Ah i see, i just got this from a HVAC website, it's estimates on the cfm ducting can hold.

4" Duct 40 cfm
5" duct 60 cfm
6" duct 100 cfm
7" duct 150 cfm
8" duct 200 cfm
9" duct 300 cfm
10" duct 400 cfm
12" duct 600 cfm
14" duct 900 cfm
16" duct 1,400 cfm
18" duct 1,800 cfm
20" duct 2,300 cfm.

Currently i'm running some 1700cfm rated 12" fans into 12" ducting, yet it says it can only hold 600cfm? I guess this just leads to an increase in pressure and lower efficiency of the fan?

So what's the point in having a 20" max can fan thats rated at 4800cfm, would you just use an up-sizing reducer and use like 30" ducting on the 20" fan? In most cases that i've seen, all the fans are cfm rated much much higher than the amount of cfm the same size ducting can hold, what is the point of this :s?

I just replied to your other post. The 20" max fan is great, but it all depends on the application. If you're venting a room, you can simply make 2 20" intake holes to add up to the appropriate CFM. Or use a bunch of 12 inch holes, etc. They're great for venting heat from AC condensers.

But you can't really do that.

Did you come up with a solution yet?

sorry to bother you again John, but those mini splits came in above what Im able to pay atm.

Now i'm looking at central air systems to save quite a bit of money. Can you tell me whats the difference between central air, horizontal system and a two stage system. Which one should I be looking at to serve our needs. thanks again

You need a central ac system that is the residential split system design. Your air handler will be in the room and your condenser will be outside on the roof, connected with refrigerant lines. You need this type of system because it doesn't exchange the odorous air and keeps CO2 in. The largest they come in is 5 ton.

Hey yo. Got 24k btu Haier window banger. Has white styro liner inside. During day when my lights are out, a light is shining in from small slit opening on side of unit. Can I block or shade that opening? If I can't block, how close can I put a shade? Thanks/

I recommend 18k a/c unit if lights are vented properly. If lights are bare bulb or unvented use a 24k unit.

I am using two f6 stealths but the 1000w are still putting off some serious heat. I was told by my local shop that all I need was 8000 btu but I figure I need at least 16

my room is 9x12
4200 vertical 7x600
have a 22k btu mitsubishi
lights on i have to set the temp 60 to keep me at 75
then when lights go off i turn the temp up to 68 so that way my humidity doesn't spike lights off
is there a thermostat i can buy that will allow me to set different temps based on the time of day
i only have the remote control and it doesn't have that functionality

also i read in the thread i should clean the outside condensor every once in a while
is it good enough to spray down with a hose - u said opposite direction the fan goes

thanks

If you have one 1000 watt bulb than 8000 btu unit should work as long as it's not a portable. If you have 2 bulbs than get a 12-15,000 unit.

You are correct on the cleaning of the outside unit. The only stat you can use is from Mitsubishi. If you have the Mr Slim series from Mitsubishi then you need 2 components that cost me (wholesale) about $420. I haven't seen them for sale online.

What type? In mini splits I like Mitsubishi. Window units I like Friedrich but they are expensive.

Hi John

Can I get some clarifications on the 6k btu of cooling for every 1k watt of unvented lights recommendation? Does this include having the ballasts inside the room as well? What about the other equipment such as industrial dehuy and CO2 burners. How should we go about factoring it into our overall plan?

I don't include ballasts in the room because very few growers put them in their room. Other items that you mention are included. I have arrived at this number based upon experience also. This assumes your room is insulated and sealed well. I also what full cooling thru out all temps ranges. Last but not least is your location. Why do you ask?

I'm getting a 5 ton unit in the next week or so and I wanted to redesign my room based on the heat calcs you guys have done. I just hate to have everything set up in a certain way only to find out it won't work accordingly to plan. It's a good thing I ask because I currently have my ballasts hung up on the ceiling and have plans on keeping it there due to space limitations. Now I got to find a way to relocate them outside. For whatever reason, the people I know around here all have ballasts in their rooms and I thought that was the norm everywhere and I didnt know if you factored that into your 6k btu equation.

the quick details...I started a grow in a 20 foot shipping container.

Flower room is 9' x 7.5' x 8' = 540 cu.ft.
2 lights simultaneously - 2-600W MHs then 2-600w HPS will be running
Plenty of oscillating fans,etc.
Exhaust using 675cfm max fan w/75 filter (appropriate size for 8" Can-Max exhaust fan)
5 minute exhaust (w/closing damper) at a time / every 2 hours. (sound right?)
No flexible ducting w/turns - it's a straight line out the wall for the exhaust.
Intake is currently HEPA filtered & passive + 3 times the area size of the exhaust.

THE QUESTION --- With two - 3x3 ebb & flow tables full of flowering plants, will a 5000 btu Air-Conditioner be large enough to keep this in the right 75 degree temp "sweet-spot" (using 2 Adjust-A-Wing reflectors - not cooled separately) ?? (The veg. room is small w/it's own A/C)
If this is a problem - I have to fix it asap. The container is extremely well-insulated, but it was around 90 degrees today, and the A/C units - turned on for the 1st time - just don't seem that strong.
___SORRY for the length !! Just really need help from those who know...
Thank you !!!!

What are the highest lights on outside air temps you will encounter during your grow?

In a sealed room it may be enough a/c but in your case I think not. I would do minimum of 8000 btu unit
