First timer - concerned I'm putting too much hope in a dud?

Hey Everyone,

First time grower here. I'm concerned that my plant is stunted or otherwise not growing correctly and could use some advice and guidance.

Helpful info:

  • Strain: Feminized photoperiod Skywalker OG seed from ILGM
  • Grow tent: Vivosun Smart Growbox/kit
  • Medium: Cocoa Coir
  • Nutrients: Liquid nutrients that came with the Vivosun kit
  • Light: Vivosun growbox light. Currently at 60% for germ stage
  • Time: On day 18 today - in the past week the only slight visible change is that it's standing a bit stronger, but true leaves haven't changed/grown and the second set hasn't started to sprout. The water reservoir was replenished 5 days ago and the level has not gone down since.
  • Humidity is managed with a Vivosun in-tent small humidifier (it's extremely dry where I live in CO). I also currently have a humidity dome around the plant, which was removed for this picture.
As a first timer, I'm following the guide and using the provided materials in the Vivosun kit. This seed has consistently been far behind that guide, from taproot until now, but I have kept it going anyway. The cotyledon opened just over a week ago and these first two true leaves have not visibly changed in 5 days.

I have more seeds to try and also have some autoflower seeds of a different strain on their way. Should I let this one ride or based on what we know here, is it time to call it and try again? Any other info that'll help assess?

Appreciate you.

Welcome to the Farm! Thats not a bad looking seedling : )
Appreciate it! Does 18 days to get here seem reasonable? Tough to tell based on all the other stuff you can find online about grows.

What’s your temps in your grow space?
While the light is on and throughout the day it's typically around 77-80°F. At the moment, looks like it's at 74°F. At night while the light is off for 6 hours it can drop to low 60s. Only place I could really set this up was my unfinished basement.

I would remove the dome! It may be screwing your light up! Should be a hell of a lot bigger than that for 18 days! But hang in there!
Will do! I actually had the dome removed for a few days and the seedling was looking a little dry so I put it back on thinking it could help.

Good thing it’s a photo! And make sure you bone up on watering practices for Coco! It’s a lot different than soil! Both the watering and feeding! And hopefully you prepare the Coco properly! And just one more shot from the peanut gallery! I think it works better if you start in a smaller pot and up pot! Just two cents! If it was an auto, I would say dump it! But this might be a good practice for you! Hang in there! Maybe a coco Grower will come by! In the meantime, make sure you research growing in Coco!

Definitely decided to try the smaller pot first approach next time. For this, I currently have the auto watering strings up to the pot. But, I have a pump with drip irrigation to put into the coco that I am planning to introduce next time the water reservoir needs to be replenished.

Are you feeding just water, no nutrients?

Did you germinate the seed in a glass of water or paper towel until there was a tap root and then plant or did you plant the seed directly in the medium?

I would stop the automatic watering until you have a healthy root system, few nodes.
If it's wicking water through the bottom of the pot, the water may not even be reaching the seedling.

Im wondering if Oldchucky might be on to something. I was going to suggest maybe taking the dome off (same thought as chucky). Those lights on temps are spot on. My veg room right now is 83*

Don’t give up on her yet : ) what we cant see is what’s happening under the soil : )

Thanks for this! I germinated it in water and planted when the tap root was reasonably long (just water, not the paper towel method). I am feeding it water and nutrients per the VivoSun program. It's Base A (4-0-1) and Base B (1-4-2). 1mL per 1L of water for each. Soaked the coco at planting time and then replenished the water basin for the auto water when it ran dry. That was about 5 days ago and the water level has remained full.

You said it looked dry? if so maybe bumping up the RH between 70-80% should help.

My guess the water level isn't going down because the roots are not quite big enough to reach the water fully.

I use bottom watering system in 1 of my 3 tents.
Be careful with roots and bottom watering, pics below shows my roots grew through the pot and down into the water bases. Not good at all.
Hand watering from the top for awhile will help the pot fill out with roots properly instead of them heading straight for the bottom of the pot where the water is coming in.

Appreciate your advice! Makes all the sense. Watered from the top this morning and we'll see how she does.
