too.. tentatively think it's a form of botrytis.. but not sure I'm in Virginia .. very humid in summer... Every year so far also got hit with grey botrytis.. but this is different.. saw thread last year about this. But no one really had a good answer.. I'll post pics

No black tops..so last year I just kept plucking the diseased tops off,,and when they went into flower,,they grew fine...this year has been dry and hot,,central VA,,,,so it's just the luck of the draw I think...although I did change soil I grew in....ditched the ffoxfarm. I did make some RSO a while back..every time I checked on the boiling off process,,I tasted the product,,got so hi that my wife said it looked like I was nodding out on heroin....was hi for like 20 hours..haven't done edibles since..I found and seen that the next step Seems to be learn how to make concentrates! First off anything I say is only guessing, and am not qualified to be relied upon in the area of virus, bacteria, viroid ect.
To me, after looking around a bit, I believe 100% that what you have is witches broom.
Certain Herbicides can indeed cause witches broom.
What you have is most likely caused by some fucking bug. And number of bugs can cause it. Leafhoppers, mites. Any chewing bug.
Could it be the new infestation of Lanternflys spreading across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York ? I am on Long Island and they are all over the place !I too doubt the trace amount of residue left after you washed it out was enough to cause anything.
Virus, Viroids, Bacteria, Fungus, Mold, Insects ect, are going to be downfall of Weed, Hops, and Fruit, and Vegetable crops in the future. Its already happening.
Me and another buddy been growing weed since 1972, and never had anything like the purple shit that attacks the growing tips, and works its way all over the plant, and kills it in most cases.
Starting about 10 years ago it started showing up, when in the previous 40 years we really never had any problems. A bit of mold late in the year. Now every year for 10 or more years we lose up to 90% of the crop to some purple plague. And we are in an illegal state, and have to work our asses off to get anything, and we aint young. Especially him. Hes 74. Still diggin hjoloes, and carrying water.
And YES, weve been attacked again this year. Much of it just now starting. Just before, and during preflowering is when it is most likely to start, though I have seen it in early July, but not very many times. 99% of the time with the strains we work with the shit starts in August.
And it never happens to the same strains grown indoors. You can take a nice healthy clone from an inside mother that never turns purple indoors, and take it outside, and it August, the motherfucker turns purple black, and dies.
