There is a growing with Sea Solids thread over at i c m a g that is very interesting. Picture perfect plants grown w/ around 2000ppm of sea solids plus 500 ppm of PBP. It's worth a look. I was even thinking of ordering some Sea-90 as a supplement. I think the idea is that after a millennia of erosion runoff, tides, etc., that the sea floor has a fairly complete profile of the spectrum of elements and minerals available.
Sounds interesting.

How many farmers are growing w/ ro water? Are you guys running Jack's alone, or are you adding epsom salts (or other)? if so, how many ppm should I add for an OG strain?

Oohhh... are we gonna start talking about ORMUS? I just started making my own after reading a bunch of stuff on it. Thanks for letting me know about that thread. Ima go hit that thread up.

If it's a full changeout, I add 1ml/gal of DutchMaster Zone, and 8-10ml of Superthrive.

I had a bit of trouble with low nutrient strength which no doubt will hurt my yields, caught it and am now pushing 1.6 EC at week 5.

When do you add your superthrive? At the beginning, middle or last? I'm running Jack's Hydro Herb along with Jack's super bloom @ 180 grams hydro, 30 grams super and 10 grams cal nitrate. The plants are roaring! This gives a ppm of around 750 (blue lab) in a 50 gal rez and I dont think the plants can take anymore. Green as green can be and getting huge. I'd like to add some superthrive to the mix though.

180 grams in how much water?

I add Superthrive right at the beginning.

Sorry to correct you, but you said it several times and I'm afraid people will listen...

Its actually the opposite.

Think about it like this. If you add the Ca first, then its the most diluted it will ever be in the system. That way when you add a phosphate, etc it has the least chance for lock up. If you add it last, it sits at very high concentrations in the solution for several minutes at the very least.

This is why your going to generally find all the Ca in a two or three part in the first part, the A bottle.

It's important to keep in mind what it will tie up with in solution; if you add the Jacks and epsom salt, then it won't be diluted. I dunno- all I can say is that when I added calcium before other nutes, even diluted, I got lockup. Now, I don't. Call it anecdotal, call it luck, but it's what's working for me consistently and I wouldn't suggest others do the same if I didn't think it was the best route to take.

Are you sure the calcium is in the part A of most ferts? I rather think it's in the clear fluid, which is generally the part B. Sensi, for example...

just got back from the wholesaler and picked up 50lb bags of each of the six pack formula minus the trace elements which i got a 5 lb tub of.

I haven't had the chance but i figure my cost per feeding will be even lower than the jacks.

Gona have to take the time to figure out that calculator so i can hit that 3-1-4-2-1 with the salts.

the jacks bag says add CaNO3 last. it seems to me if the S is diluted in solution first then you add the Ca its the same thing as the other way around.

But then again, you ARE the expert ...

Im sure. In every case the Ca is in "micro" or "A" (actual available):

No shit- since they can't get that right, I figured they weren't paying much attention to what was going IN the damned bottles, either- so I don't use them.

I still swear by Jacks Hydroponic- it's working extremely well for me, and I feel like I know exactly what my girls are eating... and it's wicked cheap by comparison to the liquid nutes.

Desert Squirrel, I don't doubt your encyclopedic knowlege of what's in the nutes, but I went back and re-read the Jacks bag, and they were quite clear; add the Calciun Nitrate after both the Jacks and the epsom salts.

Go with what works, right? Adding calcium last is working for me. When I did it the other way 'round, I had problems- and, it seems others do, too.

I have a hypothesis about why this might be, let me know if you're interested.

If I recall correctly, the phosphorous and calcium are the issues when adding the parts.

Calcium likes to bind up with a lot of stuff. Since I add epsom salts on a regular basis, I suspect in my case it was binding with the sulfur and creating... gypsum. Same stuff as in drywall. Not real water soluble, lol

In any case, the lower the solution strength, the less likely lockup, or flocculation, will occur. So, dilute the nutes even before adding them. This may well be more important than what order one adds them in.

Yesterday I noticed exactly what you are stating about dilution being important. I was adding some multi zen and had terrible floculation that just pushed it to the top in gobs of swirling snot. After a rez change, I diluted the multi zen, bubbled it over night, added it to the rez and not a problem.

Hey ttystikk, ever wonder why the canna boost and other boosters have a green hue? Alfalfa and beeswax seems to rule with this fatty alcohol: Triacontanol --- aka Canna Boost et al

On amazon its $18 a bottle. it sure looks like fun!

If you are real ambitious, here is a ton of fun!

Bet a neat booster could come out of all of this! (if one feels the need to boost!)

Wow just checked ebay and it's all there....CHEAP. Bet one could make a 5 liter bottle for under $50 and have the same as a $500 one.

Yup always what works.

shoot with the hypothesis - id like to hear it.

BTW gypsum is widely used in the ag industry.

shoot with the hypothesis - id like to hear it.

BTW gypsum is widely used in the ag industry.

Gypsum works fine in soil, but because it's 97% insoluble, it's not going to work in RDWC... I don't know enough about soilless and coco to know whether an insoluble nutrient would work there or not.

So, on with the hypothesis:
Basics first- flocculation occurs when the solution strength of a pair of minerals prone to binding rises above a critical point- I don't know the chemistry here, so I can't give exact figures.

Since most people's tapwater has calcium in it as the primary component of their water's hardness, adding more calcium first raises this solution strength, making any flocculation event that much more likely to occur.

When adding calcium last, this potential is mitigated as long as the grower gives the rest of the nutrients time to fully dilute before adding the calcium.

End of hypothesis- and I wouldn't have a clue how to go about validating it. All I can say is that I add my calcium last, well diluted, to my RDWC with the other nutes already in place and well diluted and it's been working very well for me. For what it's worth, I haven't had a nutrient lockup issue since I switched to Jacks, and I definitely did beforehand.

As I said a day or two ago, I think that prediluting nutrients into 5 gallons of water before adding to one's system is an essential step to reducing this likelihood, and in fact may be more important to the prevention of nutrient lockup than the order in which the nutes themselves are added.

I find it interesting that most nutrient manufacturers have the user put their calcium in first in the A part of their two part system. It's only when I started using Jacks that I was able to more fully understand what I was putting in my RDWC, and that's led to quite a rethink about what I'm using, how and why on my part.
