I'm thinking of trying regular seeds

I'm a fairly new grower and I've only grown feminized seeds but I'm thinking of trying regular seeds on my next run. I have some questions and need assistance.

1) Are regular seeds better than feminized seeds? If so, why?
2) How soon will the gender of the plant reveal itself and what do I look for to positively identify its gender?
3)Why did I ever learn to count to three?
4)Is all of the hassle with growing regular seeds worth it?
5)Do regular seeds produce better tasting weed?
I'm sure there are other questions that I missed and I'd appreciate any assistance. Also, which seed bank(s) carries the best regular seeds?
Thank you.

A lot of your questions are probably search able
  1. Only reason to buy regular seeds is if you would like to have a possibility of males. for breeding, not sure you would want them for any other reason.
  2. Usually there is a reveal at a week or 2 after the switch, you will know it when you see it. males are different.
  3. parental duty
  4. not a hassle just a waste of resources unless you are trying for males
  5. there is nothing I have ever heard of that indicates they are any different than their fem counterparts.
  6. Not sure this helps, but buy the best genetics. That may mean spending a little more, but good genetics is where you start for good cannabis. do your research on this, some companies have a rep for good genetics. Nirvana comes to mind, Sweet Seeds is another, everyone has a favorite and there are many, but these guys produce good seed stock and worth a few pennies more.

better if you want male to breed with or throw away. imo depending on the strain and the parents involved fems can be a bit hermie prone.
2) How soon will the gender of the plant reveal itself and what do I look for to positively identify its gender?
usualy by the 4th or 5th node you should able to tell. Females tend to show sooner.
3)Why did I ever learn to count to three?
sesame street would be my guess
4)Is all of the hassle with growing regular seeds worth it?
see answer to question 1.
5)Do regular seeds produce better tasting weed?
no, good genetics and good growers produce better tasting weed
I'm sure there are other questions that I missed and I'd appreciate any assistance. Also, which seed bank(s) carries the best regular seeds?
i'm very biased and like Cabinet of Curiosities Seeds :)

I've only grown a handful of Feminized plants, but 99% of what I've ever grown have been regular beans. I've always been under the impression that that's where the real keepers come from. Old school I guess. I recently went for an interview for a grow tech position at a commercial facility and ran it by them. They said that they use both reg and femmed beans to find keepers. I was very surprised to hear this. Upon reviewing my mental notes (kinda foggy,, I'm an old coyote) I have to admit that the few femmed beans I was given as freebies in the past had been pretty decent considering I only sampled a handful of plants. I am now now revising my original position. I can now browse the hundreds of strains that I had overlooked for years and it has opened up a whole new world to me.

The only difference between regular seeds and female seeds are that regular seeds will have both XX and XY genes in the package. So genetically they are the same other than the male or female chromosome. However, some female seeds are hermie prone. I believe that is more of a breeder issue though. Good breeders take the time to be sure the genetics are stable.

1)regular seeds are better because you have a greater gene pool, selfing limits this and with reg you have a greater chance of stability provided little/no intersex was used.
2) wait for alternate phylotaxy and the sex will most times be revealed shortly afterwards.
3) it's like learning to spell, you will need it to get a better jib
4)Yes if you have the room and are searching to improve your collection
5)no,taste is plant specific, every seedbank will tell you they have the best, like ford will tell you they make better vehicles than gm,try the boards for seeds, some people have already went through this and selected.

Me asking Dave Pope... "Why are fems usually worse? Even if you make them as careful and professional as you can and whatnot. Why are fems usually bound to be "just not quite the same"?"

DP :
Because they are missing a chromosome, very rarely are fems equal to the parent stock
D

Something about having the real correct chromosomes "tends to" make a tougher better plant.

most of the top top breeders use minimal fems. Mostly regs. So there's another reason. You'll find better stuff shopping for regs.
These are opinions. I would like to see the science behind this ... do you have a link? I realize that Dave Pope is the Pope of Pot, but I also think there's better sources for scientifically based studies.

Barney's Farm seems to have a pretty good selection of both regular seeds and feminized seeds. Regs will have more genetic diversity and is why people use these in pheno hunts. Fems done right go through a selective breeding process to produce a stable offspring. Having grown both, I have not seen any difference between plant hardiness. Regs have been around since the plant first grew many centuries ago. Feminized seeds are much more recent, and it's taken a while to get to where we are today. Modern feminized seeds should not pose any issue to the average grower as long as the seeds come from a reputable breeder.

Maybe this short read will help sort out the differences.

P.S. Regular seeds are not "bad" to use. There are many good reasons to use them. Feminized seeds seem to get a bad rep because earlier attempts had not bred out the undesirable traits. I've heard people say the same about "fast" seeds but my experience, though limited to a 1/2 dozen strains that I've completed grows with, have done very well for me.

Once my greenhouse grow is done, I'll have run 9 different strains of fast flower. I'll have more information on them too because this is the first time I've run them outside. As for yields? No noticeable differences yet as long as I've dialed in the grow properly.

Breeders self to establish traits and it saves a generation or 2 to become uniform or perhaps it's a standout or rare or they haven't had any as good through selection, selling them is so you can't just let the pack you bought screw and give you what it took them a long term investment to get too.

its still likely to herm out at least 5-20 seeds throughout a whole plant anyway. Ive rarely seen a whole plant not give out at least 1 or 2 seeds along the way.

I've not had herm issues unless I use bag seed. I stopped doing that a few years ago. Granted, I keep only the best of my buds. My son in law gets the bulk of the rest of it. He's said that he's found a seed here and there although we're still talking along the lines of a seed or 2 in a pound, not an 1/8 oz. I call that pretty good success.

So it's all about finding the right breeders in each realm.

For fems there's : In House, Barneys, Pheno Finders, Anesia, DNA, Sensi, Right Hemisphere. etc.
For autos its mephisto or sweet seeds? and a few others.
and then all that other stuff

y athats what I meant. throughout an entire plant there's usually at least 3-5

I guess thats a different matter than someone being able to just breed a whole batch.

I say humbug with that proprietary clandestine shiznit. Once again there's plenty of reg breeders bringing the fire.

And I say there's nothing wrong with growing regs. If you're on a pheno hunt, you'll have more success with regs. If you're like me and growing because it's legal and the dispensary weed isn't very tasty ... Fems and Fast Fems work nicely.

I've never grown any autos, but I'm sure someone on this board who's been successful with them would sing their praise and try to convince me to run them. To him/her their own. It's all good, and done right all can be outstanding.
