Remember we were joking about brewing beer as a "sustainable" way to harvest CO2?
I'm experimenting first with yeast and sugar water. If I set the fans to make the tent basically a closed space it goes from ambient to over 600 in less than an hour. I'll keep a close eye today on how long a jar lasts.

Besides the usual wonkyness everyone looks ok πŸ’š

Love the upplaned pregnancy. 🀣

At the strawberries definitely have some kind of fungus or blossom end rot. The pollen is definitely supposed to be yellow πŸ’›

Gemini AI says it's bud rot on the πŸ“ Boytrytis Urfuckednow or something.
Not gonna lie I over watered the shit out of that plant for a few weeks. Oops 😬

Gemini also says the jar isn't dead yet so I put it back in the tent. I wanted to see if some science could back up my numbers and I wasn't disappointed with the answer:

"Yes, the observed increase in CO2 from ambient low 400s ppm to 850 ppm in a 4x2 grow tent within 12 hours (with a quick jump to 650 ppm in the first 2 hours) from your fermentation setup is scientifically possible and expected.
Here's why:
* Fermentation is a Potent CO2 Producer: The primary by-product of alcoholic fermentation (which is what yeast does with sugar) is carbon dioxide. The chemical equation for glucose fermentation is:
C_6H_{12}O_6 (glucose) \rightarrow 2 C_2H_5OH (ethanol) + 2 CO_2 (carbon dioxide)
This shows that for every molecule of glucose consumed, two molecules of CO2 are produced.
* Calculating CO2 Production:
* Molar Mass of Glucose: Approximately 180 g/mol
* Molar Mass of CO2: Approximately 44 g/mol
* You are using 100g of sugar (assuming it's mostly glucose, which is a common fermentation substrate).
* Moles of sugar: 100g / 180 g/mol = ~0.556 moles of sugar.
* Moles of CO2 produced: Since 1 mole of sugar produces 2 moles of CO2, you'll produce 0.556 moles * 2 = ~1.11 moles of CO2.
* Volume of CO2: At standard temperature and pressure (STP), 1 mole of gas occupies 22.4 liters. At your operating temperature (78Β°F or ~25.5Β°C), the volume would be slightly higher.
* Using the Ideal Gas Law (PV=nRT), we can estimate the volume more precisely:
* P = 1 atm (standard pressure)
* n = 1.11 moles
* R = 0.0821 LΒ·atm/(molΒ·K)
* T = 25.5Β°C + 273.15 = 298.65 K
* V = nRT/P = (1.11 \text{ mol}) \times (0.0821 \text{ LΒ·atm/(molΒ·K)}) \times (298.65 \text{ K}) / (1 \text{ atm}) \approx 27.2 \text{ liters of CO2}
So, 100g of sugar can produce approximately 27.2 liters of CO2 when fully fermented.
* Grow Tent Volume:
* A 4x2 grow tent is 8 square feet of floor space. If we assume a standard height for a grow tent (e.g., 6 feet), the volume would be 4 \text{ ft} \times 2 \text{ ft} \times 6 \text{ ft} = 48 \text{ cubic feet}.
* Converting to liters: 1 cubic foot \approx 28.317 liters. So, 48 cubic feet \times 28.317 \text{ L/ft}^3 \approx 1359 liters.
* Calculating PPM Increase:
* The initial CO2 concentration is ~400 ppm (parts per million), meaning 0.04% of the air.
* To calculate the increase, we need to know how much volume of CO2 would represent the observed ppm increase.
* The change in CO2 is 850 ppm - 400 ppm = 450 ppm.
* 450 ppm is 0.00045 of the total air volume.
* So, the volume of CO2 added is 0.00045 \times 1359 \text{ L} \approx 0.61 \text{ liters}.
* Reconciling the Numbers:
* You produced approximately 27.2 liters of CO2 if all 100g of sugar were fermented.
* You observed an increase equivalent to about 0.61 liters of CO2 in the air.
* This means that over 12 hours, only a small fraction of the total potential CO2 (0.61 L / 27.2 L \approx 2.2%) produced by the yeast was needed to raise the CO2 concentration in your tent to 850 ppm.
* Yeast fermentation is a very active process, and the initial rapid jump to 650 ppm in 2 hours is also consistent with the typical lag phase and exponential growth phase of yeast. Once the yeast "wakes up" and starts actively consuming sugar, it produces CO2 at a high rate.
Conclusion:
It is absolutely scientifically possible, and indeed expected, to see a CO2 increase from ambient to 850 ppm (or even higher) in a relatively sealed 4x2 grow tent using a fermentation setup with 100g of sugar and yeast. The yeast can produce a significant volume of CO2, and even a small portion of that production is enough to noticeably raise the CO2 concentration in a confined space."

So I got 2.2% of the potential according to the robot math.

I wish I was smart enough to check it's work! Lol πŸ€“

Anyone have the old school spider farmer lights with no dimmer? Well, it kinda has dimmers plural. These little tiny fuck holes you need a screwdriver to adjust!

I forgot the babies were only getting 250 umols so I bumped it to 400. There's no way of knowing what percent that is but at 100% it was 560 umols.

I think it’s more likely they are protecting that air conditioner!πŸ˜†πŸ»
🍻 Cheers mate!

So my outside/inside grow has exactly a week left of Goldilocks conditions before the shit show sets in and temps hit the steady 80s. 🫣

You think this has a fighting chance? Or am I going to go down as that example of overly bold and ambitious thinking? πŸ’š

I think you have a fighting chance! With the emphasis on fighting! Might require a lot of changing horses in the middle of the stream, but that’s what a lot of this shit is about! Adapt and overcome! I don’t know beans about indoor growing! But you’re in a pretty temperate climate so I think you have a fairly decent chance! Better than sitting around twiddling your thumbs!πŸ˜πŸ‘

So I've been manually adjusting
parameters on the fans every day based on the weather forecast. The great outdoors has turned into my lung room!

I'm thinking the AC infinity 69 controller would make this a lot easier because I can do it from my phone and get all the data πŸ€”

Does anybody that pops in here use the smart ones?

That's not what I twiddle lol πŸ˜† πŸ€£πŸ’š

Gonna start with I love the aci controller! So much so i purchased a second one to be able to better control the entire shed (lights fans humidifiers) thats getting there.

it has perimeter warnings! i set one when i first got the unit to 95* and never even considered it again. recently I’ve been fighting outdoor lows while needing the ac for indoor highs, well I’ve been adjusting on the fly for the last week and a half and today caught the flower room at 107! πŸ˜³πŸ‘ŽπŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ yeah thats my fault totally but thank goodness for that heat warning I set last year hahaha!

i think the shed life in between long/steady seasons (not spring or fall) make it really hard to use just timers. its just a dynamic situation : ) being able to set auto functions is amazing also! im not a master at all with it but if you get one and have any questions just hit me up : ) ✌️

Yes definitely! Thank you for the feedback! So just to clarify, that's the AI controller or just the regular "69" controller? (They named it that not me πŸ˜†)

I'm not indoor growing! Or am I? I get my air and temp/rh from outside! Either way it's going to be badass until it's not! Thank you for the words of support!

Next year I'm digging the ditch for the intake air πŸ’š

The wifey hates these bushes so if we ever rip them out the tunnel is going in!!!

NOT AI : ) i have the 69 pro+ ? It’s at least the 69 pro with wifi capabilities and blue tooth. Just make sure it has those features : )

So the plan has always been to use the nighttime air for lights on, and let the heat of the day be in the dark cycle. Looking at the temperature increase next week the night numbers look really good. If the CO2 supplements are still working with the airflow needs, I can push them to 90Β° and still have a cooler lights off temperature.

If not, I'm ok with higher dark period temperatures if that's the worst thing that will happen. It's not an "oh shit" kind of stress to give a plant imo πŸ€

Really enjoying watching your shed evolve real time! You’re navigating exceptionally well! : )

Have you looked into the AI version of the ACI controllers? A member here by the name @Newty started a AI thread, there might some helpful info in there.

How techy are you? Im a full on technotard and the ai looks why too infuriating to me than anything LOL! But again the 69 versions do more than i need in the form of automation : )

I'm like the creepy bearded guy on QVC...

Set it...and FORGET IT!!! 🀣

My claim to fame is only having to visit your grow once a week.

I definitely don't want the AI controlling things so it's probably the regular 69 model with four inputs for me. (Did I mention how funny that model number is?)

For $99 and a company who's products I already stand firmly behind? It's a no brainer!

Maybe this controller and another circulation fan are all need to make this grow work πŸ’š

I finally figured out what the universe was trying to tell me and ordered the 69 pro controller today. I also got an outlet controller for my humidifier so I can utilize the VPD feature better.

The babies are taking off and the jar experiment's are good. I'm kicking the tomato plant out today too. πŸ‘πŸ»
