Bud Back Building - Real Or Myth?

I'm going to lean on the side of a real thing that works. I will admit, I was hesitant at first but I wanted to try it. Some of my tops started to bleach early into flower before I raised my light. I took this as an opportunity to test this bud back building technique. I applied it somewhere around the very end of week 4, or very early week 5. I don't recall because I didn't log it. However I snipped the very tips of the bleached flower and only a couple non bleached. Now I'm nearing harvest and I have to say, it actually looks like it works. Those flowers actually look larger and more plump. I plan to try this again on my next run to ensure it's not an anomaly. Has anyone else applied this? if so, what were your results? Real or Myth?

Okay - First I want to apologize for the yellow pics. I couldn't hold the lighter for reference, the yellow filter lens, and take the pics. I'm not an octopus. lol.

I'll alternate the pics - (applied, not applied, applied, not applied)

You can see the biggest difference in the tops. Rounded vs. Pointy. Also, which may be harder to see in the pictures, but they have a little more plump as well.

Hard to say. I mean it might just look a little fatter because it’s rounded off more. And it’s possible some of that energy went into making the bud a little fatter. It’s hard to say though.

Nice looking buds tho. Kudos.

I'm still not sure yet. I want to try it again. Also, how does it affect the flower after being dried and cured? Is it fatter, but fluffier? Or does it cure just as dense but larger? I do believe the theory behind it is to slow vertical growth, and encourage horizontal growth. It's claimed to produce fatter, larger colas, with more of a uniformed rounded shape, and increase yields.

While I'm leaning one way, I'm still on the fence. I need to see more. But I am curious now as it seems to me like something definitely happened.

I really need two plants of the same strain, size and structure. That way I can apply it to one plant and not the other. I can track growth and final end product to see some definitive results.

Yeah it’s just hard to get even two clones to grow the same. You kind of need a large pool and A/B testing to really decide if it helps and then some lab testing to see if it affects potency at all either positively or negatively. And even then the results might not be conclusive.

Did the pruning stunt the production for a day or two? Would be my main concern personally.

I saw that once somewhere.it is like topping but you topping the bud,it suppose to make it fatter....I wanted to try but outdoors my buds could get mold if I cut their tops.....But you have to cut them a little bit earlier so they can catch up sideways before they are ready.

Yes,something like that.I found that for example( i had to roll forward his smoking haha).At least it doesn't look so harmful to try on few buds....

I totally get it. I personally have a hard time cutting off anything that's healthy. If it wasn't for some of my tips bleaching, I most likely wouldn't have tried it.

You're not cutting off much though either. It's the very tippy top. Just about the width of the scissor's blade on the tip.

yup, I saw that video too. I must have missed something about week 3. My sometimes unreliable memory was thinking just past the halfway point in flower. Allowing a little more time for recovery makes sense.

I got a mate down here that pinches the tops so i guess hes referring to this..hes all for it and was very pleased how his buds came out..

They got rounder or more plump as u say from simply finishing not by back building which I've never in my years have even heard of. Bro science. However I would say some of the pointy structures u get is strain related or overfeeding. Happy growing

Got me to thinking about cutting the tip of my wiener off to add some girth but I just cant afford to lose any length.

When my mate told me first thing i thought it would b stopping the buds from growing anymore upwards .like topping.i thought.ive never done it and dont intend to.tamper with there growth..if it aint broken why fix it...

I do this whenever I get caterpillar damage and I've yet to see any improvement over other untouched colas on the same plant.
