Here is some blueberry shatter from the last round. This batch was extra sweet as no pesticide other than caps bennies were used . I had problems with my grow room temp but all in all this was tasty!!! This is only a sugar leaf run no nugs at all!!

Yep! Good eye! This has to be an earlier model as I have seen two in the last month much more portable, and really the size is my only complaint. It's nice not to be using a torch and the sessions also benefit as less time is needed in between dabs!

I'm doing a run of mob boss here soon and I hope my return is that high.
Dude if the trim is right and the bud is nice then yeah! it was also made with a $9,000 chemistry oven of sorts. But you look like you know a thing or two

Knarley stuff yall!
I have recently taken up bho extraction and winterizing it.Been running left over shake and small nugs from good quality dry lbs.Have not been able to get that light yellow colored beautiful product i see here and there all the time. Its light colored until the scrape, after the scrape its almost always a dark opaque amber shatter consistency.I Winterize 48 hrs then filter in the freezer, then evaporate in Pyrex sitting on a pot full of water at around 110 degrees, then scrape. I am going to purchase a vacuum chamber soon.Do yall think the vacuum will improve the color and consistency? I would be stoked to make some translucent stuff like i an seeing here.I am thinking my prob is either too much heat, lack of a vacuum,or possibly the clearest extractions come from fresh sativas? Stuff i make is strong shit, but sticky messy unless frozen, then it shatters shards all over the place.I read graywolfs sight to learn most of the tech,am i just missing an expensive vac oven or something else?

thanks for the insight,
peace,

edit-im thinking now thin layers on a slick pad in the vac, skip the pyrex..doesn't seem like i can pour much oil on the slick pad without it running off..im high...thanks

Color depends on temp and the bud you use... Get a Infared thermo so you know what temp it is for sure

Take my opinion for what its worth..

1. I would skip winterizing indoor runs.. trim or not its a waste of time and good terps... Unless its outdoor its not gonna have a high % of wax content to begin with.

2. Hot water baths are not consistant in temps and i highly doubt uve been able to maintain 110 evenly..If your water is even steaming your too hot.. Vac setup if you want to make anything close to whats been showing in this thread its a must.. and one that you can heat while vac'ing also.. prefer a stainless steel setup and a griddle my self.. but everyone has there own twist on things...

Vac ovens are over kill unless your running 50-100 grams of pure oil at once.. for a home maker a simple 100$ stainless steel setup will do you just fine.

yes more times then not fresh sativas will give the best LOOKING oils but looks are not everything.. pictures are just that.. cant dab my photos :P

When uve been doing this a few years the novilty will wear off and you wont really give 2 shits what color or texture it came out as long as its clean and taste as good as the nugs it came from you'll be happy :D

I suggest focusing your energy on making a product thats clean and gets you to the level you wanna be and focus less on what color it is.. spent more time on your temps and vac times... Ditch the water butane will absorb that shit and thats not productive for your oil kinda defeats the purpose actually..

Lot of time lot of practice and alot of different strains and you'll get the hang of it pretty quick.. skunkpharm is good too keep up with what they do and you'll be 2 steps ahead of most :D

most importantly don't hurt yer self :D

Do you have a DIY vac oven link you use dabbie? Ive seen more consistent runs with ovens, than pots. Also the tor an oven pulls is scientifically more vacuum. A nice oven will determine opacity and sometimes even a blonder color ive seen. Also to keep a nice even hot water bath with consistent temps why not put it on a lil heat plate to keep an even temp? everyone else is different, but I do think the most gold does come off nice sativas and good chem hybrids. Love this thread I have some porn for yall soon. Would love to see where you made a vac oven that pulls your quality shatter for around a 100$ Im thinking more around 450+ area. let me know. Also The allure only leaves the oil making when either you have waaaaaaay too much trim (which then your using an oven). Or when you always blow the same strains. There is always room for improvement and higher yeild with new equipment. And new oil from new strains is the best.

Thanks Bongobong and Little Dabbie for the advice. Funny you mention the difference in waxs od and id.I ran some a few weeks ago that the guy swore was indoor colo, but during the first 24 hrs of winterizing i noticed an aweful lot of fats-lipids floating around in the mixture. To me it was obvious it was od,and after explaining that to him,uh uh it might of been from blah blah blah backpedaling, well, there is some explaining to do,heh. You are totally right about the temps,i had a friend on the stove with a mercury thermometer in the water and either the therm was broke or this guy didn't read in right,he said it was 80 when i went to check it and it was at slow rolling boil...im like dude thats not 80, lol.So, i will buy a infrared therm, and measure the product at no more than 110,correct?I have been looking at the vac kits on ebay, there are a few that come with pumps for around 250,i believe they are 3 cfm vac pumps,do you think one of those will be sufficient? There are stainless chambers, and that company with the orange stickers with a clear chamber i think, any opinions on the model would be appreciated. Also, are you saying dont evaporate the product on a pot of warm water because the oil will retain the steam, correct ? Does that also mean dont blast tane into pyrex in a warm water bath? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again for the help.

I don't use a vac oven i consider them over kill in many factors 1 they pull too DEEP of a vaccume in micron levels your litteraly sucking away terpenes with those things... I don't have a link its just something ive read over the course of time.. Im pretty sure skunkpharm dove into that topic at one time..

Anyway just an opinion for now since i cant cite the excact source sorry im not saying DONT get one.. if thats yer thing go for i

LOL Yeah if yers was on a slow boil its well over 180 I think he somehow missed the 1 under the condinsation of the steam lol

The temps are really going to depend on indica dom... sativa dom... Im my experiece sativas will tollerate a much higher temps without discoloring and even alot of terps serviving at up to 115-120 But ideally i try and keep my NEAR 110... sometimes it goes to 112 ish.. but i would try and keep the actual temp of the OIL its self @ 110 the griddle / hot plate + whatever you sit ontop of that you will have to dick with till you can get an accurate reading of the OIL its self not the dish its in..

I'll give you a quick run down of how my setup works..

First i take a round pyrex and set that on my gridddle i put the temps around 120 ish when it gets down to just oil and a dash of butane i'll take it off the heat and into the vac for a quick and i mean QUICK vac to get an idea of what im working with.. a temp reading at that time should read something close to 30 degrees or so ( the oil will bubble up into a giant cloud be very careful when doing this STOP the vac if it reaches too high let the air out let it warm up repeat )

Once the oil's reached a point that it stops trying to overflow my dish and has pretty much settled on the bottom of the dish i'll heat it one more time inside the vac chamber ( stainless steal pot + acrylic id ) Hooked up to a 2.5 CFM Pump.. The temps on the griddle its self will read 150 + the temp off the pot will read closer to 130 and the oil in the bowl its self will have gotten to about 70..

At this point i take the dish out the vac ( it still has tane in it ) I scrape the bowl as fast as i can in as little strokes as possible the goal is NOT to mix the butane and oil anymore then it already is. Then i place all the scrapings ( usually very sticky ) On parchement thats been flattened out.. Line that into the bottom of the stainless steel chamber put the vac back on and repeat vac it till its done ;D

This is my pretty much final method after 2 years of switching things around changing things equipment ect...

Tools needed...

Griddle
Pyxrex around 6-7 inches around
Razors
Butane
Weed
2.5 CFM Pump
Vac Chamber hoses and lid ect...
And whatever you blow yer weed into ;)

Thats it :D

One last edit: CFM stands for Cubic Feet Per Min. Its the amount of air moved in 60 seconds.. a higher CFM just sucks faster then a lower one..:D
