ATLANTA —
Republican state representative Allen Peake says he’s hopeful his bill to allow for the limited use of medical cannabis will make it through the legislature.

A study committee that traveled the state this summer holding hearings on the issue wrapped up its work on Wednesday at the state Capitol in Atlanta.

Peake is advocating the growing, processing and distribution of cannabis oil with a chemical composition so low it would not cause the sensation of feeling high.

The Macon Republican says medical cannibus could help patients suffering from conditions, like cancer, epilepsy, autism, multiple sclerosis, ALS and chronic pain.

He says the state should decide whether to adopt the use of it.

"At the end of the day, this is a state's rights issue,” Peake said onGPB’s On Second Thought Wednesday. “We ought to be controlling our own destiny as a state to be able to provide access to cannabis oil for our citizens and not waiting on another state nearest or farthest from us to come up with a solution or the federal government, which clearly has not been able to come up with a solution. We ought to do it ourselves."

Meanwhile, a Democratic state lawmaker from Gwinnett County has filed a constitutional amendment to legalize recreational marijuana use in Georgia.
