Good Morning Folks. Rookie here.. So the story goes drying was pretty slow and i started dry harvest the other day..... I saw a branch that had had (BUD ROT) so cut it off and threw away, I trimmed all plants down off MAIN stems for additional air flow and faster dry. (3weeks drying) so far. My question is if i find a big budrot bud (it was big dense) (Easily Identified) after discard is the rest of the plant / plants Done for? I will manually look them all over i just dont want to waste the time trimming the rest of the harvest if its over. But if with a little work I can got through it and salvage whatever etc? what key signs should i look for while trimming up the rest before cure? Will mold still (if on plant) (not Seen ) be detectable in the jars while curing? Thanks so much. Just scared to keep it if it going to make me deathly sick or worse..

PS (Edit) I have been looking around the interweb....Saw that Black light can be used to see mold Wonder if anyone has tried this ...I do have a flash light that has multiple settings like that as well. Any advice and or help appreciated.

I recently encountered bud rot on 1 of my cola.nugs... it was chopped and thrashed... the rest of plant did not get any more bud rot.... another plant got it and after every 3 days I found new spots popping up so it got chopped early to save plant....

Look for buds that are brown... or buds that basically turn to dust and feel all dried out.... if worried about any powdery mildew you can always do a bud wash....

But best way to go about is to actually trim and sort thru good and bad buds

Excellent thanks will be doing it today I dont see powder mildew as i garden so have an idea of that... but when i trim up all my buds now should i even trim down the bigger nugs prior to cure? just so i can see better? additionally it should form as well during cure stage? i have decided to go smaller jars = more jars just in case a jar gets it? Thanks again in advance.

I think UV is a great tool! Especially when inspecting growing plants. Should work OK on drying bud also. Give it a try.
thanks well so far it looks normal? lol TBH i have only bought from disp so well dried and cured I will take some pics and any advice from any one is greatly appreciated Im not sure what im looking for. UV is NOT showing any thing stand OUT but could be the bud is covered with it ...web says basically look for UNuniform colors and patterns and it all looks very uniform assuming its right...lol. My bud smells NPT skunky ? part of drying ISK not hay smell , just different. I will grab a few shots of my stuff.. It is very STICKY if that means anything .

In my experience, UV, causes the dead plant material to fluoresce yellow or close to that. Mold will fluoresce like that also because it kills the plant material. The healthy part of the bud should look kind of red underneath UV light. The UV flashlight I have has 51 LEDs. And put out a pretty strong beam. You should be able to spot moldy areas while trimming without it. But maybe you can verify with it.

Let me know if this looks normal to you lol.... it doesnt smell like bud but the pics and video show basically 99% of the harvest looks like this (dry enough) ? ready to cure? (been about 3 weeks)

It all looks pretty normal to me. And the only way I know of to find out if it is dry enough is to jar it up with a hygrometer and see if the thing stays down in the 60s. If it jumps up to the high 60s or higher then you’ll probably have to dry it out some more before you seal it up. And if you suspect area of bud rot, take the tip of your scissors and route around in it. If it disintegrates and turns to powder, then it probably is rot or mold of some kind. Don’t confuse the shriveled brown pistols with rot. It is something you can spot with experience. That was my biggest worry after my first harvest also. Not knowing how to really tell the rot. my brother in SoCal said he lost 50% of the bud on some of his plants to rot and cat damage! So it happens! You just have to learn to differentiate.

ok thanks.....what i saw (mold) was mold NO question...at first i thought was spider nest thing but was large and knew wasnt right. Pistels ..right, gotchya i know that part .... any advice on smell? strain maybe? doesnt smell of hay (chlorophyl) smells very Pine / Diesel... I know those are common smells or tastes? but never had that smell before.... most of the cana i buy is skunky Does that come later? strain is Bruce Banner or Bruce Banner #3 femanized NOT auto. Sativa. if any of that helps.

Additionally it is ok to dry out more? better dry than wet yes? I still have some hanging in the shed i know it can take longer (temp cooler) i dont have climate control outside so have a fan hoping it will work (3 weeks) dry time so far. now that i cut them down into smaller buds and smaller branches (screen) and hang the branches still.... letting them dry a bit more before i move forward with trim. I dont have the hygrometers :( i have thrown in the boveda pack in each jar to assist.

The smell is pretty much is what it is! It will change some during the curing process. I am a fan of the hygrometers! They’re relatively cheap and although not all that accurate, they get you in the ballpark! They keep you from jarring up bud that is too wet or dry. Without them it is just a guessing game and I don’t like doing that after I’ve come this far. In my opinion if you do a good job of drying it and getting it jarred up in the low 60s you don’t need boveda. But a lot of people swear by them. I don’t use them because I don’t like introducing any foreign material in with my curing bud! Hopefully some other people will chime in with ideas. and yes, I would air on the side of two dry when I jarred! You don’t want to shit molding up after you’ve jarred it. Dry weed may not taste or smell as good but at least it will still get you baked!

Hi 3 wks and not dry yet is quite a long time having them hanging where humidity is variable could be causing issues. What's the humidity like in your area I know its in the high 80s here would never dry would just slowly turn to compost. If the stems aren't snapping like match sticks then not dry enough to jar up yet. Cutting bigger colas into smaller pieces and removing buds from stems can help also but you certainly want to control temp humidity and airflow. From the pics and videos bud looks OK maybe just on the point of going bad I would get it nice and dry now bring it indoors if you can to finish would probably be bone dry by morning after 3 wks outside in the shed.

Even though there is some controversy over them, I'm testing out an O3 generator (Ozone generator) in my grow rooms to see how well they ward off molds and such. Problem is, I don't usually have mold problems, so it's hard to say either way.. I'm hoping to get some fusarium on some clones that I can test it on 🤣

yes bringing inside isnt an option(lol) i placed a small heater in the shed , probably should have used from the start :( so i will heat and air circulate fora day or 2 have none hanging atm so all are cut down and on dry screens fingers crossed....NOTE: i jarred 3 yesterday ... that pine / diesel smell was definately NOT present when i opened 1 jar this morning it had that strong bud smell. (fingers crossed) Question's when burping is it ok to open the jars (for how long roughly?) in the cupboard i have them inside was wondering how long for a burp session minimal air flow in a cupboard ...but will it be fine?

So if it doesn't smell like anything BUT GOOD WEED... take buds out of jar and let sit overnight.... rejarr in a.m. ..... burping i would do in a.m. and p.m. for 1st week... open jar... roll nugs around and leave open for about 10 to 15 min.... after 1st week or 2 can burp 1x a day... after 3 to 4 weeks can burp 1x a week

I would follow what JKash is suggesting for a burping schedule certainly need to get those buds back out the jars after 8-12 hrs, I put mine in a paper bag and loosely fold over the top or in cardboard box depending on volume. Do this for the time it takes for them to firm up again snappy stems etc smell should improve also. You may need to repeat this a couple of times depending on how much moisture is in the buds to start with prior to jarring.
Then move on to burping once a day for a week or so pretty much once a week after that. Keep a careful eye on bigger buds and if in doubt repeat the first step again.

Followed the added a heater to the shed for about 24 hrs (nice ambient temp) nugs are dry and the leaves are touch and they fall off dry haha so all is looking good am going to trim and jar up today hopefully i didnt DRY TO MUCH? (or doesnt matter to much?) Really appreciate all the advice folks this is defenately a great resource for help. I may have salvaged my harvest (lost some BIG Colas :( but still grew alot of product. so NEXT year ima push for and do better based with the info gathered here and apply it. Like my garden I will just get better each year with trial and error and advice and research etc. tips and tricks will always improve my experience and ability to grow effectively. just hope bud isnt to dry for cure?

I had a case of bud rot once. Made 2 changes: never grow big colas again and build a IPM plan. Botrytis likes those big cola's, top 'em and spread them out

If rot turns up on the drying line like this, the rest of the harvest is usually fine if you sort it carefully. Our full bud rot guide covers checking colas before hanging, drying dense buds safely and what to keep or toss.
