That's why you should never put'em on the floor directly. Floor temp is not the same as ambient quality.
If they would've been up off the floor your experiment would've worked.
Run out to menards or somewhere and put down a floor heat kit and install tile over the whole thing.
Cheap to run and their feet stays warm and toastie, it will also transfer up to the rest of the plant adding extra heat to your root cellar.
