A recently elected Henry County Democratic Party chairman was arrested Sunday for allegedly growing between 20 and 50 cannabis plants at his Geneseo home.
Kyle Allen Sproston, 33, 719 S. Spring St., was arrested at about 6 p.m. by Geneseo police. The Henry County State's Attorney's office has charged Mr. Sproston with unlawful production of cannabis, unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of endangering the life of a child, and unlawful possession of a firearm without a valid firearm identification card.
Unlawful production of cannabis plants is a class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in prison.
Mr. Sproston is on the Henry County Zoning Board of Appeals. On March 3, he was elected by the county's Democratic party as chairman. Mr. Sproston resigned as chairman after his arrest.
Bail was set at $50,000. Mr. Sproston posted 10 percent and is out of jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Monday.
The county Democratic party is scheduled to meet Saturday to elect a new party chairman.

CAMBRIDGE, Ill. (AP) — For the second time this month, leaders of the Henry County Democratic Party are meeting to elect a new county party chairman.

The meeting Saturday is to find a successor to 33-year-old Kyle Allen Sproston of Geneseo, who was elected to the post March 3.
Sproston resigned this week after he was arrested on marijuana charges.
Geneseo Police who raided Sproston's home on Sunday said he was growing between 20 and 50 cannabis plants.
Authorities have charged Sproston with unlawful production of cannabis, unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the life of a child, and unlawful possession of a firearm without a valid firearm identification card.
Sproston is free on $50,000 bond.
