I use both 3w and 5w chips
In the Big picture when looking at a room full - very similar results and eff.
The one thing I can say about 5w chips is stronger beam - less eff..maybe?
Idk yet at least :)

I agree 5 watt LED much more penetration just trying to help the guy out and keep him from cooking his tent LOL those damn tents!

Nope, we drive them at lower currents (1A-1.4A) with larger heat sinks for better efficiency. I do not like driving cobs at maximum current, if your fan fails - you are the one running the high risk to fry it ;)

I understand completely. All I know the cooler you can keep it the slower it will deteriorate. Don't get me wrong I love Cobs.

I disagree, It all depends on how hard you are driving the COBs. If you are driving the COBs near max current, you will be generating max heat. This will most likely shorten the life span of the part. I would agree that active cooling on a chip that is driven hard would probably add to the life span to the chip because the seat sink would be getting super hot.

I run my 36v COBs at 1.4A about 33% of max current which means less heat to deal with.

also, the right heat sink makes a huge difference, the more heat dissipation surface the better. My heat sinks are literally "warm" to the touch after running for hours.

so I read the article and they really didn't say anything different than what could have been said about any electronic component. These COBs are absolutely not different than a processor in your laptop or a processor in your favorite video console. The more crap the put on a silicon die, the hotter it will get. The silicon design of COBs are light years simpler than that of a processor yet we have processors running 24/7 in server rooms, in offices, in closets for years with no issues.

Don't jump all over something because of advertising. All that means is there was more profit in the product to be able to advertise it. All those crazy $500-$1000 led set ups are a name you're paying for. Not the actual output. Look at the specs of the products. Screenshot them on phone then line them up against specs on many units on eBay or amazon. You'll notice little if any difference at all. Then look at reviews. Weed out the fake reviews. There is so much info available nowadays. Just have to spend the time to read. Don't waste $1000s of dollars on a setup you can have for maybe $300. Research.

Check out the specs on those cheap panels from eBay. They are the two best and most efficient nanometers possible 450 + 660. They use about 20 watts at the wall and produce no heat. Placing those just below the canopy pointing at those small buds with thin stems we'll beef them up big time. There will be nothing more efficient or least expensive you could do. I would go with two galaxyhydro 300 on top and four panels on sides. For a three-by-three that would be sufficient.

sorry for the delay in answering - yes - 3by3 or at best 3.5by3.5 - think the 600's footprint is 3ft flower to 3.5 ft veg

Mars hydro 192 reflector kicks ass
Had several of them no issues yet,
Got them on special for about $280 each
Puts out 380 watts - I got #1 from 1 light- with a high yield strain

cheap led panels use cheap components.mars/vipar are like disposable grow lights.if you just need to get a few harvests fine grab whatever.but if fancy purple colors is what your after grab a quality panel like amare. kind,or fluence imo.
grown with a mars light, panel only lasted just shy of 14 months 12/12.not acceptable imo

Yeah thats what we've been discussing here - cheap panels for under $300 that rock
And they do - your mars life expectancy may be different than others fyi

Why buy anything more if you dont know if growing even suits you?

Maybe you do know your grow future, for most it is a short lived hobby.
Go cheap, and if your a natural then go buy something with the LB you just grew with Mars Hydro lmao

Just alittle "Fancy purple" too

My new run will trump that - no doubt about it

Cheap leds may not last as long but even the expensive ones will burn out eventually. I haven't been at it long enough to say whether or not a $600 led lasts more than 3x the life of a $200. But in reality you can replace that $200 every grow and still be cost effective. I was iffy about my cheap led because I tried to start plants from seed. N had lots of weird issues. But now that I'm in flower n plants aren't so fragile they seem to love the cheap setup I have. I put my 600 led centered between 2 t5 setups n staggered veg n bloom bulbs in the t5s and got to say it's working real well for an under $300 light system. And literally almost covers my 4x4 wall to wall so I know the light output has to cover it. I see the led purplish glow on the lower branches of my dense bush
