Norcal Tomatoes

Being originally from the south, the thing I miss the most are great tasting garden fresh tomatoes. I am told that it is nearly impossible to get tomatoes to ripen in our climate. Has anyone north of Fortuna had success growing outdoor tomatoes here? If so, what varieties do well? Northern California/Southern Oregon area
