Some of the fabric they use is designed to work like those air pots, the roots hit the edge and then shy back away and I use those but I'm betting there's bags the roots will just grow into the side of the fabric and if you need a good visual, imagine trying to flush a live octopus down a toilet.

My plants first pot is always a 1 gallon plastic thermoformed planter. They make transplanting a very easy process. (I think I picked them up at Menards for roughly $1.00 each.) I pop them out of the plastic and right into the final home ... a 5 gallon fabric pot usually.
