COLONIE >> Police arrested a 28-year-old Colorado man at the Desmond Hotel on Monday after finding a package delivered to the defendant contained boxes of marijuana decorated as Christmas presents.
David B. Malchow of Breckenridge, Colorado, was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana.
U.S. Postal Inspectors notified the Colonie Police Department that a strong odor of marijuana emanated from the package, which was to be delivered to Malchow at the hotel.
A Colonie police K-9 trained in drug detection was alerted to the presence of drugs in the package and a search warrant was obtained to open the package.
A total of 16 pounds and 11.55 ounces of marijuana were found inside, divided into several smaller packages wrapped as Christmas presents.
The package originated in Colorado.
Malchow had a reservation at the hotel and when he arrived at 9:26 p.m. and was given the package, inspectors from the Colonie Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspection Service arrested him without incident.
Malchow has been in the area since at least Dec. 12, police say and was also registered at the Best Western Hotel on Wolf Road.
A search warrant executed at that room recovered no additional marijuana. The defendant did have $4,200 in cash and financial records indicating deposits or money orders for an additional $5,500.
The value of the marijuana is estimated at $4,000 per pound, police said.
Malchow was arraigned in Colonie Justice Court on Monday and remanded to Albany County Correctional Facility without bail until his next scheduled court appearance on Wednesday.
