The holes in bucket and meter are brilliant and cheap .
No guess work . It works . Love it .
The blumat seems to take it up a simple non complex notch .
Saw this in their info ;

Location ,location ,location ..
This install or multiple heads would make the longer spikes unnecessary and assure an accurate assessment of the whole pot ..
What's up all ! First post , good info to be found around here ..
I’ve been thinking of the placement too, this is for Rockwool (all I work in)
I have different meters but copied this strategy, anyone know of any similar guidelines?
(Especially for soil, I think that will help the vast majority here the most)

Thnx That’s a great idea man…I’m using it now since I have cloth pots, but I usually only check one or two…with the meter.
I use it along with my around the clock H2O method,,Water one pot 20% & onto the next one & the next one etc. etc., then come back to the first one 20% & then next one etc etc.
I usually have to go around 4-5 times giving the meter a chance to accurately read the absorption saturation rate.
(I used to just wait for it to trickle out of the bottom a little bit & it still does)
I water basically every three days, so I water heavy.

((I used to use a 8’ foot hose with a simple hand starter siphon pump bulb out of a 5 gallon bucket, very quick, but I wanted 100% saturation, don’t want any roots feeling left out :(
So On goes the music and I just take longer to water))!

Interested in the progress of the on demand feeders. Curious how you would be able to eliminate wet/dry spot false readings?

The other day I had an idea and after testing, it works great.

To know if you need to water, get yourself a soil meter.
Poke or drill 4 holes in your pot 1/4 way up from the bottom spaced around the pot.
Insert the meter probe into the hole and test for moisture. If its dry, then water SLOWLY until it reads on the meter.
Stop when the meter reads the water. It's full.
About how much water should I be giving my white widow, week 3 of veg in 5 gallon fabric pots

We'd need pictures and a lot more details to full answer your question. But for reference, I was using about 1.25-1.5 gallons of water in a fabric pot that size about every 3-4 days. Using the probe like outlined in this thread is an ideal way to water your plants. The meters are cheap at about $10 most places and it should be part of every soil grower's tool kit imo.

Sigh….. another thing to do tomorrow, cut slits in my fabric posts to check multiple levels of soil moisture. I have one of those meters in my tent, never use it lol, guess it’s time to start haha

Small holes, not slits. Put a piece of duct tape on the spot you're going to poke so its easier to find and poke a hole through the fabric using a nail or screwdriver. You can put more than one if you want to.

Yeah I’d probably go every 3-4” I’ll give it a test with one of my plants, I don’t water to runoff and know a gallon per pot will start runoff (used to do an extra 1/4 gallon) now I don’t want to water to runoff so harder to judge when fully saturated besides the ol pick up test so knowing moisture levels all the way down would be awesome

If you're growing organically, a little bit is ok because its hard not to do it a time or two. But you are right, especially with living soil. You really don't want run-off.
