My Already Flowering Plant Is Growing Balls?

You guys have got me scared. this year I pulled 8-10 5 foot males. I checked every day so I was able to pull them as soon as they started shooting balls. I tossed them in a pile about 25 feet from the girls. Now they are dry and brittle and the girls are budding. I guess I will carefully toss a tarp over the boys. .

Hose them down well, if the rain hasn't done so already. The water will make the pollen useless.
