Yo!

I figured that it was just about time to start a new grow journal. That one serves its purpose of being a record of the progress of both my skills and equipment, but now that things are more generally set and my focus shifts more towards breeding than keeping plants alive, I feel like it's time for a new chapter.

In veg right now are:

USC Nepalma
Herijuana
Sannie's Jack Herer
DNA's Lemon OG Kush
DNA's Sour Sorbet
Reserva Privada Purple Wreck
Moonglow (ECSD x Moonshine Haze)
Moonshine Blackout (Moonshine Haze x Amnesia)
Barney's Farm G13 Haze
Hazeman '88 G13 Hashplant
ACE Orient Express
Kalashnikov Siberian Haze
Vision Supreme Lemon
HSO Lemon Citron
Real Seed Co Iranian
Mean Gene's Sky Cuddler Double Kush
Brothers Grimm Killer Queen (C99 x Killer Queen, two males)
Brothers Grimm C99 x Durban-Thai

In flower right now are:

Nepalma
Herijuana
Jack Herer
Lemon OGK
Moonglow
G13 Haze
Supreme Lemon
C99xDT
Lemon Citron
Baba Kuma (aka Real Seed Co's "Afghan Mix. They're seeds from Balkh, Badakhstan, Kunduz, and Mazar that got mixed up, but that's too vague of a name so I made a more specific acronym.
Kalashnikov Moscow Blueberry
Pane Killer Ooze (Uzbekistan x (Panama Red x Nepal)
USC Uzbekistan
USC Black Afghani
USC Col'Jam
Vision Seeds Lambsbreath x AK49
Emerald Triangle G13 x Blueberry Headband
Cannabeizein's Tree of Life

And just dropped:
Kwikseeds Pipatxu (Deep Chunk x Maizal Gord)
NAW Green Manalishi F2 (G13 Hashplant x Pacific's G13)

You'll see a general proclivity towards G13 and C99 crosses and obscure strains.

Something about G13 just hits right for me, and I'm trying to breed around the Chemdog/Blueberry/Skunk 1/OG Kush bottleneck. It's all good smoke, but most major breeders have been using those genetics for a long time and they've been interbred for decades. What could I possibly have to add?

The exception to this is the lemon stuff that I've got rolling now, but I wanted to have some breeding material for a Super Lemon Haze 2021 that I've been conceptualizing.

But I can find rare genetics that haven't been bred together and make new stuff based on theoretical hybrid vigor. There are plenty of landrace/IBL genetics to sort through, pheno hunt, and cross without bumping into something that's been done repeatedly before.

Like this Pane Killer Ooze that's showing promise. I'm excited to see how this smokes and to take the line to F2 as well as start outcrossing it. G13 Hashplant is definitely getting hit with some of that pollen to improve vigor (and likely yield) since it's such a slow grower.

Gonna see how the G13 Haze, Col'Jam, Orient Express, and C99DT play with Killer Queen. Silverfields is getting crossed with all kinds of stuff. As will Orient Express and Herijuana, including to each other.

And that's not even mentioning the stuff that I haven't popped. Those of y'all that follow along are in for a treat.

I thought this was really interesting re: small scale breeding and thought of you. https://iriegeneticscolorado.com/media/com_podcastmanager/573.mp3 Starts like 10 or 15 minutes in.

That's super cool, thanks for sharing it. I agree with what he says about focus, how a smaller plant cap makes a grower focus on the best phenos out of necessity. I kill a lot of plants I also really like the idea of breeding twin lines of a strain for potency and flavor for a few generations, then crossing them.

I like the idea of open pollenation like that, but the logistics of putting one male in a room with 3 females throws me off. There's just too much randomness in which branches get pollinated and when. I've gotten the best results when pollenating on the lower branches, just at the end of stretch. That seems to give the seeds enough time to develop while being able to cut the rest of the plant when it reaches maturity. I really like the idea of throwing a pollinated plant back into veg and revegging it while it finishes making seeds. That's brilliant stuff right there.

I also wonder if only keeping one male and using it for multiple lines is the best way to go in a low plant count grow. It works well initially (how many seed companies are based on one or two males?), but then theoretically decreases vigor in the offspring between those strains to an increasing degree with each generation.

A buddy of mine out here said he always breeds with multiple males of the strain if he can, just for the variance in genetics down the line. If the same male is used to male (Jack Herer x GDP), (Bubba Kush x GDP), and (Slurricane x GDP), then it makes the prospect of crossing, say, the first two of those significantly more complicated. If that pollen is collected separately and stored well, it could dust many other plants in a more precise way.

That was the thought process for the Pane Killer Ooze. I used the seeds from both (Uzbekistan x Nepalma) and (Nepalma x Uzbekistan) so that I'd have the widest variance in phenotypes and plant genetics to choose from, before culling hard. I've got another round of them going down soon and the first ones full of enough seeds for the start of Pane Killer Ooze beta 1.0

I think the general idea is to breed with hybrid vigor in mind for new crosses (like you're doing) and if you want to stabilize from there then you do it but I agree, you lose hybrid vigor if you try to "cross" between two plants with different moms and the same dad. But that's ambitious for a small scale project, right?

What you are doing with PKO is very interesting though.

Tree of Life is pretty cool so far. One of the many variations on the (trainwreck x purples) theme that is floating around. Running this alongside RP's Purple Wreck, which also has essentially the same genetics,

More Lemon Citron. Still at least a couple weeks out, but stacking and fattening up nicely.

G13 Haze, a towering, majestic beast.

I let some of these dry out too much overnight. Everything to the right of KQ is male.

Clones! In varying degrees of viability and rootedness.

Probably gonna put Cvibez out to pasture early next week, as well as defoliating and cloning the Orient Expresses, Moonglows, Nepalma, etc. No movement on the Cheeselicious or Three Blue Kings (bummer) seeds that were dropped, so now it's the Maui Waui, Green Manalishi, and Pipatxu that are germing.

In other news, does anyone know what Humboldt Seed Org/Dinafem/ Pot Sistemak investigation is about?

Just a discussion video but has all the info and posts and such.

no answers though.

I do know my old breeder had many problems with the spanish government to sell seeds. Got to pay to play it seems.

Makes sense. Where there's a government, there's corruption.

So far 3 out of 5 of the Pipatxu have already germed and are likely rising from the soil as I type. Genetically it's Maizal Gord, an African landrace sativa, combined with Deep Chunk. This is exactly the kind of stuff that I want to be working with since there's a high potential for hybrid vigor and unique terps/cannabinoids in both these seeds and outcrosses.

Screenshot from 2020 10 24 00 46 02

Saw enough ambering on the trichomes that I put the (WW x Heri) x Thai down for its last 48-72 hours of darkness and flipped the second Lemon OGK to take its place. Gave her a good shave and took a few clones, now she'll reach for the stars with those four colas.

Screenshot from 2020 10 24 00 49 31

And now for some PKO porn!

The last one is a more Nepalma-leaning pheno, having longer pistils and not fading nearly as quickly as the Uzi-oriented ones. I'd forgotten how hungry those could be in flower.

@dire wolf Remember that mutant Moonglow? She's taking over now.

A more zoomed out view of the room. As the shorter plants go into the midget closet and get chopped, I'll be replacing them with mulicola plants at a higher canopy level.

Check this out. A straight up landrace, RSC's Iranian, frosty before even differentiating. Looks like I might get to have some fun! 😈 😈

Hey K , hopefully she'll slow down on the stretch soon , I've found them to fill out nice and chunky once into flower .... Can't wait to see what she does , looking good !

Should be just about done stretching, which is perfect. Now there are like three more and a couple Moonshine Amnesia (New Moon?) that have vegged longer than that one that I'm gonna have to keep from turning into ents. Might even let them get another foot taller and lower the rack they sit on if I can.

Also threw some PKO pollen and Silverfields pollen on a Col'Jam. Seeing as how those plants likely still have two months in flower, I feel like the seeds should be done right around its natural harvest time. Going to pollenate Nepalma with the New Moon in the next week or so as well.

G13 Haze, 6 tops, killing it.

This is a Herijuana that had a rough time with the omnipresent thrip and fungus gnat invasion during veg. Got chucked into the reject closet after it didn't stretch.

But holy shit she's frosty.

Screenshot from 2020 10 27 23 40 30

So naturally I took some Triple Pakistan pollen and PKO pollen and hit the lower buds. Thanks to @Milson 's podcast link, I'm gonna try to let the seeds mature while the plant revegges to try and pull a better round 2 yield from her.

The plants in veg are... eager to be flipped. 😄

Screenshot from 2020 10 27 23 41 41

Also dropped the last fem seeds of LB x AK49 and Lemon Citron. The Pipatxu are 4/5 so far, they'll likely get their own pots next week. Probably gonna chop and rinse the Madscientist x Thai here in a bit, with 3-4 plants coming down in the next few weeks (Moscow Blueberry, Black Afghani, Uzi, and Sannie's Jack) with possibly double that in the weeks after that (UNP's, Lemon Citron, G13 Haze, LB x AK49's, Sannie's Jacks, Herijuanas, Moonglow, New Moon, Lemon OGK).

Of course that just means that I have to have 12-15 plants ready to flip when those ones get chopped. With the expanding jungle up there, I'm not concerned. 😄

That'll likely mean:

Moonglow x 3
Orient Express x 2
Nepalma x 2
New Moon x 2
Sky Cuddler x 2
Siberian Haze x 1
Purple Wreck x 1
Sour Sorbet x 1

will get flipped in November, with the rest of the Nepalmas, Sky Cuddlers, G13 Hashplants, and Iranians getting their places in veg. Then the circle continues.

Finally figured out a solution for the males that's away from the pipe leak spot. It's just an old cupboard, but it wasn't really being used before. Now I can go back to pollen chucking and collecting! The first ones back in are Moonglow, '88G13HP, Killer Queen, Orient Express, and Herijuana.
