Shit. I didnt see that review. But I had seen the kit being sold at a lot of cannabis supply shops. So I assumed it was a reputable product.

I seen the Cannalytics kits, and was my first choice. But I couldnt find them in Canada. If I ordered it from the States, I would likely pay almost double with the duty and shit. So I went with the CB Scientific.

Ya, I just read a few reviews on Amazon and it is complete fucking garbage. Fuck, I got 2 kits coming.

Nothing like throwing the little money I have away.

Do u actually use it on your grows? Or just for your experiments? Like the thcv you were working on ? Just curious - as I really don’t pay much attention to thc content.

I am really disappointed to find the CB Scientific test kits are bunk. I was eagerly looking forward to getting the kit.

Over the past year, I have come across at least 3 different papers that suggest using Activated Charcoal will result in a loss of as much as 50% THC. When I had brought this up before in this forum, I was hoping somebody with the means to do so, could verify. As far as I know, nobody stepped up.

I started an experiment to see if I can determine that charcoal indeed pulls THC. And if so, quantify the loss if possible. I already have sample #1 extracted and winterizing. It will be in freezer for 48+/- hrs.
I also want to taste the difference between oil with chlorophyll and without. Just to see if it is worth it for myself to even worry about chlorophyll. I dont give a rats ass what colour it is. I just want a good clean extract with the least amount of undesirables in it.

- French Coffee Press
- Paper Coffee Filter
- Magnetic Stirrer

Sample #1:
- 10g bud dried at room temp
- 1300ml Solvent (92% Ethanol, 8% Isopropyl)

I broke the bud up into small pieces and put the bud in the Coffee Press. I measured 500ml solvent and poured that in with the bud. I let it soak for 24 hrs in dark and cool closet. Using the screen of the coffee press with a paper coffee filter in it, I pressed the biomass and squeezed out all the liquid I could into a Mason jar.

I measured 400ml more solvent and poured that into coffee press for second wash/soak. I left that on the magnetic stirrer for 2 hrs. Drained that into Mason jar.

I repeated this using 100ml each wash, and on magnetic stirrer for 30 minutes. For a total of 1300mls solvent.

Evaporation will be by rotovap in 500ml flask. 41C water bath and pressure at 40 TORR. Purge solvent in rotovap at same temp but vacuum pressure gradually lowered to 25 TORR. Never done a residual solvent test before, but it wouldnt surprise me if it passed.

Sample #2
- 10g bud dried at room temp
- 1300ml Solvent (92% Ethanol, 8% Isopropyl)

Procedure will be exactly the same as Sample #1. The only difference is I will add and mix 2 level tablespoons to the extract solution prior to winterization.

I should probably use more charcoal to ensure a sufficient amount of loss to register, if there is a loss. But I also want to keep the charcoal at a minimal at same time. I want to see if that amount will effectively remove the chlorophyll.

I havent started Sample #2 yet. I am not even remotely an expert. If anyone can see errors or suggest a much better experiment, please chime in. I am open to all suggestions. Or am I wasting my time? Either way I will have 2 extracts, so not all time will be wasted. Ha ha

I use it on my grow experiments?

An example would be using testing to determine profile and changes to detect peak harvest time. A bit more trustworthy than staring at trichomes.

Finding perfect decarb time
Finding a mom
Getting extract info for proper dosing
Seeing how variables effect outcome.

In fog 2 I will be testing things like O2 in the roots yes or no. Beneficial bacteria or sterile? I’ll be able to measure changes in cannabinoids.

It’s plenty useful to me to not fall into the bro science trap. Like all the uv stuff. Without testing it’s all conjecture.

Somewhere I got a thread on how to use this stuff. I have several videos but they have all been yanked along with the great video purge of 2022. I can do you direct links if I can still find them.

The short answer is no. You will have what you need to get started.

The long answer is that if you do this a lot you will want to pre-decarb samples and use aluminum plates to save a ton of money.

A rectangular vessel will give you better results than round but that’s a nice to have not need to.

Glass plates and a lighter come with the kit. You use the lighter under the plate to decarb otherwise you cannot detect cannabinoids separately they all show up together in “acids”. But if you pre decarb you can use aluminum plates at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Eventually you will run out of eluent and dye. I’ll show you what to reorder much cheaper than the kit.

I ended up buying a set of precision pipettes. Helps a lot with consistency.

I buy the little spray bottles in bulk and use them just once.

Get the kit, follow the directions on the first one, then all my advice will make better sense.

With that said, why cant the cannabis be soaked in water to extract the uglies. Then dry the flower and perform an ethanol extraction?

Is this a process being used? This is something I was going to try. Is it a waste of time and flower?

I do remember many people washing buds to ' increase strength'.
If you start out with 28 grams and then end up with 25 grams then you have increased the strength per gram left.
Not magic just math, many will argue you can' make pot stronger but concentrating happens in many forms.
If you reduce mass but not THC then you made your pot stronger.
The trick is to not shake it up much and loose the trichs from agitation.
I have let pot sit in water like making sun tea and then dried and smoked.
Might be a better application for extraction.
Many wash their outdoor buds.

So this last batch, I extracted with Everclear. After the extraction, I poured the solution into a 1L separatory funnel and placed it in the freezer for 72hrs at -18C.
After the fats and shit precipitated out, I sucked it off the bottom with a syringe and transferred to the smaller funnel. I will recover the bit of solution on top in the small separatory funnel.

My question is; is there any value in, or any reason to keep the fats and lipids?

FILTRATION

So I am still having issues with filtration. I am 99% certain (not 100%) that it is DE getting past my filters. I have been anal about filtering but shit is still getting past the filters.

Is it common practice for the evaporated concentrate to be filtered as well?

Is it possible cannabis compounds can precipitate out of solution during evaporation in a rotovap? I always have this white shit precipitate out near the end point when evaporating in the rotovap. Short of sending a sample to a lab, I have no way to identify what the substance is. Anyone recommend a decent affordable digital microscope?

I have been searching the web for a small scale (1L-2L volume) vacuum assisted filtering system. I would use pressurized, but would prefer vacuum. Or is pressurized better?

What I am looking for is something affordable (<$1000) that has a mechanical seal on the filter(s) that absolutely ensures nothing gets past filter. Something from the home wine or beer making industry?

I dont have access to many tools, materials, or equipment to build my own. So I would like to purchase something affordable to the home user.

What micron is considered acceptable to filter down to? I make the FSO for vaping. I have also read that THC can be filtered out in some instances. I DONT WANT THIS!

The batch I have on the go, I am quite excited about. I changed up my process somewhat. I am now certain that in the past, I still had fats and lipids present in solution after winterization and filtering. I was only passing the -18C solution thru a frozen -18C DE cake thinking it would trap the uglies. Not so.
This time, I winterized in a separatory funnel. I was able to physically remove the fats and lipids by drawing them off the bottom of the funnel with a syringe. I now know for fact they have been removed. But I still had the white shit precipitate out. It is presently purging so I havent had a chance to sample.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
