Empty Homes Outnumber The Homeless 6 To 1, So Why Not Give Them Homes?

Empty Homes Outnumber The Homeless 6 To 1, So Why Not Give Them Homes?
www.mintpressnews.com

“Since 2007, banks have foreclosed around eight million homes. It is estimated that another eight to ten million homes will be foreclosed before the financial crisis is over. This approach to resolving one part of the financial crisis means many, many families are living without adequate and secure housing. In addition, approximately 3.5 million people in the U.S. are homeless, many of them veterans. It is worth noting that, at the same time, there are 18.5 million vacant homes in the country.”

Yeah, it's honestly just beaurocratic stubbornness and apathy that has let it continue this long.

I don't care how many homes are empty.
How the hell is that going to solve homelessness?

Thats not true here like 7 years ago. So many homes have been sold and occupied. It was 1 in 10 abandoned for quite a while.

And have you seen the condition of an evicted forclosed and abandoned home?

Over half of homeless can't keep up with a shopping cart. They're going to run a household?

I am planting 10 times the veggies and beans I normally would just in case it goes sideways and food is a problem.

We... put the homeless people in the empty homes. So then they have homes. Then they can get jobs and be productive members of society.

The banks that have screwed the people over repeatedly can pay for it. Profits aren't more important than people, the housing market is in a huge bubble, and their predatory lending put us in this mess.

Yeah, @MIMedGrower, I know foreclosures aren't usually in great condition, I lived in a bunch of rust belt cities. But even starting with the goal of putting homeless people in empty houses nationwide and then figuring out the logistics is better than leaving them in the streets or shelters to carry the virus and infect people.

Valid. Better yet, but them in all the vacant businesses and/or stadiums. Or a combo of all.

With the cancellation of events, you will c the homeless number rise. As a rather large portion of nascar track workers, my motorcycle races, circuses, ice shows, Disney shows..... list goes on. Well they live out of hotel rooms literally moving from town to town , now what my son was given less than 24 hrs notice! Here’s a plane ticket! He’s lucky he has a house and I put him to work some of the people he works with have no place to go ! Let alone any money to get there.

Not to mention how many college students were essentially just made homeless if they don't have a non-dorm place to stay. It's a huge failure.

The houses are full of black mold and even sewage. Plumbing and electrical stripped. Appliances long gone. And many are way out in the woods around here.

Yup, it's very similar in west Baltimore. Again, I'm not saying that it's a perfect solution, but it'd be a start.

Is there something that I'm missing where college students deserve to be homeless? Did they crash the economy twice in the last 15 years? Did they choose for the value of the US dollar to be 1/6 of what it was in 1970, when the median wage was $9870, or what is now 60k? Were they the ones that started hoarding housing and looking at it as an investment?

Kids got mommy and daddies. If they can do spring break on their own they'll be fine.

What if they don't? There are plenty of inner-city kids that don't have families to go home to, or students that have family that live abroad. The paradigm of the college student has changed a lot in the last couple decades.

Have you ever been homeless? Ever spent a day not knowing where you're going to sleep at night? There's a finite amount of things our brains can deal with and comprehend- Maslow's heirarchy of needs exists for a reason. Food, clothing, and shelter are the three things that most people need to realize their potential.

Honestly, spend a few days holding a sign someday after flu and give the money to charity. See how people look at you as an inhuman nuisance for existing where they don't want you. Bet you can't do three straight days of it.

Most homeless people are severely mentally ill and victims of incredible trauma. Most can't get a job because they don't have a mailing address. Most don't have access to medicine to treat the myriad effects of being homeless. Consider yourself lucky if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

If a 14 year old girl gets raped by her father and beaten by her mother for it and runs away from home, does she not deserve a safe place? If a 12-year old has to take their 8-year old brother out of their parents apartment because their mom is doing tricks for heroin, are they just supposed to die? These are not hypothetical situations, by the way.

@Kanzeon
I have contact with the homeless on a daily basis friend.
There is definatley work to be done.
These people are not your brother or sister for the most part, sure some a regular folks on hard times, maybe 8%.
The rest, no one wants to say it but we used to have places for them. It's not there fault, it's usually not intentional that they are in their situation.
Majority are nuts.
They need help, medication, and yeah a place to live. But all We've previously had were abusive psych wards and jails and neither worked.
We need better "Psych" wards, better meds better service but a empty house is no better than under a bridge to someone, who can't comprehend what they have.

As to the college kids, I still can't see it.
