I still dont expect anything near what I remember. I started smoking on 80’s outdoor skunk and in the 2000’s the skunk 6 which was grown in colorado mountains indoor.

I still have not had anything close to either and i dont believe more breeding can ever recreate it. Thats a pipe dream in my opinion.

Got you!

Yeah I guess I'm lucky in that I didn't start doing anything cannabis-related until a few years ago, so my nostalgia factor doesn't really exist. I essentially went from never smoking (needed my palate professionally) directly to concentrates.

I'm still building the mental palate of effects and their genetic origins, so every strain I grow is a new experience, good or bad. It's the learning that I'm addicted to.

I love trying new plants. I grow something new or different than the last and harvest one perpetually.

But it has been a long time since i could smell a bag clearly from outside a closed up car with the sealed baggie in the glove box or trunk.

And when 5 adult heavy smokers share one joint rolled in a regular ol job 1.25 paper all start goofing out and even losing balance in an almost immediate one hit fuzzy place for hours. Some cant even talk without stuttering.

I can get 5 people high on my best joints but not like that!

High thc short flower time chasing is a mistake we can never correct.

So true. I remember that old skunk reeking up an entire city Bus in surrey one time lol, I think I've told the story before. I do believe some of those strains are out there somewhere still. Hiding in an old hippies basement waiting to be reintroduced Into the culture. So many seeds and cuts went around there has to be some stragglers that havent been popped yet.

To tell you the truth my Violator Kush has that permeating type of stench that goes through walls. My kids actually brought home a note from the teacher saying their clothes smelled like marijuana it was that bad. Stunk up everything in the whole damn house when we trimmed it. Took over a week to get the smell out of our clothes and car. everything stank. I gave some to my buddy, he triple bagged it and put it in his trunk and his wife could still smell it immediately when she got in the car lol. It's a good and a bad thing. But mostly good now that it's legal.

In my experience dealing with those who had the best cuts like real old school diesel for example. The real one that would make you get lost on your own block. They would never have shared with anyone. But seemed to sell a lot of cuts. Hmmmmm...

I have smoked many supposedly elite clone flowers and since about 2006 i have not seen anything that even really reminds me of the old cuts.

I am guessing all these 30 something growers talking about their extensive cut collections dont have anything like what they think.

This has been told to me by a long in the business breeder who knows shanti and the other old guys. (They trade seeds by the way) and a pagan biker club captain I grew up with.

Its all hype in the modern market. Read bullshit!

Skunk #1 was a great breeding feat, but now it's just infected everything. There's a limit to how much genetic diversity can be pulled from different expressions of any strain, but using it as a central breeding tool seems to have done a number on the gene pool.

Tbh that's why I fuck with landraces and research genetics as hard as I do. Actual genetic diversity which will, down the road, be able to be worked and pheno hunted to create new strains. That Ketama plant has a high that feels so much more natural than, say, Purple Afghan Kush.

It's true. And around the same time frame for me. I think there was a massive crackdown in all the pot hotspots around then. I know from a very legit source that the disappearance of likely 90% of the breeding stock of stable varieties in British Columbia was directly related to a series of raids that took place in 2005. The main facility in Maple Ridge is where a lot of the original cuts were being bred and cloned. When it went down was exactly the same time all the kush varieties really took over to fill the vacuum. PK and BK was all you could get around the lower mainland from like 2005-2007.

Anytime since then that I've seen something called skunk or hashplant, blueberry, cheese, shishkaberry etc... Its been a phony, and usually not even close to the real thing.

I think amsterdam had their shut down around then too. All the old guys went underground and eventually surfaced in spain. Lots of plants confiscated. And i still think they had better structure, stability and highs.

Yup, a lot of breeders ended up in South America, Spain and the Congo. I know of a guy, dont know him just of him, in BC who is tightly holding onto a lot of strains from back in that time. Apparently hes got some original legendary shiskaberry seeds he got from Steve himself and a few others including hash plant.

Biggest downside to growing in cramped quarters in a shed..
I dont have anywhere to sit in here. I sit on the damn floor to smoke a joint. I should really get a little folding stool for in here.
Upside is, I get a pretty cool view under my vag plants from down here..

.. And yet when you tell the youngsters this they tune out they think they've got the "fire", it's sad really

I don't agree that it's still out there, seems it would have surfaced by now in my opinion but I hope I'm wrong. I also haven't found any real skunk#1 in any of the skunk and skunk crosses I've tried in the few years that I've been back growing, it was the first thing I looked for and after a half dozen different breeders disappointed me I quit looking for it

It used to be I couldn't even light a joint for a quick puff or two in the grow house, might as well put a loudspeaker out the window and announce your growing weed, it would have been more discreet

And not even the smell but the high isn't there anymore either in my opinion. And I don't even want to go down that road talking about the Columbian from the early and mid 70s which was even better than the real skunk#1 from the 80s, cuz unless somebody actually smoked it they wouldn't believe it anyway.

It's a fucking shame what's happened to cannabis in a relatively short period of time :/

Beach, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on Ace's and USC's landrace strains, especially to see how their bud compares with your memories of the older stuff. Have you grown or tried 'em?

I grew something from Ace, I just took a quick look at their website but I couldn't remember what?

Some say it's the way it was grown outdoors but I grew unbelievable skunk#1 and skunk crosses indoors to the point where I was accused of selling 'treated' pot more than once

This is the point where I drag out my tired old picture from the mid-70s of real Colombian gold and weep gently into my Geritol! Man I wish I had some of those big black seeds in that jar!! forget about it

That's a sweet pic Beachwalker. I'm too young to have had a chance to sample anything pre-95, but I will say the skunk we had in the 90's was in a different league than anything I've seen in the last 20 yrs. Pre-2000 I remember getting skunk #1, white widow, northern lights, NL5xHaze, blueberry, Flo, Hash plant, Double-O, The purps, So many fantastic strains that were so unique and distinctive.

But in the last 15 years... Anything I've tried bearing those names has been an imposter. And not even half as good.

I think a big reason for the weed getting me so much higher back then though was because of my fresh brain. It ain't so fresh anymore lol.

Violator kush on the right wins the smell and flavour contest by a mile, but platinum cookies on the left has a crazy high thc% and the returns on concentrates is unreal.
Pic is from last week, end of week 5 flower. Thought it was cool how much they contrast.

Bit of an update. Everything was a little overfed a couple weeks ago when I was having issues with my ppm pen, especially the cheese so forgive the bit of tip burn.. But the buds are piling up nice. Bubbas are looking chunky.

FZ4 smells like orange candies and is starting to take on a bit of purple. Very interesting plant.

Dragon cheese is super chunky and stinks. Like it just stinks of cheese. It's actually VERY close to how I remember the exodus cut smelling back in the late 90's. Nice cheesy plant.View attachment 927085

Couple more weeks to go... Cruusin right along. The yellow one in the front is the cheese, shes fading hard now. Creeping up on week 10 for that lady.

Thanks mang. Their buds are plumping up really nice, the leaves are a bit rough on some plants though. One of those things you deal with flowering multiple strains automated from a single res. Sometimes it's hard to keep everybody happy...lol. Makes it tough sometimes determining when you should take corrective action. Is it a garden wide problem? Problem with certain strains? Just weak roots on a plant or two? Wait, did I feed some of them too much ph up by accident? lol

And I've got to get this overfeeding trend put to bed on the next round. This is like the third cycle I've had burnt tips in a row. But I've discovered my ppm meter seems to scale over quick now and read low for some reason. Works fine if I clean it right before use, but after a week its reading low again. I think it will be getting replaced next round.
