I think I am losing taste in my cures. Need Help!

I used to struggle with the cure as well. I really like the taste of fresh dried weed when it's really dank and always thought they got worse after curing. What I was doing wrong was drying too fast, too hot. Since I started wet trimming lightly and drying nugs in hanging herb drying net rack, keeping temps 68-72, RH 50-60ish, and fan blowing near buds, but not on, they dry nicely in 7-10 days. My cure is 10-15g in a quart jar, burping more frequently first week, then 1-10 min/day for several more weeks. I always put a 62% Boveda pack in the jar right away, and tumble the buds when I burp. After a couple weeks, just burp every couple days and check for weirdness.

Even after all this, I still think the flavor is better on some before it goes to curing jars, lol, but noticeably harsher. And a weird thing, my stash stays out in the shed all winter and freezes solid for several months (Boveda pack and all), in the spring when I go to get a new jar for smoking, I find the dankness and flavor all seem to be much, much better than after 3-4 weeks of curing, and I seem to get even more buzzed when smoking these long-stored buds. I'm smoking some now that was cured in Aug 2023, and it's supreme.

Exactly what moisture packs are you talking about??
Just desiccant packs
Or the 62% packs

Because people use those 62% packs thinking that they’re gonna magically balance their jar to 62%. That’s not what they’re for the 62% deals are for if you have stuff that is dried out too much you put them in the jar with the overdried herb in order to bring those numbers back up closer to 62% just in case you didn’t know.

A lot of people use those things wrong. I’m not saying it’s you. I’m just saying this stuff just in case.
That's good to know. I use to put the 62% packs in jars think it stablizes it. Just using grove bags now, after 10 to 14 day dry.

Fresh bud nearly always smells way better than cured bud but I find once you crack a bud open thats been nicely cured that dank stank comes back n tastes so much better and smoother I’ve got jars that are 6-12 months old when u open the jar it hardly smells but crack a bud open and phew👍

I am not familiar with those units. I usually use percent relative humidity. Do you know the RH?
Yes, the bags range from 54% to 58% rh. Of course they are not 100% accurate. I had 4 of them sitting side by side after pulling from empty jars.... each one had a different humidity reading. Not far off, about a 3% difference max. So I could be + or - the actual read.

We only vape now because it's so much better for the lungs. I'm not sure why yours tasted the same. It could've been the temperature. Maybe?
I have tried all 5 temps. No difference in taste, just amount of vape and harshness. I asked the person that sold it to me... they said they all do that and there is a flavor that the vape itself gives off. Maybe mine is too new and all I am getting is that vape taste and not the bud taste. But I tried 4 different strains and all tasted identical.

We usually use small pieces of carrots.
I use lettuce, a small piece goes a very long way. If I have a grow going I will snip a fan leaf and toss that in.

We use 1-ounce Grove bags, but we don't fill them full. We just use multiple bags. We usually fill about a quarter of the bag. For us, the bags are only used for a month or two before the buds go into Mason jars, so we reuse them.
I have the 1 oz. I have a good amount left in the bag even with a full 28 grams in it. I was wondering about re-using the bags. I have one plant left to trim.... this damn thing will not dry. On day 10 and still getting 12+ on the moisture meter. 🤔 We have been getting a lot of rain here and humidity and dew-points have been up.

It fully depends on what size you use they come in multiple sizes
The size I purchased were good for an oz. My jars hold about 1 oz depending. The fluffier buds take more room obviously. The 1snd t set I purchased worked well. The 2nd set I purchased seemed to have a lot of duds in them.

My last grow I wanted to smoke right away. So I just chopped them and put them in Trader Joe's brown paper bags and folded them with clips. in about 6 days they were snap bone dry, a little airy but they smoked fine, hardly any hay smell. I was mildly impressed. I will be trying grove bags though this time.
I just put a few in a ziplock baggie and let it sit a few days. They seem to dry fine in there most of the time. One thing I have noticed is that when I smoke the fresher buds, I get a film on my tongue. Almost a numbing feeling.

Wow..... that is some time. I go through my jars during a grow. I use to smoke about an oz a mo. Since I have a larger supply, and not spending money out of pocket for green.... my consumption has grown quite a bit. 😂🤣

Grove bags are reusable so long as you didn't heat seal it shut. Over time the plastic seal seam will fail just as any similar bag made of plastic does, but the way they're used you don't open and close them all the time, so you might not live long enough to see one fail, lol.

each one had a different humidity readin
If you're using those cheap thermometer and hygrometer devices sold on Amazon... Many reviewers question their accuracy and consistency. I figure we're lucky if they're even close to being accurate.

I can't comment about taste because I lost most of my sense of taste and smell from a head injury that happened many years ago. I have learned how to make the vape less harsh, though. That's by lowering the humidity. Drier bud vapes better, IMO.

We've been reusing our Grove bags for a long time. We don't use them for permanent storage, though. After drying, the buds are in the bags in a dark cabinet for weeks or months. Like you, our end storage is amber Mason jars.

Yep! Weather affects drying time, for sure. We've had a lot of rain here, too. We have two Zkittles clones that are a few weeks from harvest, so hopefully we'll have summer weather then.

I can't remember how you dry. Adding heat should help make drying faster.

The moisture meter is Vivosun. I paid around 50.00 USD. Had good reviews. The thermostats are cheap. LOL

I trim the major leaves and place them on a trim tray. I then chop the trunk and hang inside the tent until dry. Once dry I will chop the plant and place on trimming trays to be trimmed. I usually have 4 plants, 4 strains. Sometimes it's good to have different drying times.... gives you a break in-between plants. LOL.

We are going to be hot and humid this weekend. Perfect for starting seeds. I am going to try autos this time 😳 I need to find a general hydroponics feeding chart for autos. I have been having really good luck with their base nutrients using their aggressive grow feeding schedule. But the schedule is for photos, not autos. One is an F1 seed from Royal queen. Suppose to be done 60 days from sprout. How the hell do you time a proper feed?

Read the plant. Autos go through the same stages of growth as photos. So, I'd say time nutrients to the observable stage of growth. That's what I do. I don't use a schedule.

So, dry trim. We wet trim (as I understand the difference). So, IDK. I'm thinking they might dry slower while they're still on the stem. We hang a drying rack we bought from AC Infinity inside a tent and dry the buds in it. They're usually dry enough to move to Grove bags within a week. The temperature is usually in the low 60s and the humidity is in the mid to low 50s. Most folks recommend 60 & 60, but we've never been able to manage that.

I understand different drying times. We grow 4 or 5 plants at a time. A few days difference in harvesting, one way or the other, hopefully doesn't matter much.

That will be hard for me. LOL. I like a schedule. My plants like the schedule. I have not had any real problems once I started following the chart. The only thing I do manage on my own is if I want more growth I will leave in veg a week or two longer.... or if I am still showing clear and not milky (I usually let a little amber show in a few before I harvest) is when I harvest. Even that is tricky as it is hard for me to tell the difference. Even with a lupe.... it's hard to keep the shake down for me to get a good look without movement of me or the plant.

Me either. When the lights are on I am lucky to be under 80. I even reverse my days and night so light are on when it's dark outside and cooler. Adding humidly is not an issue but taking it out can be. This next grow will be a challenge as we are into summer and higher humidity. UG!

I got some free autos so I figured I would use them and build my reserves up so I can actually get a batch to cure and not go through it all before cured. LOL.

One of my autos is an F1 - done 60 days from sprout. Others will take longer so not sure how to do this. I have way too many seeds so I was planning 8-9 1 gal pots in my 3x3 to use up seeds and build reserves.

But do you do that while you still have a grow going? Or is that when you are totally done with your grow? I only have the one tent so it is where I grow and dry. Needing lights for grow and dark for dry I need things to finish together. Some go a little longer than they should but I try to get any that are under developed.

I have one plant chopped and on 2 trays waiting for trimming. On day 3 or 4 now in the tray after hanging a week. Our humidity is so high they seem to be getting more moist. 😳 My readings are not going down but seem to be getting higher. I may have to bite the bullet and just trim it wet. Jar and air them out till fully dry. I need to get the tent clean and the next grow started. I am 3 days behind where I wanted to be.

I do have good air circulation and hope that will keep them from molding. That and I have been turning them so that they are not in the same position too long and those against other items can get proper air.

Folks swear by those grove bags... My wife bought me some for Christmas so I tried them out on my winter harvest. I was very impressed with how it held proper moisture and kept a whole lot of the smell. But it didn't seem to dial in the taste as good as the old tried and true jar burping. And while jar burping lends a killer taste if you keep up with it a solid 3 months, it loses a lot of that dank smell. Everybody likes their pot their own way. While it would be awesome to have killer taste with dank smell, I'm okay with killer taste and pleasant mild aroma.

But I'm not ready to accept that this is the way things are. I pulled the grove cured stash out of the bags and put them in jars and started burping to see if I can improve taste with some burping, or I might find it's too far along in the cure to make a difference now. We play, we learn.
Some time you have to bring back moisture to the buds, this happened to me and a old school guy told me to put in the jar a whole lettuce leaves and put the bud on top of the lettuce and burp as usual for like 3 to 4 days and your weed will get the moist and aroma you looking for, just my opinion. Good luck 🤞

Lettuce is great. Lots of moisture and no extra flavor added to the buds like a lemon or orange peel will do.

What works best are fan leaves. Unfortunately I am just staring my next grow and have no leaves LOL.

I know what you mean, I just lollipop my plants I have bunch of plants growing, and I just put 6 in the tent to begin flowers stage, and I have a lot of fan leaves, if you live close to northern Virginia I can give you a bunch of them

The moisture is holding around 55% in each bag without any type of moisture pack in them. I notice that the buds dry out faster in the grinder vs my jar cures. I can load my grinder and that will last the day. I may let them go another week or two until I get some fan leaves and jar them the rest of the cure.

On the plus side.... they are tasting better after a week or so. 👍

I vac sealed some of mine after cure. ( Bread setting so they don't get smashed). I pulled some out the other day, smoke is smooth and flavorful. Buds holding proper amount of moisture, no hay taste.
