Olyver seems only interested in helping, if you hire him to build you what you want. I need to find out what I am asking my electrician to build for me without raising suspicions

You're electrician isn't an idiot, he will know what you're doing, duh I need a box with breakers, contactors, and a timer to turn my hot tub off and on lol. You asked me what size of contactors you should tell your electrician to install, give me a break. How many ballasts are you using, heck just get a 60A 2pole contactor or bigger, or use several smaller contactors, 2 ballasts per contactor, doesn't matter, he will know what you are using the the unit for duh.

Your answer to my question should require at least 3 duhs I'm thinking. My question is....can a sub-panel be hooked up to a panel that has no main shut off? Thx for the help in advance :)

If you can handle wiring a timer, some contactors, receptacles, gang-boxes, etc, then tell sparky you need a sub panel installed and that you are going to run all the circuits yourself from the subpanel. He'll be happy to be paid to do the subpanel.

Yes I can do that no prob. I actually do remodeling for a living. I just want to make sure you understand what I'm asking. My main panel is so old it can only be shut off by Edison. It has breakers but no main shut off. So the sub panel would have to be wired HOT. Your saying that's not a problem?

Thx again and I'm in Los Angeles. I don't know where you are but if its near LA ill give you the job. Thx again for your time.

Gotta replace meter base and panel. Send Edison a pic and they will praise you for changing everything...lol. Just call a licensed sparky and have him change it out, Edison will come by and shut off fuse line to your house, then get work done and re-energize with a new 100A main panel with a main breaker....good luck :-)

well shit! thats what i was afraid you were gonna say:( Im a renter so im trying to keep this on the dl. Ive lived in this house for 10 years so im sure i could get the owner to replace the panel but i try and not ask for shit if you know what i mean. i heard i can call edison and tell them i want to change out the breakers and they will kill my power for that...then i could do my sub panel without no one knowing. i think ill try that and see what they say. i appreciate your help friend! i was in the IBEW but got kicked out my 2nd year of the apprenticeship for failing a surprise drug test...so basically i know just enough electrical to get myself in trouble:D

thx again

All the flip boxes that I've seen that you can buy, don't have a main breaker, or require anything other than a 240 plugin. I'm not comfortable "calling you on the phone" and discussing anything to do with growing MJ. Seems to me your only out to make a buck.

Aren't you out to make a buck, let me guess you need a 12 light controller to grow 12 lbs for your prescription...lol Go ask horticontrol about the relay he uses, there are several forums describing what you need for a flip, when you say light controller, just say flip. Contactor is basically an on off electrmechanical switch and relay relays power from a to b, normally opened or normally closed, good luck hope you can find an electrician to build whatever it is you want.....no more need to discuss.

Licensed people handling live 240v should be paid prevailing wages...and imvho if they are doing it on the sly for a growers peace of mind I think a hefty tip should apply. I know I would be grateful.

I have a simple question...
First off, I have a 30 amp (220v) circuit(dryer). Unfortunately it is wired 3-prong style..pre-'96..so my neutral and ground are both grounded @ the panel. I would love to upgrade it..but it is a rental spot.
So I utilize a CAP light controller (over-priced I know) as my timer for 2K. I just added a room and want to fire up 2 more lights. The problem is..I need to have an extra outlet that is a constant "on" so I can veg one room while the other flowers.
Which is the best most copacetic outlet to install in-line before the light controller? It needs to be universal for 120v cords and rated to carry the full 80% of the 30 Amp circuit.

Thanks in advance..

in my area..when the electric co kills your power at the pole they require an inspection before they will turn it back on. when you upgrade your panel they want to make sure the power supply lines are correct. It wouldn't be impossible to find an electrician to install a sub with live power. A new service panel is quite an upgrade..but still less than most people pay for a month's rent.

oops..what I meant to say was some electricians will upgrade your panel hot (didn't mean "sub" that shit should be upgraded lol)..probably not the most copacetic way to do things though. If I lived in a spot for ten years..i would just go ahead and upgrade without his knowledge and if he ever asks...you could say you have a licensed electrician friend that owed you a big favor...win win,

quick question -

I have a 20 amp breaker that i want to throw approx 16-18 amps in, but im afraid of overloading it. i know it may not be code or whatever, but could i throw a 30 amp breaker on there instead, just so it wouldnt trip if there was a bigger flux over 80% of 20?? i know 30 amps run bigger gauge wire, but im not trying to run 30 amps, just 18 safely...

thanks!

Classic,The breaker is one consideration but dont forget about the wire!A 20 amp circuit usually is 12 gauge.Anything you want to run safely should be at 80% max,I use 75% just to be extra safe, wire can heat up fast.Basically if you throw a 30 amp breaker on 12 gauge wire the wire could be the weak link so I wouldnt do it personally.
