Sounds like a plan. My only change to your system is fabric pots and placing them on top of the potting soil I dumped on the 12 spots I used this year. AND splitting open the bottom of the pots so the tap root can anchor itself.
I dug out half the 'accurs-ed' dirt and dumped used potting soil from my Autos on top. Hoping it'll keep the soil dry enough to discourage the Verticillium wilt that decimated my plants this year.
Drier is better. Plus, if we get alot of rain again I may cover the ground around the pot so it doesn't get saturated.
Actually the plants themselves didn't seem to mind wet feet, but the disease liked it TOO much. And I will also trim and train them more like indoor growers to keep them manageable. (we'll see how that goes

) Like chucky said, I have all winter to ponder my moves for next year.
And I know hubby will be glad when I don't have to climb the seven foot ladder dragging my 3 gallon sprayer up with me. LOL
