Well if it actually is a conspiracy then whats wrong?

Future posters, please have something useful to contribute - thanks!!!

I remember reading DJ Shorts blueberry origins article, he said one cross he made was a female afghan, to a male sativa - and they tossed that entire line because it tended to produce leaves not buds.

however the same afghan but male, crossed with female sativa made buds
Some food for thought~!

Another deepchunk, puzzling that the trichs tend to form on the underside, when the plants reason for producing he trichs is protection from the sun

Lordy people have some odd theories and techniques. It shows how malleable the plant is. In my day you wanted a bag full of bud. I dont know anyone looking for a bag of shake. Dang if I could count leaves, my total harvest weights would increase dramatically. That being said I dont trim my buddage to closely. I dont want to trim off leaves covered in trichomes but those leaves are growing right out of the bud and frosty so I grind them up with the bud.

I hear people often say that trichomes are to protect the plant from UV but I question this theory. I understand that some plants do have protection using trichomes but cannabis pollen is wind propelled and requires some sticky fingers to catch it. The plant has one mission in life and that is to produce seed. She gets stickier in hopes of catching that wind not self preservation.

Bag appeal is the number #1 enemy to cannabis.

I highly doubt they make trichomes on the leaves so that they can "catch" pollen and then magically hand it from trichome to trichome and deliver it onto the pistil.

Even on a calyx this seems improbable, the pistils takes the pollen grain. when it gets mired in a sticky mess of trichomes can it really do anything?

not even sure why i'm here. why select for leaf trichomes when i should be simply focusing on high/effect, taste, aroma to create the most superior flower. People want perfect little nugs for their ziploc baggies its crazy but the future market unfortunately.

Do pistils not grow tricomes? Wont a plant continue to push out pistils over top of previously triched growth(which would likely transfer any pollen collected)? Would the plant be any better off statistically speaking of pollinating itself by having pollen on leaves surrounding pistils or three miles away on the surface of some pond?

Trich production is not solely for UV protection,it's a part and so it catching pollen,as well as maybe even for us to get high and give us medicinal benefits, more than one side or even 2 sides to everything in this world,we just have to change our point of view to see them.

Allow me to weigh in on a misconception vis a vis trichomes and their role in pollination.

There is none.

None.

Marijuana pollen is designed to travel by air until capture by a pistol.

It's a small, but usefull detail.

So would the pistils still capture the pollen without trichs, because they do have trichs on the pistils???

And I would the the surrounding leaves, stems and buds being covered in sticky trichomes would actually capture more of the pollen than the pistols,so it kinda seems counterproductive, not saying your wrong just still don't fully understand it all yet.

If you grow dank there's no difference between tight and loose buds. Tight buds grows trichs on the inside. Ive always wondered about the light never hitting them but its not like you can tell a difference in high between the inside and outside of a bud. Maybe you can, never really tried that experiment.

I've vaped a lot of trim, one of my goals is to get trim tasting as good as the calyx. Its possible, I've smoked a few growers bud whos trim was undistinguishable from the bud, except for hitting a bit harder due to being "drier" and more packable . Bowl for bowl modern leaf material does hit harder, but that's why; its got high levels of Cannabinoids in the frost but is missing the other oily components that do in fact contribute to the effect.

Which brings up another point. The best weed I ever smoked was sticky inside the plant material and not at all frosty. And the frostiest buds I've smoked were airy garbage. A lot of people are starting to hold the same sentiment I imagine. "Where is the sticky. Who cares about looks. "

I agree the pistils do grow out into trichomes on previous calyx, that could be a way trichs capture pollen for pistil. Doesn't explain leaf trichomes tho.

I wasn't aware that trichomes develop on the calyx as well as the leaves but if so they are there as a form of defence against small insects and lots of plants have and use this defense. Trichomes do not only appear on MJ.
My theory is that if a leaf is frosty than it's worth keeping. @lukem5 ... You are not kidding about bud appeal but seeing as I rarely sell anything I dont really care what "they" want. I have given people the option to have either Super Silver whose buds were just a bit feathery. Not real dense but pretty good. I also had some Blueberry with very tight nugs but this batch of blueberry was weak in comparison to the Silver. Of course they wanted the dense rock hard nuggets.
Dont trim those buds to closely. When the little leaves coming out of the wrap around the bud it provides a little protection after harvest.
What the hell. Grind up a bud whole and you wont notice a diff Unless of course you're the Sommelier of marijuana.
I'm all for as many trichs as possible on my plants whether they are on the leaves or not. Rock on guys and keep having fun.

This shit is ridiculous, but given that a gram of bud, a gram of trim, and $40 is all you need to actually run the tests, check the theory, and know for sure, why not just do that and present the findings, instead of asking for anecdotes from others who don't know either? Just saying...

You have all been breeding for large, tight dense nuggets. But trichomes don't form as well inside these dense nugs and give more plant matter than actual psychoactive material.

That's nonsense. Trichome stalk-length is dictated by flower-structure.... but trichome-gland density and psychoactive-effects aren't.

Anyone who knows what they are talking about - will tell you the most intense highs they have ever had were from loose buds not dense ones.
